Use Windows Sandbox for a short-lived experiment with an untrusted app or file, provided you deliberately turn off sharing you do not need. For a Windows-integrated AI agent that needs its own identity, narrowly granted permissions, and a persistent project workflow, Microsoft’s agent account and workspace model is the better architectural fit when that feature is available and documented for your device. They are not interchangeable products.
The phrase “security containers” is also ambiguous. Microsoft documents Windows Sandbox and an agent-security direction built around separate accounts and workspaces. A secondary report calls a newer technology “Microsoft Execution Containers (MXC),” but the primary Microsoft sources reviewed here do not confirm its availability, supported builds, or isolation behavior. Treat those claims as unverified until Microsoft publishes release documentation.
The decision in one minute
- Choose Windows Sandbox when you need a disposable, bounded place to inspect a suspicious file, test a one-off application, or run an agent briefly. Start from a restrictive
.wsbconfiguration rather than accepting its sharing defaults. - Choose an agent account and workspace when the agent is part of a Windows workflow and needs a distinct identity, granular permissions, and an explicitly contained working area. Microsoft describes these controls as part of its Windows 11 agent-security work; verify release status and policy support before depending on them.
- Do not choose on the word “container” alone. Windows Server containers, Windows Sandbox, an agent workspace, and the reported MXC technology are different concepts. Their security properties cannot be inferred from the label.
Neither option makes an AI agent trustworthy by itself. An agent can follow hostile instructions hidden in a document or web page, request access to a sensitive folder, or attempt to move data through an enabled network or clipboard channel. Isolation must be combined with least privilege, deliberate data sharing, and review of the agent’s actions.

Windows Sandbox is a temporary Windows environment intended for experimenting with applications and files. It is created from a dynamically generated image rather than a separately downloaded Windows installation, as described in Microsoft’s Windows Sandbox architecture documentation. When the session closes, its contents are discarded after you confirm deletion.

That disposable lifecycle is useful for an AI agent that should not retain a tool, package, browser cache, or downloaded payload between runs. It is not a guarantee that every change disappears: a folder you map from the host can remain affected if the mapping is writable.
Documented default sharing
Microsoft’s Windows Sandbox configuration guide describes these defaults for the documented configuration; defaults can change with the Windows build you use:
- Networking is enabled.
- Clipboard redirection is enabled.
- Virtualized GPU is enabled on non-Arm64 devices.
- Host microphone input is shared.
- Video input and printer redirection are disabled.
- Protected Client mode is disabled.
- Default Sandbox memory capacity is 4 GB.
For an AI agent, the first two items are especially important. Enabled networking lets the agent reach external services, download content, or send data. Enabled clipboard redirection creates a path for text or other clipboard data to move between the host and the Sandbox. If the task does not require either capability, disable it.
The Tool Desk

A Sandbox configuration file can set virtualized GPU, networking, mapped folders, a logon command, audio and video input, Protected Client mode, printer redirection, clipboard redirection, and memory. These controls let you create a repeatable profile for a particular agent task instead of changing settings manually each time.
Protected Client mode runs Sandbox in an AppContainer Isolation execution environment. Microsoft’s configuration documentation describes additional credential, device, file, network, process, and window isolation in that mode. It can add friction for applications that expect broad integration, so test the smallest configuration that still completes the job.
Mapped folders are a host trust boundary
A mapped folder exposes a host directory inside the Sandbox. You can expose it read-only or writable. Microsoft warns that applications running in the Sandbox can compromise mapped files or otherwise affect the host, and changes made through a writable mapping remain after the Sandbox is disposed.

