To stop the “Start backup” flow for Desktop, Documents, or Pictures in Windows 11, turn off that folder in OneDrive’s Manage backup settings. Open the OneDrive cloud icon in the taskbar notification area, then select Help & Settings > Settings > Sync and backup > Manage backup. Switch off the folder you want to stop backing up and choose where its existing files should remain.
This changes OneDrive’s backup for the selected folder; it does not necessarily remove every File Explorer reminder on every Windows 11 device. The procedure and labels are documented by Microsoft’s OneDrive folder-backup guidance.
Turn off “Start backup” for a folder

Select the OneDrive cloud icon in the notification area of the taskbar. If you do not see it, check the hidden icons.

Select Help & Settings, then Settings.

Open Sync and backup, then select Manage backup.

Turn off the toggle beside the folder you want to stop backing up, such as Desktop, Documents, or Pictures.

Read the prompt and select where the existing files should remain: in OneDrive or on the PC. Follow any additional instructions shown.
The exact prompt wording can vary with the OneDrive app or Windows version. Microsoft documents the same folder controls in its instructions for backing up known folders.

What changes when you stop folder backup?
Stopping backup does not automatically mean that existing files are deleted. Microsoft says files already backed up remain in the OneDrive folder and may no longer appear in the corresponding device folder. You can move files back to the device folder manually if needed. New files added to that device folder after backup is stopped will not be backed up to OneDrive through that folder backup. See Microsoft’s explanation of what happens when folder backup stops.
Cloud-only files may need to download first
If a file is stored only in OneDrive online, it may not be available to move locally yet. In File Explorer, right-click the file or folder and choose Always keep on this device. Wait for the download to finish, then retry the move or follow the Manage backup prompt. Microsoft describes this availability requirement in its OneDrive folder-backup instructions.

Is Windows Backup the same setting?
No. Windows 11 also provides related OneDrive folder-sync controls at Settings > Accounts > Windows backup > Manage sync settings. That area includes other backup and settings options, so use OneDrive’s Manage backup page when your goal is specifically to stop backup for one known folder. Microsoft documents the Windows Backup route in its Windows Backup guidance.
When to unlink or remove OneDrive instead
Turning off one folder’s backup is narrower than disconnecting or removing OneDrive. If you want to stop syncing the account on the PC more broadly, unlink OneDrive; if you want it removed or hidden, use the relevant Windows app or uninstall options. These are separate actions and can affect more than Desktop, Documents, or Pictures. See Microsoft’s stop or uninstall OneDrive guidance.

Keep a separate Windows backup if you still need one
Disabling OneDrive folder backup is not a requirement to set up another backup. Windows File History can use an external drive or network location as a destination. That is a separate local or network backup arrangement: choose a destination that is available and configured, then make sure you know how you would restore files from it. Microsoft explains the setup in its File History guidance.
