To control which programs open automatically when you sign in to Windows 11, open Start > Settings > Apps > Startup. Find the app and switch it On to launch it at sign-in or Off to stop that automatic launch. This changes startup behavior; it does not uninstall the app or prevent you from opening it yourself later.

The Settings list covers applications registered in Windows with a startup task. It is not a universal inventory of every mechanism that can launch software, so an app missing from the list may need to be configured through a File Explorer Startup folder. The choice applies to the Windows account whose startup settings you are viewing unless you deliberately place a shortcut in the common Startup folder.

What the Windows 11 Startup setting actually controls

A startup application is a program configured to launch automatically after your Windows account signs in. The control at Settings > Apps > Startup changes whether a registered startup task is enabled. Turning an entry off prevents that automatic launch at sign-in; the program remains installed and can still be opened from Start, Search, a shortcut, or its own file.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

The setting is narrower than “all activity an app performs.” An application might continue to provide background services, scheduled tasks, notifications, or other activity governed by separate Windows or in-app controls. Conversely, turning a startup entry on does not guarantee that every component of the app will run in the background indefinitely. Treat the toggle as a sign-in launch control, not as a complete privacy, battery, or background-permission switch.

Startup settings are also account-sensitive. If several people use the PC, changing an entry while signed in to one account does not automatically configure the same behavior for another account. A shortcut in the current-user Startup folder affects only that profile, while the common Startup folder affects every user who signs in.

Microsoft documents this workflow for Windows 11 and Windows 10 in Configure Startup applications in Windows (accessed October 13, 2026).

How to configure a startup app from Settings

  1. Select Start, then open Settings. You can also search for Settings from the Start menu.
  2. In Settings, select Apps, then choose Startup. Windows displays the startup applications it has registered for your account.
  3. Scroll through the list or use the app names to locate the program you want to change.
  4. Switch the app On if it should open automatically when you sign in, or switch it Off if it should no longer open automatically.
  5. If an entry has a chevron beside it, select the chevron to view or change the advanced settings that Windows makes available for that app.

The change applies to the next applicable sign-in. It does not close an instance that is already running, so close the program separately if it is currently open. Likewise, enabling a startup entry does not necessarily open the program immediately during the same session; sign out and sign back in, or restart Windows, to check the sign-in behavior.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

For a clean test, change one entry at a time, close the app if it is open, and then sign out and back in. This makes it easier to tell which setting changed the result. If an app has a delayed launch or waits for a network connection, give it time after sign-in before deciding that the toggle failed.

Choosing what to switch off

Start with apps you recognize and do not need immediately after signing in. A communication client, updater, game launcher, or utility can be opened manually when required. Windows may list security or hardware-related software as well, so do not disable an entry merely because its name is unfamiliar. If you cannot identify an entry, use its available advanced information or investigate the publisher and file path before changing it.

Consider the purpose of the app rather than its name alone. A program that synchronizes files, supplies a hardware tray control, or provides a sign-in notification may be useful even if it is not needed by everyone. Disabling it is reversible, but you may lose that automatic convenience until you launch the program manually or turn the entry back on.

Do not interpret an Off toggle as an uninstall command. It only removes that app’s automatic sign-in launch. You can reverse the decision at any time by returning to the same page and switching the entry back to On.

When an app is not shown in Settings

Settings and Task Manager manage applications registered in Windows with a startup task. Microsoft also documents a File Explorer method for applications that are not represented in that registered list. The method uses a shortcut placed in a Startup folder, either for your account only or for every user on the computer.

Check both Settings and Task Manager before concluding that an app has no startup option. If it appears in neither registered list, the folder method is the supported next step. A folder shortcut is a separate startup mechanism, so it may not later appear as a normal On/Off entry in Settings.

Use a Startup folder for your account

  1. Press Windows key + R to open the Run dialog, or open File Explorer and use its address bar.
  2. Enter shell:appsfolder and press Enter. This opens a view of installed apps from which you can locate the program.
  3. Open a second File Explorer window and enter shell:startup. This opens the Startup folder for the current Windows user.
  4. Arrange the two windows so both are visible, then drag the app shortcut from the applications window into the Startup folder.
  5. Sign out and sign back in to test the shortcut-based launch. To remove this startup entry later, delete its shortcut from the same folder; that does not uninstall the application.

The current-user command corresponds to %userprofile%AppDataRoamingMicrosoftWindowsStart MenuProgramsStartup. A shortcut in this location applies only to the account whose profile contains the folder.