Give an agent only a narrowly scoped working directory. Do not map your whole user profile, credential stores, browser data, SSH keys, password-manager exports, or a drive root for convenience. Use read-only access when the agent only needs to inspect files. If it must write, create a disposable staging folder, copy in only the required inputs, and review or delete the outputs after the run.
What Microsoft’s agent account and workspace model means
Microsoft’s Windows 11 Security Book: Agentic security describes a different approach for Windows-integrated agents. Instead of treating every run as a disposable desktop, the design uses a distinct agent account, limited agent privileges, operational trust, and an agent workspace with runtime isolation and granular permissions.
The practical distinction is identity and authorization. A separate agent account can prevent the agent from inheriting a person’s full desktop permissions. Granular permissions can limit which resources the agent may use and make access an explicit policy decision. A workspace gives the agent a defined area in which to operate rather than relying on an operator to construct a temporary Sandbox mapping for every task.
Microsoft says these controls are being developed and refined. The page is not evidence that every described control is generally available on every Windows 11 installation. Before deployment, confirm the exact Windows build, management policy, agent support, permission prompts, and resource types documented for your device.
Why this is not simply “Sandbox with a different name”
Windows Sandbox is a documented, disposable environment with a configurable set of host-sharing channels. The agent workspace is an agent-security model centered on identity, permissions, and runtime containment. The reviewed Microsoft material does not say that an agent workspace is implemented as Windows Sandbox or that the two have identical persistence, networking, or device behavior.
Windows Sandbox and the agent workspace compared
| Decision axis | Windows Sandbox | Windows agent account/workspace model |
|---|---|---|
| Intended use | Disposable experimentation with applications and files. | Windows-integrated agent operation using a distinct identity and contained workspace. |
| Configuration | .wsb settings control networking, mapped folders, logon command, memory, clipboard, devices, GPU, and Protected Client mode. |
Microsoft describes separate agent accounts, limited privileges, and granular permissions; verify the concrete feature and controls available on the target system. |
| Host exposure | Determined by mappings, clipboard, networking, device redirection, and other enabled channels. Documented defaults include networking and clipboard. | Designed around access granted to the agent; the exact prompts, resources, and policy controls depend on the released feature. |
| Persistence | Sandbox content is deleted when the session closes, while changes to writable host-mapped folders persist. | The agent-security guidance does not establish a general persistence rule for every workspace implementation. |
| Availability guidance | Listed by Microsoft’s edition table for Windows Pro, Enterprise E3/E5, and Education A3/A5. | Described as an evolving security direction; do not infer broad availability from the guidance page alone. |
| Best fit | A bounded, short-lived task whose sharing channels you can explicitly control. | A continuing Windows workflow that needs agent-specific identity and permission management once the exact feature is available. |
Configure Windows Sandbox for an AI agent
Use the following procedure when the agent must run in Sandbox. The goal is to make every host-to-Sandbox channel an explicit decision.

- Confirm the edition and device policy. Microsoft’s Windows Security Features Licensing and Edition Requirements table lists Windows Sandbox for Windows Pro, Enterprise E3/E5, and Education A3/A5. Check the current table and your organization’s policy before deployment. Hardware and virtualization requirements also apply.
- Start with a task-specific staging folder. Create a directory containing only the files the agent needs. Keep credentials and unrelated projects outside it.
- Disable networking unless the task requires it. An agent that only needs to parse a local file, compile code from supplied sources, or inspect an application usually does not need outbound access. If network access is required, limit the task at the host, firewall, proxy, or service layer as well as in Sandbox.
- Disable clipboard redirection when copy and paste are unnecessary. This removes a convenient data path between the host and the agent session. Use explicit file transfer through the staging folder instead.
- Map only the staging folder. Prefer a read-only mapping for inspection. For a build or transformation task that must write, map a disposable output folder as writable and treat every resulting file as untrusted until reviewed.
- Consider Protected Client mode. Enable it when its additional isolation is compatible with the agent and tools. Applications that require broader integration may fail, so test with a non-sensitive sample first.
- Launch the agent with the least privilege it can use. Do not give it administrator rights merely to avoid troubleshooting. If a tool needs elevation, identify that tool and decide whether the task belongs in Sandbox at all.
- Close and delete the session when finished. Confirm deletion when Windows prompts. Then inspect any writable host folder, downloaded output, logs, and service-side data separately; those are not part of the disposable Sandbox image.
Example restrictive configuration
This example disables network and clipboard sharing, disables the virtualized GPU, maps one host folder read-only, and starts a command. Replace the paths with a deliberately created staging directory. The configuration controls are documented by Microsoft; choose the logon command appropriate for your agent.
<Configuration>
<VGpu>Disable</VGpu>
<Networking>Disable</Networking>
<ClipboardRedirection>Disable</ClipboardRedirection>
<MappedFolders>
<MappedFolder>
<HostFolder>C:AgentStaging</HostFolder>
<SandboxFolder>C:Work</SandboxFolder>
<ReadOnly>true</ReadOnly>
</MappedFolder>
</MappedFolders>
<LogonCommand>
<Command>C:Workstart-agent.cmd</Command>
</LogonCommand>
</Configuration>
Save the file with a .wsb extension and open it to launch Sandbox. A command file placed in a read-only mapping can start the agent, but it cannot update that mapping. If the agent must produce files, use a separate writable output mapping and review the results after shutdown.
When networking is unavoidable
Some agents need an API, package repository, or remote model endpoint. Treat that requirement as a separate risk decision rather than enabling networking permanently. Use a dedicated account or token with the smallest scope, avoid placing long-lived secrets in the mapped folder, record which destinations are required, and assume that content fetched from the network may contain instructions designed to redirect the agent.
AI-agent threats that isolation does not solve
Cross-prompt injection
Microsoft identifies cross-prompt injection (XPIA) as a risk in which malicious content embedded in a document or user-interface element attempts to override an agent’s instructions. A poisoned README, web page, issue, email, or PDF can tell the agent to upload files, install malware, reveal secrets, or change its objective.
Sandbox can limit the damage if network, clipboard, mapped folders, and privileges are constrained, but it does not decide whether an instruction inside a document is legitimate. Use a workflow that separates untrusted input from approval, requires confirmation for external side effects, and gives the agent access only to the files and services needed for the current task.
Agent identity and signing
Microsoft’s guidance states: “Agents that integrate with Windows must be signed by a trusted source so that maliciously or poorly behaved agents can be revoked and blocked with a range of defense-in-depth measures like certificate validation and antivirus.” Treat an unsigned or unfamiliar agent as untrusted code. Verify its publisher, update path, requested permissions, and executable location before granting access to a workspace or host resources.

