Your Windows 11 PC may not be too old: startup apps, background activity, power mode, visual effects, low storage, or other causes can make it feel slow. Check what is actually using resources before changing settings or considering an upgrade. Microsoft notes that older PCs with outdated hardware may not improve significantly from its recommended steps.
First, identify what feels slow
“Slow” can mean a long startup, lag when opening apps, sluggish response while working, or poor battery life. Those symptoms can have different causes. Microsoft Support lists limited storage, too many startup apps, outdated software, and hardware that no longer meets modern performance needs among the possibilities. Its Windows performance guidance recommends checking resource use rather than assuming one setting is responsible.
- Open Task Manager and inspect CPU, memory, disk, and startup-app usage while the problem is happening.
- Notice whether the slowdown occurs mainly at sign-in, with a particular app, or across the whole system.
- Make one change at a time, then check whether the symptom improves. This helps distinguish a useful adjustment from a coincidence.
Microsoft does not provide a quantified speed gain for these steps, so treat them as troubleshooting checks, not guaranteed boosts.
Reduce unnecessary startup activity
Apps that start automatically can affect both startup time and overall system performance. In Windows 11, go to Settings > Apps > Startup, or open Task Manager > Startup apps. Task Manager displays a startup-impact rating to help you decide what to inspect.
#1 Best Overall
- 1.1 GHz (boost up to 2.4GHz) Intel Celeron N5030 Quad-Core
- Review the apps listed and identify ones you recognize.
- Turn off automatic startup only for apps you do not need immediately after signing in.
- Leave security tools, device utilities, or other apps enabled if you rely on them at startup or do not know what they do.
Disabling startup does not necessarily uninstall an app; you can still open it when needed. See Microsoft’s startup-app instructions for details.
Choose background permissions selectively
For supported apps, Windows 11 may let you control whether they can keep working when you are not using them. The setting is typically under Settings > Apps > Installed apps > [app] > Advanced options, where available. Microsoft explains that background activity can support syncing, notifications, and updates, but can also use battery power.
Rank #2
- 256 GB SSD of storage.
- Multitasking is easy with 16GB of RAM
- Equipped with a blazing fast Core i5 2.00 GHz processor.
| Permission | What it means while the app is inactive | Trade-off |
|---|---|---|
| Always | The app can continue supported background activity. | Syncing, updates, and notifications can continue, with possible additional power use. |
| Power optimized | Windows manages background activity to balance function and power use. | Some activity may be limited to help conserve power. |
| Never | The app does not run in the background. | You may not receive its notifications or updates while it is inactive. |
Use Never only when delayed notifications or syncing are acceptable. This control applies to supported apps; desktop apps may have separate background or startup controls. Microsoft describes these options in its pages on managing app background activity and background apps and privacy.

Adjust visual effects if the interface feels sluggish
Windows visual effects can use system resources. If menus, animations, or other interface elements feel slow, search Windows for Adjust the appearance and performance of Windows and open the matching settings result. Choosing Adjust for best performance reduces visual polish in favor of responsiveness. The effect depends on the PC; Microsoft does not promise a particular improvement.

Use power mode for the task at hand
On supported devices, open Settings > System > Power & battery and choose a mode. Microsoft notes that available options can depend on the hardware and manufacturer.
| Mode | Priority | Practical consideration |
|---|---|---|
| Best performance | Maximizes performance. | Uses more power, can drain a laptop battery faster, and may make the laptop warmer. |
| Balanced | Balances performance and battery use. | A general-purpose choice when neither maximum performance nor battery saving is the priority. |
| Best power efficiency | Prioritizes saving battery. | Useful when battery life matters more than maximum performance. |
Best performance is most relevant for plugged-in or demanding work when you accept its power and warmth trade-offs. It may not be offered on every PC. See Microsoft’s power-mode guidance.

Check Windows updates and available storage
Outdated software and limited storage can contribute to performance problems. Check Windows Update, then review Settings > System > Storage for categories using space and Windows cleanup recommendations. Storage Sense can remove temporary files and help free space needed for updates; review what it will remove before running cleanup.

Check drives, running apps, and restart
Use Task Manager to see whether a process is consuming unusually high CPU, memory, or disk resources. Close apps you are not using, especially when several are open, and restart Windows if you have not done so recently. Microsoft also includes Windows’ built-in drive optimization in its performance checklist; use that tool rather than assuming manual defragmentation is right for every drive.
Know when settings are not the answer
If the PC remains slow after these checks, the limiting factor may be its hardware or storage capacity. Microsoft cautions that older PCs with outdated hardware may see no significant improvement from its steps, and says upgrading may be the best long-term solution in those cases. Diagnose the constraint first: an upgrade must be compatible with the exact PC and address the actual bottleneck.
Windows 11’s listed minimum requirements include 4 GB of RAM and 64 GB of storage, but those are compatibility minimums, not recommended performance targets or proof that adding a particular amount will fix a specific computer. Check Microsoft’s Windows 11 system requirements and your PC maker’s specifications before considering hardware changes.
