Windows 11’s most useful time-savers are built in: use Win+V for clipboard history, Win+H for voice typing, and Win+Z to choose a window layout. Some features need to be enabled or depend on your Windows version and screen size, so the guide below shows what each shortcut does and how to use it.
Which Windows 11 shortcuts are worth learning first?
These shortcuts cover the common jobs: opening tools, switching between apps, arranging windows, capturing part of the screen, and editing text. The Win key is the Windows-logo key. Microsoft notes that common app shortcuts may behave differently in some applications; check the app’s own controls if one does not work.
Open tools and find files
- Win+E opens File Explorer.
- Win+I opens Settings.
- Win+R opens Run.
- Win+S opens Search.
Switch between apps and desktops
- Alt+Tab switches among open apps on the current desktop.
- Win+Tab opens Task View.
- Win+D displays or hides the desktop.
- Win+a number opens or switches to the app in that position on the taskbar.
Arrange, capture, and edit
- Win+an arrow key positions the active window on the corresponding side or edge of the screen.
- Win+Z opens Snap layouts.
- Win+Shift+S lets you select a screen region to capture to the clipboard.
- Ctrl+C copies, Ctrl+X cuts, Ctrl+V pastes, Ctrl+A selects all, and Ctrl+Z undoes in many apps.

How do you turn on and use clipboard history?
Clipboard history is off by default. It keeps a short list of copied items so you can paste something other than the most recent copy.

- Press Win+V. If prompted, choose the option to turn clipboard history on.
- If the prompt does not appear, open Settings > System > Clipboard and enable clipboard history.
- Copy text or another item, then press Win+V to open the history panel.
- Select an entry in the panel to paste it. Pin entries you want to keep available.
Microsoft Support says clipboard history holds up to 25 entries, with a maximum size of 4 MB per item. When space is needed, older unpinned items are cleared; pinned entries are retained. That makes the feature useful for reusing recent content, not for keeping a permanent archive. See Microsoft’s clipboard instructions.
Should you sync clipboard history across devices?
Sync is optional and must be enabled in clipboard settings. It is associated with using the same Microsoft or work account on the devices. You can choose automatic syncing or manual syncing; do not assume that every copied item is being sent to your other devices. Consider what you copy before enabling sync, especially on shared or work-managed devices.

How do voice typing and Voice access differ?
Win+H opens Windows dictation, also called voice typing, for speaking text instead of typing it. It is the quick option when your goal is to enter text in an app.
Voice access is a separate, broader feature for controlling Windows and authoring text with spoken commands. Microsoft documents it for Windows 11 version 22H2 and later and says it can work without an internet connection. Its command set includes opening apps, navigating and selecting controls, scrolling, and snapping windows. Use Microsoft’s Voice access command list to find supported commands. Do not treat Voice access and the Win+H dictation panel as the same interface.

How can you put two windows side by side?
For a quick comparison, snap one window to the left or right, then choose the other app to fill the remaining space. Windows offers three practical ways to place windows:

After snapping a window, Snap Assist can show other open windows to fill the remaining spaces. Choose one, then drag a divider between snapped panes to resize them. Layout choices can vary with display size. Microsoft’s Snap Windows guide explains the feature.

How do Focus sessions reduce interruptions?
A Focus session combines a timer with notification and taskbar controls. You can start one from the notification area, Settings, or the Clock app. By default, a session enables Do Not Disturb and suppresses taskbar badges and flashing. If you only want to manage interruptions without a timed session, configure notification suppression directly. Choose a Focus session when you also want a timer and the associated taskbar behavior; use notification settings when you want to control interruptions without starting a session.

Where should you start?
- Learn Win+E, Win+I, and Alt+Tab for everyday navigation.
- Turn on clipboard history if you often reuse copied material, and pin only items you need to keep handy.
- Try Win+H for dictating text; look to Voice access when you also need spoken control of apps and Windows.
- Use Win+Left/Right for quick two-window placement or Win+Z when you want to choose a layout.
- Start a Focus session when a timer and reduced notifications help with a specific work block.
