For routine Windows 11 storage maintenance, start with Storage settings, Cleanup recommendations, and Storage Sense. They are built into Windows, cost nothing extra, show what is consuming space, and let you approve deletions or automate selected cleanup. A third-party cleaner is optional: it can add app-specific browser cleanup, startup controls, update utilities, scheduling, or analysis tools, but the sources available for this comparison do not independently prove that a general-purpose cleaner makes Windows broadly faster.
The practical choice depends on the job. If you need to remove temporary files, understand why your system drive is full, or keep enough room for updates, Windows’ own tools are the safer first step. Consider another utility only when you have a specific feature that Windows does not provide and you are prepared to review its scan results, permissions, price, and renewal terms.
Storage Sense and a PC cleaner solve different problems
Windows 11 includes several related storage tools rather than one single “cleaner.” Settings > System > Storage gives you a category-level view of disk use. Cleanup recommendations presents removable categories for review. Storage Sense can apply selected rules automatically, primarily to the system drive (usually C:).

“Storage Sense can automatically free up drive space for you by getting rid of items that you don’t need, like temporary files and items in your Recycle Bin.”
Microsoft also says that freeing space can help a device run better and stay secure. That is a reason to address critically low storage; it is not evidence that an additional cleaner is required or that a particular cleaner will increase speed.
What Windows 11 Storage Sense actually does
It targets selected, removable categories
Storage Sense is designed to remove items Windows considers unnecessary, such as temporary files and content in the Recycle Bin. You choose how often it runs and how long items remain in locations such as the Recycle Bin or Downloads before Windows removes them. With default behavior, it runs when the device is low on disk space.
The important qualification is scope: Storage Sense operates on the Windows system drive. It is not a universal cleaner for every internal or external volume. To inspect another drive, use Windows’ separate storage-used-on-other-drives view and manage that drive directly.

Downloads are not deleted by default
Many people worry that enabling Storage Sense will erase files they downloaded. Microsoft’s guidance says Downloads are not touched unless you configure a rule for them. If you do enable that option, set the retention period deliberately and keep irreplaceable files somewhere else. A short retention period can remove an installer, project archive, or offline document that you still intended to use.
Recycle Bin cleanup is configurable
Storage Sense can remove Recycle Bin items after the period you select. Treat that as an automatic expiration policy, not a second backup. Once the items are removed from the Recycle Bin, ordinary recovery becomes more difficult.
Cloud files may become online-only
Storage Sense can manage cloud-synced files by making older items online-only according to an inactivity interval. Windows 11 version 22H2 documentation described a 30-day default for OneDrive files that had not been opened for more than 30 days. An online-only file is not permanently deleted: with an internet connection and enough local space, it can be downloaded again. Files marked Always keep on this device are exempt. Check the Storage Sense and sync settings shown on your particular Windows version before relying on the interval.

- Check available capacity. Open File Explorer, select This PC, and look at the system drive bar. You can also open Settings > System > Storage for a categorized estimate.
- Let the categories finish calculating. Windows may take a moment to account for installed apps, temporary files, documents, pictures, and system data. The category totals help you decide where to investigate instead of deleting blindly.
- Open Cleanup recommendations. In Settings > System > Storage, select Cleanup recommendations. Windows can list temporary files, large or unused files, cloud-synced files, and unused apps, along with an estimated amount of space each category could save.
- Expand every category before selecting it. Review file names, sizes, dates, and the explanation Windows provides. Keep anything you still need, and remove only the categories you understand.
- Handle previous Windows installations cautiously. A previous installation can occupy substantial space after an upgrade. Deleting it also removes the ability to return to the previous Windows version. Do not select this category until you are certain the current installation is stable and you no longer need rollback.
- Apply the selected cleanup. Confirm the removal and wait for Windows to finish. Large system categories may take several minutes, and the displayed free-space total may update after the operation completes.
- Recheck the drive. Return to Settings > System > Storage or This PC. If the space did not return, investigate another category rather than repeatedly running the same cleanup.
Cleanup recommendations is a review-first workflow. That makes it useful when you want to see the consequences before anything is deleted.

How to configure Storage Sense without surprises
- Open Settings > System > Storage.
- Select Storage Sense.
- Turn on automatic user-content cleanup only after reading each setting.
- Choose how frequently Storage Sense should run. The available choices and wording can vary by Windows 11 release.
- Set the Recycle Bin retention period to match how long you normally keep deleted files available.
- Leave Downloads disabled unless you intentionally want Windows to remove files after a defined period.
- Review cloud-content behavior and inactivity thresholds. Keep important offline files marked Always keep on this device.
- Run the cleanup manually when you want immediate results, or leave the schedule enabled for low-space maintenance.
The safest automation is narrow automation: enable only the categories and retention rules that fit your working habits. If several people use the PC, explain the Downloads and Recycle Bin policies before enabling them.
What Storage Sense does not do
- It does not clean every drive automatically; its normal scope is the Windows system drive.
- It does not delete Downloads by default.
- It is not a malware scanner, a backup system, or a substitute for uninstalling software you no longer need.
- It does not guarantee that an application’s private cache or log directory will be removed.
- It does not prove that Windows will run faster after every cleanup. Removing critically low storage can help system reliability, but the result depends on what was consuming the space.
For a second internal drive, an external disk, or a removable card, open the storage-used-on-other-drives settings and inspect that volume separately. Moving personal files or changing where new content is saved can be more effective than repeatedly deleting small temporary files.
What a third-party cleaner may add

The value is granular selection: a user may want to clear data from one browser or application while preserving another program’s information. Cookies can also contain active sign-ins and site preferences, so clearing them may require you to log in again.

