For Windows 11 Home, Microsoft says you need an internet connection and a Microsoft account to finish first-use setup. That does not mean you must keep using that account to sign in: after setup, you can switch to a local account in Settings. Choose a Microsoft account if you want Microsoft services and cross-device sync; choose a local account if you prefer a sign-in tied to one PC and independent of online access.
What is the difference between a local account and a Microsoft account?
A local account exists on one Windows device. It can sign in without an internet connection and is not connected to Microsoft’s cloud or other Microsoft services. A Microsoft account uses an email address and password across Windows and Microsoft services; settings and files can sync across devices. Sync depends on the relevant settings and services, and does not mean every file or app is automatically shared.
| Decision | Local account | Microsoft account |
|---|---|---|
| Signing in | Internet is not required to sign in to that device. | Online services and sync require internet access; the account connects Windows to Microsoft services. |
| Where it applies | Tied to one device; settings, files, and applications are limited to that device, according to Microsoft. | Can be used across devices and Microsoft services; settings and files can sync. |
| Windows 11 Home first-use setup | Microsoft’s requirements page says an internet connection and Microsoft account are required to complete first-use setup. | Follows the account requirement Microsoft documents for Home first-use setup. |
| Changing later | Can be changed to a Microsoft account in Settings. | Can be changed to a local account in Settings. |
| Password recovery | Microsoft warns that forgetting the password may prevent recovery if no password reset disk was created. | Recovery uses the Microsoft account’s recovery and security mechanisms; what is available depends on the account and recovery information. |
These are account characteristics, not a universal security verdict. Windows licensing, encryption, individual app sign-ins, and sync settings can have separate requirements. A local Windows sign-in does not, by itself, establish that all cloud features or Microsoft services are unavailable.
Can I install Windows 11 without a Microsoft account?
For Windows 11 Home, Microsoft’s requirements page states that an internet connection and Microsoft account are required to complete device setup on first use. This is specifically a Home first-use setup requirement; it should not be generalized to every Windows edition or organization-managed setup. Microsoft documents using installation media for Windows setup, but that does not change the stated Home account requirement.

Microsoft’s October 6, 2025 announcement for Windows 11 Insider Preview Dev Channel build 26220.6772 said it was removing known mechanisms for creating a local account in the Windows Setup experience (OOBE), and said users would need to complete OOBE with internet and a Microsoft account. That announcement concerns a preview build and gradual rollout, not proof that every stable build or installation route behaves identically. Unofficial setup workarounds are version-sensitive, and there is no reliable universal bypass established here; check guidance for the exact Windows build rather than assuming a workaround will work.
Can I switch to a local account after installing Windows 11?
Yes. Microsoft documents switching the account type in Windows Settings after setup. To move from a Microsoft account to a local account:

Choose a local account if
- You want a sign-in that works without an internet connection.
- You prefer an account tied to one PC rather than using the same Windows sign-in across devices.
- You do not need Windows settings and files to sync through a Microsoft account.
Choose a Microsoft account if
- You use Microsoft services and want Windows connected to them.
- You want the option to sync settings and files across devices.
- You prefer account-level recovery mechanisms over relying on a local password reset disk.
Microsoft recommends a Microsoft account for service integration and sync. For a local account, Microsoft advises considering a password reset disk because forgetting the password without one may prevent recovery. Neither option is universally right for every user: weigh the services you use against your preference for a device-local sign-in.

What if the PC belongs to work or school?
Use your organization’s enrollment instructions rather than treating this as a personal-account choice. Microsoft says a personal Microsoft account is not required for devices joined to Microsoft Entra ID or an on-premises Active Directory domain. Entra domain join is not available in Windows Home. Organizational enrollment can involve work credentials and device-management policies, so check with your IT administrator about the correct setup route.