Use the exact shortcut for the application you intend to launch. Dragging the wrong item or a document shortcut can cause a different file to open at sign-in. If the shortcut is no longer wanted, remove the shortcut from the Startup folder rather than deleting the installed program from another location.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Configure startup for every user

To apply a shortcut-based startup entry to all users, open a second File Explorer window with shell:common startup instead of shell:startup. Drag the app shortcut from the shell:appsfolder window into that common folder. Microsoft identifies the corresponding path as %ProgramData%MicrosoftWindowsStart MenuProgramsStartup.

Use the common folder only when every account should receive the launch. A shared shortcut can make an app open for people who do not need it, and changing this folder may require permission appropriate to the computer. For one person’s preference, the current-user folder is the narrower choice.

Scope Run command Folder path Who receives the launch
Current user shell:startup %userprofile%AppDataRoamingMicrosoftWindowsStart MenuProgramsStartup Only the signed-in user whose profile contains the shortcut
All users shell:common startup %ProgramData%MicrosoftWindowsStart MenuProgramsStartup Every Windows user account that signs in on the computer

The folder approach is useful when an application does not expose a registered startup task. It is a separate mechanism from the Settings toggle, so a shortcut placed in a Startup folder will not necessarily appear as a switch on the Settings page.

Fix the “We couldn’t find this app” message

If Settings reports We couldn’t find this app, Windows has a startup entry whose target can no longer be resolved. Microsoft lists several possible causes:

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  • The application is on a removable drive or a network drive that is unavailable.
  • The file path recorded for the startup item no longer exists.
  • The application was uninstalled but its startup entry remains.

Select the information icon beside the warning when it is available. Windows can show the registry location or file path that contains the broken path. Use that information to determine whether the drive is disconnected, the program moved, or the software has been removed.

Before changing anything, reconnect the removable or network drive if it is supposed to be available, and check whether the application still exists at the displayed location. If the app was moved, repairing or reinstalling it may recreate a valid startup path. If it was intentionally uninstalled, the stale entry is no longer useful.

Registry entries can be relevant when diagnosing a broken startup item, but editing the registry is not required for the normal Settings procedure. Microsoft warns that registry changes can have unintended consequences and advises backing up the registry before making changes. If you do not know exactly which entry is stale and what the replacement path should be, remove the underlying application or repair its installation rather than deleting arbitrary registry values.

Settings versus Task Manager

Windows provides two built-in views for registered startup applications. Settings is the most direct place to turn an app on or off. Task Manager shows the same startup app list and adds startup-impact information, which is useful when you are investigating a slow sign-in.

Need Best view What it provides
Quickly enable or disable a registered startup app Settings > Apps > Startup A straightforward On/Off toggle and, where available, an app-specific chevron for advanced settings
Compare how registered entries affected startup measurements Task Manager > Startup apps The same startup list with a detailed Startup impact column
Configure an app absent from both registered lists File Explorer Startup folder A shortcut-based launch for the current user or all users

To inspect impact in Task Manager, open Task Manager, select Startup apps, and read the Startup impact value for each entry. Microsoft defines the labels using measured CPU and disk activity during startup:

Label Microsoft’s definition
None The startup item is disabled.
Not Measured The item is enabled, but measurement data is not available.
Low Impact Total CPU use is under 300 milliseconds and disk use is under 292 kilobytes.
Medium Impact CPU use is under 1 second but over 300 milliseconds, or disk use is under 3 megabytes but over 292 kilobytes.
High Impact CPU use is over 1 second or disk use is over 3 megabytes.

These are Microsoft’s classification thresholds, not a promise that switching off a particular app will produce a matching, visible reduction in boot or sign-in time. A high-impact label identifies a larger measured contribution under Microsoft’s criteria; it does not tell you whether the app is safe to disable or whether you need its sign-in features.

Use the impact column as a prioritization aid, not as a command to disable every high-impact item. A high-impact security or hardware utility may be more important than a low-impact launcher. Conversely, several low-impact apps can still add clutter when they all launch together. Make the decision based on your needs, then verify the result on your own device.

How startup apps relate to PC performance

Every application that launches at sign-in can add work while Windows is becoming ready. Reducing unnecessary automatic launches can help limit that startup workload, and Microsoft includes startup-app management among its tips to improve PC performance in Windows (accessed October 13, 2026).

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

There is no universal number of seconds that a particular toggle will save. Startup time depends on the computer, storage, Windows workload, app version, network conditions, and what else launches at the same time. Use Task Manager’s impact column to prioritize investigation, but judge the result on your own device after a normal sign-in rather than converting the threshold values into a guaranteed saving.