Health Check
Health Check combines cleaning with additional checks, including third-party application updates and startup-item controls, according to the vendor’s description. Startup management can help you identify programs that launch with Windows, but disabling an entry without understanding it can affect hardware utilities, security software, or synchronization.
Other advertised Windows functions
The vendor’s product policy lists scheduled cleaning, Smart Clean, Drive Wiper, Registry Cleaner, and Disk Analyzer among Windows product functions. These are documented features, not independent findings that each function is necessary. In particular, the official sources used here do not establish that registry cleaning is required for normal Windows maintenance.
Before installing any cleaner, verify which browsers and applications its current version supports, whether each category is opt-in or preselected, and whether a deleted item can be restored. A broad scan can find more locations than Storage Sense, but broader coverage also means more opportunities to remove data you meant to keep.

This table separates capability from benefit. A utility can include a startup manager without proving that disabling startup entries will improve every PC, and it can scan more locations without proving that the additional deletions are worthwhile.

Will a PC cleaner make your computer faster?
There is no established numerical comparison in the available official material showing that a general-purpose third-party cleaner makes Windows 11 broadly faster than Storage Sense. The defensible claim is narrower: freeing space when a drive is nearly full can help a device operate more reliably and remain able to install updates. The improvement comes from resolving a storage constraint, not from the brand name of the tool used.
If the computer is slow while it still has ample free space, a cleaner may not address the cause. Check startup programs, pending updates, thermal problems, failing storage, memory pressure, malware warnings, or an application that is consuming excessive resources. Avoid running a registry cleanup simply because a marketing screen promises a speed increase; the sources here do not establish that registry cleaning is necessary.
Current US price example: what to check before paying
CCleaner’s US plans page, checked on October 13, 2026, listed these vendor-published options:

The page also advertised a 30-day money-back guarantee. These figures are a dated US pricing capture and may change. Confirm the live price, billing interval, renewal amount, device count, included modules, tax, and refund terms before purchase. A discounted displayed price should not be assumed to be the renewal price.
Do not pay for a driver module, multi-device license, or bundle merely to remove temporary files that Windows already handles. Pay only when a specific extra capability saves enough time or solves a requirement you actually have.
Which option fits your situation?
Choose Windows tools first when
- Your immediate goal is to free space for a Windows update.
- You want to see estimated savings before deleting anything.
- You mainly need temporary-file and Recycle Bin cleanup.
- You prefer settings maintained and documented by Windows itself.
- You do not want another application, background process, or renewal to manage.
Consider a third-party utility when
- You need a specific supported-app cleanup that Windows does not expose.
- You want a startup-item manager, scheduled scans, disk analysis, or a bundled update feature.
- You have reviewed the product’s categories and can identify what each selection removes.
- The current price and renewal terms are acceptable for the devices you intend to cover.
Do not install one merely because
- A warning says your PC is “full of junk” without showing which files would be deleted.
- A marketing claim promises a universal speed boost without controlled evidence.
- You have not made a backup of important files.
- You are hoping it will fix a symptom that points to hardware, malware, memory, or an application problem.
What to do when cleanup is not enough
- Identify the growing category. Compare the Storage page before and after cleanup. A rapidly expanding category is more useful evidence than a generic cleaner score.
- Move personal data. Transfer large videos, photo libraries, archives, or project folders to external storage when appropriate. Confirm the copy opens before deleting the original.
- Change save locations. Windows lets you choose where new documents, music, pictures, videos, apps, and maps are saved. Set a suitable drive before the system drive becomes critically full.
- Uninstall unused applications. Use Settings > Apps > Installed apps, sort by size where available, and remove software you recognize and no longer need.
- Investigate a refilling Temp folder. Microsoft documents a specific troubleshooting case involving a rapidly refilling Temp folder and Microsoft Store app-package files. Follow the Microsoft steps for that symptom rather than repeatedly running a generic cleaner.
- Use external storage for update-space problems. Microsoft’s low-space guidance points to external storage in some update situations.
- Escalate only after preserving data. If cleanup and file moves still do not allow an update, Microsoft notes that resetting or reinstalling Windows may help. Back up personal files and confirm application-licensing details before choosing that route.
A safe maintenance routine
- Check free space before a major Windows upgrade or large application installation.
- Use Cleanup recommendations as a review step rather than selecting every category automatically.
- Keep Downloads out of automatic cleanup unless you have a deliberate retention policy.
- Set a Recycle Bin period long enough for your normal recovery needs.
- Protect important cloud files with an explicit offline setting when you need local access without connectivity.
- Do not delete a previous Windows installation until the rollback decision is final.
- Review startup entries and browser cookies individually; convenience features can have sign-in or boot-time consequences.
- Keep a current backup. Neither Storage Sense nor a cleaner is a backup system.
- Review paid-software renewal dates and device limits before accepting a trial or subscription.
For most Windows 11 users, this routine makes Storage Sense the default and a third-party cleaner an optional specialist tool. The built-in path gives you the essential controls without adding cost or software. Add another utility only when its clearly identified extra function is worth the additional review and maintenance.
