If Windows 11 takes too long to start, first note where the delay happens: before the sign-in screen, while signing in, or after the desktop appears. If you can reach Windows, start with reversible checks such as reviewing startup apps and installing available updates. Use clean boot to test for app or service conflicts; reserve Startup Repair and other recovery tools for cases where Windows will not start normally.

First, identify when the delay happens

“Slow boot” can describe different symptoms. A delay before the sign-in screen is different from a slow sign-in or a desktop that remains sluggish after it appears. Startup apps are one documented cause of slower startup and increased background activity, but they are not the only possible cause. Limited storage, background activity, outdated software, and older hardware can also affect overall PC performance.

  • Before sign-in: Note whether Windows eventually reaches the sign-in screen or fails to start. If it fails to start, go to the recovery section below.
  • During sign-in: Check which apps launch automatically; they can add work as Windows starts.
  • After the desktop appears: Check startup apps and other performance factors, such as storage and background activity. A slow desktop is not necessarily a Windows startup failure.

Microsoft’s guidance does not establish one universal cause or a guaranteed boot-time improvement. Work through the relevant checks and see which, if any, changes the symptom.

Disable startup apps you do not need

Windows lets you control apps that open automatically. Disabling an app here does not uninstall it; it stops that app from launching at sign-in. Keep apps you rely on, and check unfamiliar security, device, or accessibility software before turning it off.

  1. Open Settings > Apps > Startup.
  2. Turn off the apps you do not need to open automatically.
  3. Alternatively, open Task Manager > Startup apps and disable unneeded entries. Task Manager includes a startup-impact view that can help you decide which entries to review.
  4. Restart the PC and check whether the delay changes.

If you are unsure what an entry does, leave it enabled until you have checked its purpose. Avoid disabling items simply because their names are unfamiliar.

Check Windows updates and other performance factors

Install available Windows updates

Open Settings > Windows Update and check for updates. Windows updates can include fixes and performance improvements, but an update is not guaranteed to shorten startup on every PC.

Review optional driver updates

Windows Update may offer optional driver updates. Microsoft describes these as noncritical updates that may help; consider them when relevant to your device, but do not assume installing one will fix a boot delay.

Reduce storage and background burdens where relevant

If the PC also feels slow after sign-in, consider uninstalling apps you no longer use, reviewing which apps can run in the background, and cleaning up storage. Microsoft lists limited storage and background activity among possible contributors to poor performance. These are general performance measures, not guaranteed boot-time fixes.

Use a clean boot to find a software conflict

A clean boot starts Windows with essential drivers and startup programs, helping you test whether a third-party service or startup app is causing a conflict. It is a diagnostic state, not a permanent speed setting, and some functionality may be temporarily unavailable.

Start Windows in a clean boot state

  1. Save your work. Press Windows + R, enter msconfig, and open System Configuration.
  2. On the Services tab, select Hide all Microsoft services, then select Disable all.
  3. Open the Startup tab and select the link to open Task Manager.
  4. In Task Manager’s Startup apps list, disable enabled items. Keep track of what you disable so you can restore it.
  5. Close Task Manager, select OK in System Configuration, and restart the PC.

If a network policy prevents these changes, do not work around it. Microsoft advises getting guidance from a Microsoft support engineer before changing advanced boot options in that situation.

Interpret the result and restore normal startup

If the delay goes away in clean boot, a disabled service or startup app may be involved. Re-enable items systematically; testing half the services or apps at a time can narrow down the cause with fewer restarts. Once you identify the likely item, check with its maker or leave it disabled if appropriate.

If Windows will not start normally, use recovery tools

Recovery tools address startup failures and diagnosis, not routine performance tuning. You can reach the Windows Recovery Environment (WinRE) from Windows recovery options when available; if Windows cannot start, Windows may enter recovery after startup problems. The exact way to reach WinRE can vary with the situation.

Run Startup Repair for a startup failure

In WinRE, select Troubleshoot > Advanced options > Startup Repair. Startup Repair checks for certain problems preventing Windows from starting and attempts repairs. Examples include missing or damaged system files, corrupted boot configuration data, a damaged master boot record, incompatible drivers, and registry errors. It may identify a problem it cannot fix.

Use Startup Settings for diagnosis

From WinRE, open Troubleshoot > Advanced options > Startup Settings, then restart to view the available startup choices. Two diagnostic options are:

  • Safe Mode: Starts Windows with a limited set of files and drivers. This can help narrow down whether default settings or basic drivers are involved.
  • Enable boot logging: Creates ntbtlog.txt, a list of drivers loaded during startup that can assist with troubleshooting.

These options are diagnostic aids, not routine methods for making Windows start faster. Advanced recovery choices can carry risks; get technical help if you are unsure what to select.

Check for a BitLocker recovery key

If the device is encrypted, Windows may require the BitLocker recovery key to complete recovery steps. Locate the key before proceeding so you are not blocked at a recovery prompt.

When the PC’s hardware may be the limit

Microsoft cautions that a PC with outdated hardware may not improve significantly from software performance steps, and upgrading the device may be the best long-term option. That is general guidance, not a recommendation for a particular component: the appropriate upgrade depends on the exact PC model and its compatibility. Check the manufacturer’s documentation before buying hardware.
