Snap Layouts became useful to me when I stopped positioning every window by hand: choose a layout, put an app in a zone, then let Snap Assist help fill the open spaces. Windows 11 offers this as a built-in way to arrange apps, not a guaranteed productivity boost; Microsoft’s documentation explains the controls but does not quantify time saved.

What changes when you use Snap Layouts?

Manual placement means dragging and resizing each window until it fits. Snap Layouts instead lets you choose a predefined arrangement, place the current window in one of its zones, and select other open windows for the remaining spaces with Snap Assist. It is a different workflow, not a measured speed ranking over dragging or keyboard shortcuts.

Microsoft describes Snap as a Windows feature for positioning and resizing windows with a mouse, touch, or keyboard. Snap Layouts is the menu of arrangements; Snap Assist is the prompt that helps fill the arrangement after you place a window.

How to open a layout and fill it

  1. Open the layout menu. Hover over the window’s maximize button, or press Win+Z. Microsoft Learn says Snap layouts are accessible through either method.
  2. Choose a zone. Select the position you want for the active window. Available arrangements can depend on the screen and configuration.
  3. Complete the layout. When Snap Assist offers other open windows, select one for each remaining space you want to fill. You do not have to fill every zone.

Microsoft says layouts appear automatically for most desktop apps, but some desktop apps may not show them. If the menu does not appear in a particular app, the feature is not necessarily broken.

Which window-placement method should you use?

Method How you start Placement and remaining spaces Support and prompts
Manual mouse placement Drag a window toward a screen edge or corner. Drop it into a displayed position; Snap Assist can offer other windows to fill remaining spaces. Windows supports mouse snapping; Snap behavior and prompts are configurable.
Snap Layouts Hover over the maximize button or press Win+Z. Choose a zone in a predefined arrangement; Snap Assist can help fill the other spaces. Layouts appear automatically for most, but not all, desktop apps.
Keyboard snapping Press Win+Left or Win+Right to place the active window on the corresponding side. Microsoft also documents Win+Alt+Up and Win+Alt+Down for the top and bottom halves. Move the active window using the shortcut; the cited shortcut documentation does not describe this as selecting a layout from the flyout. Uses Windows’ documented keyboard shortcuts. Other Snap prompts are controlled separately in Multitasking settings.

Where to change Snap settings

Open Settings > System > Multitasking and expand Snap windows. The main toggle turns snapping on or off. The expanded options let you adjust Snap Assist, the maximize-button flyout, the top-of-screen Snap bar, Snap groups, and whether windows snap before reaching the screen edge.

These options control related parts of the experience rather than one single prompt. For example, the flyout appears at the maximize button, while the Snap bar appears when dragging a window to the top of the screen. Snap groups can make arranged windows available through taskbar hover, Task View, and Alt+Tab. If a prompt is missing, check these settings before assuming your device needs an upgrade.

What this workflow can—and cannot—promise

The practical case for Snap Layouts is that selecting a predefined arrangement and filling it can suit people who repeatedly organize several app windows. Whether that feels easier depends on the apps and layout you use. Microsoft’s official documentation describes the feature and its controls, but does not establish a time-saving percentage or a general productivity gain. My experience of changing how I multitask is personal, not a measured result for every Windows 11 user.