Performance troubleshooting should also distinguish sign-in launch from later background behavior. If an app still consumes resources after you turn its startup entry off, check the app’s own settings or Windows controls for services, scheduled tasks, notifications, or background permissions. The Startup page alone does not govern every one of those mechanisms.

If the computer still feels slow, compare the sign-in experience after changing a small number of entries and allow Windows to complete its normal startup work. Avoid changing many unrelated settings at once; otherwise you will not know which change affected the result. Startup management is one performance step, not a guarantee that every cause of a slow PC has been addressed.

Common mistakes to avoid

Looking in the wrong Settings section

The relevant path is Start > Settings > Apps > Startup. Startup repair, Windows Update, Storage, and Privacy pages do not provide this same registered-app toggle.

Free tools Windows power users keep installed

Assuming every launcher must appear in the list

Settings is not a complete inventory of every way software can start. If an app is absent, use the documented current-user or common Startup folder method rather than assuming the program cannot launch at sign-in.

Expecting Off to remove the app

An off switch changes automatic launch only. It neither uninstalls the program nor blocks manual opening. To remove software, use Windows’ installed-app controls or the software’s supported uninstaller, which is a separate task.

Confusing startup launch with background permissions

A program can avoid opening a visible window at sign-in yet still have another background component, or it can be configured to start while using separate background controls. Diagnose those behaviors independently.

Editing the registry as a first step

Registry editing is an advanced response to a broken path, not a normal way to flip a startup toggle. First inspect the information icon, verify whether the drive or application exists, and repair or uninstall the software. If registry work is unavoidable, back up the registry and make only a change you can identify and reverse.

Testing without signing out

Changing a toggle does not normally close an app that is already running or launch an enabled app in the middle of the current session. Sign out and back in, or restart Windows, before judging whether the startup setting worked.

A practical decision checklist

  • Need a quick on/off change? Use Settings > Apps > Startup.
  • Need to see measured startup impact? Open Task Manager’s Startup apps view.
  • The app is missing from both lists? Add its shortcut to shell:startup for one user or shell:common startup for all users.
  • You see “We couldn’t find this app”? Check the information icon, removable or network drives, the recorded path, and whether the app was uninstalled.
  • You want less background activity after sign-in? Remember that startup toggles do not replace an app’s background or service controls.
  • Several people use the PC? Decide whether the shortcut belongs in one user’s folder or the common folder for all accounts.

For the ordinary Windows 11 task, the Settings toggle is the safest and shortest route: choose the app, set it On or Off, and sign in again to verify the behavior. Use Task Manager for impact context and Startup folders only when the app is not represented in the registered list.

Frequently Asked Questions

How do I stop an app from opening on startup in Windows 11?

Open Start > Settings > Apps > Startup, find the app, and switch its toggle to Off. The app stays installed and can still be opened manually.

Where are startup apps in Windows 11 Settings?

Go to Start > Settings > Apps > Startup. The page lists applications registered with Windows startup tasks for the account you are using.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

How do I make an app open when I sign in?

If the app appears in the Startup page, switch it On. If it is absent, open shell:appsfolder and a separate shell:startup window, then drag the app shortcut into the Startup folder.

Why is my app missing from the Startup list?

The Settings and Task Manager lists cover registered startup tasks, not every startup mechanism. Use the current-user or common Startup folder method for an app that is not registered there.

Does disabling startup uninstall the app?

No. Turning an entry Off prevents its automatic launch at sign-in only. You can launch it manually or turn the entry back on later.

What is the difference between Settings and Task Manager for startup apps?

Settings provides the straightforward On/Off control. Task Manager shows the same registered list with a Startup impact column and labels such as Low, Medium, or High Impact.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

What does “We couldn’t find this app” mean?

Windows cannot resolve the startup entry’s recorded target. The app may be on an unavailable removable or network drive, its path may have changed, or it may have been uninstalled. Select the information icon to inspect the path or registry location.

Can I configure startup for every Windows user?

Yes. Place the shortcut in the common Startup folder by opening shell:common startup. A shortcut in shell:startup applies only to the current user.

The Bottom Line

Use Start > Settings > Apps > Startup for the normal Windows 11 on/off task. Switch an app on or off, then sign out and back in to verify the result. Use Task Manager when you need startup-impact context, and use shell:startup or shell:common startup when an app is missing from the registered list. Remember that these controls govern automatic sign-in launch, not every service or background activity.
