After installing Windows 11, start with updates, confirm security, and then tailor privacy, startup, power, and backup settings to how you use the PC. These steps help you configure Windows deliberately; they are not a universal debloat recipe, and settings changes cannot guarantee a speed improvement—slow performance can have several causes, especially on older hardware.

1. Install Windows updates first

Open Start > Settings > Windows Update, then select Check for updates. Install available updates and restart if Windows asks. Updates often include fixes and performance improvements.

If Windows reports that the device is up to date, you can check Windows Update > Advanced options > Optional updates. Optional updates may include non-critical drivers. Review them for your particular device rather than installing every offered driver automatically.

2. Confirm Windows Security protection

Open Windows Security from Start and check that protection is active. Windows Security brings together Microsoft Defender Antivirus, Windows Firewall, and Smart App Control. If another antivirus app is installed and turned on, Defender Antivirus switches off automatically; it turns back on if that app is uninstalled. Do not stack antivirus products or turn off protection as routine cleanup.

Choose the right firewall network profile

Keep the firewall on. A home network can be set to Private when you trust its devices. Treat public Wi-Fi, such as a coffee-shop network, as Public. Turning off the firewall can make the PC more vulnerable to unauthorized access.

3. Review privacy permissions and suggestions

Open Settings > Privacy & security. Review permissions for capabilities such as location, camera, microphone, contacts, and calendar, then decide which apps need each one. Microsoft’s guidance is direct: “If you turn off access for an app, that app can’t use the related data or feature.”

Remember the desktop-app limitation

Windows permission lists mostly apply to Store apps. Traditional desktop apps may not appear there, so check those apps’ own settings as well. A Windows toggle does not necessarily control every program’s access.

Personalized prompts and recommendations

If you want fewer personalized prompts or suggested content, review the relevant privacy settings. The General privacy settings page is being replaced by Recommendations & offers in newer Windows 11 versions, so use the labels visible on your installed build rather than relying on one layout.

4. Reduce apps that launch or run in the background

Choose what starts at sign-in

Open Settings > Apps > Startup, or go to Task Manager > Startup apps. Disable only apps you do not want launching when you sign in. Keep essential device, security, accessibility, and sync software enabled. Task Manager’s startup-impact information can help you decide which entries to review.

Startup convenience has a trade-off: a leaner sign-in may mean an app no longer opens automatically. Avoid disabling every entry or editing the registry as routine cleanup; registry changes can have unintended consequences.

Limit background activity app by app

For supported apps, open Settings > Apps > Installed apps > [app] > Advanced options > Background app permissions. Choose Power optimized to let Windows balance power use with periodic updates and notifications. Choose Never to stop that app’s background notifications or updates. Desktop apps may not have this control and may need to be configured within the app itself.

5. Set power mode and screen or sleep timeouts

Choose a power mode for your workload

On a laptop, open Settings > System > Power & battery > Power mode. Windows offers Best power efficiency, Balanced, and Best performance. Balanced is a reasonable starting point for mixed use; choose efficiency when battery life matters more or performance for demanding work. The best choice depends on your device and workload, and no specific battery-life increase is guaranteed.

Set screen and sleep timing

Go to Settings > System > Power & battery > Screen, sleep, & hibernate timeouts. Shorter timeouts can suit battery conservation or shared spaces, while longer ones can suit stationary work. Windows’ documented defaults vary by device type, so choose timings that fit your routine rather than treating one number as best for every PC.

6. Verify backup and sync settings

Open Windows Backup from Start, or go to Settings > Accounts > Windows backup. Review the selected folders and preferences. Windows Backup can sync selected folders—including Desktop, Documents, Pictures, Videos, and Music—to OneDrive, along with certain settings and preferences.

The feature is focused on personal Microsoft accounts. Some options depend on signing in to OneDrive and having available storage; work or school account behavior may be limited or managed by an organization. Check the backup status shown in Windows rather than assuming that signing in protected every file.

Cloud sync and a local copy are different choices

OneDrive sync and a backup copy on external media are separate approaches. Microsoft’s reinstall guidance lists an external hard drive or USB flash drive alongside a cloud location as backup options. A local copy is optional, and configuring Windows does not require buying a drive. Windows settings alone do not establish what capacity or model is right for your files.