Administrator interaction is not a universal security boundary
Microsoft’s Secure Windows containers guidance says: “If the design of a container allows for an elevated (admin) process to interact with the host, then Microsoft does not consider this container to have a robust security boundary.” That sentence is Windows Server container guidance, not a direct evaluation of Windows Sandbox or the Windows agent workspace. It is still a useful design warning: do not assume the word “container” makes an administrator-level escape path safe.
Which option fits common scenarios?
Inspecting a suspicious download
Use Windows Sandbox. Disable networking and clipboard, map the sample read-only, and avoid mapping any directory that contains credentials or personal data. If analysis requires network behavior, use a controlled test network and assume the sample can attempt to contact external systems.
Testing a one-off desktop application
Use Windows Sandbox when the application can run without persistent installation or host integration. Keep the default session disposable, and do not make a writable host mapping unless you need to preserve a specific output.
Letting an agent edit one project directory
Sandbox can work if you expose only that project and choose read-only or writable access deliberately. A read-only mapping is appropriate for analysis; a writable mapping is appropriate only when you accept that the agent can alter host files and that those changes survive Sandbox deletion. This setup is not proven equivalent to Microsoft’s agent workspace.
Running an agent every day with separate permissions
Evaluate the agent account and workspace controls when they are released and supported on your Windows build. Their purpose is to give the agent an identity and permission scope designed for ongoing operation. Confirm how approval prompts, persistence, network access, device access, logging, and revocation work before moving production tasks into the workflow.
What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
Running an enterprise MCP server
Use Microsoft’s specific MCP containment guidance rather than assuming that an ordinary agent process is contained. The MCP server containment documentation requires, among other conditions, an executable server, package identity and MSIX registration, and a valid manifest with required metadata. Those requirements concern containment of an MCP server in an agent session; they are not a promise that every third-party AI agent is isolated.

“Security containers” and the reported MXC technology
A secondary report dated October 9, 2026 uses the name “MXC Sandbox for Codex on Windows” and attributes supported-build and availability details to Microsoft Execution Containers. The primary Microsoft documentation listed above does not confirm those details. The report alone is therefore insufficient to establish the technology’s release status, supported Windows builds, policy controls, isolation model, or resource-sharing behavior.
If you are evaluating a newly announced container feature, require primary documentation that answers five questions before deploying it:
- Which Windows editions and builds support it?
- Is it generally available, preview-only, or limited by an enterprise policy?
- What is the isolation boundary, especially for elevated processes?
- Which host resources are shared by default, and how are network, clipboard, files, devices, and credentials controlled?
- What persists after the agent exits, and how are permissions, logs, updates, and revocation managed?
Until those answers are documented by Microsoft, use the established Windows Sandbox controls for a disposable test or wait for the exact agent feature to be documented.
Quick wins for a faster PC:
Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →Edition and feature boundaries
Do not transfer requirements from one Windows feature to another. Microsoft’s security feature table lists Windows Sandbox and App containers for Windows Pro, Enterprise E3/E5, and Education A3/A5; that table does not prove that every agent-security control has the same edition requirements.
Windows Settings agent is a separate feature. Its documentation at Configure the agent in Windows Settings requires Windows 11 version 24H2 with KB5062660 or later, a Copilot+ PC, and an enabled temporary enterprise feature-control policy, along with supported language and geography conditions. Those requirements apply to the Settings agent described on that page, not to Windows Sandbox in general and not automatically to every agent workspace concept.
Organizations can also use policy controls. Microsoft publishes the WindowsSandbox Policy CSP; review the controls available to your management platform before assuming users can enable or change a setting locally.
A pre-run and post-run safety checklist
Before launch
- Identify the agent executable, publisher, update source, and requested permissions.
- Decide whether the task truly requires networking, clipboard, microphone, GPU, printers, or other device access.
- Create a staging folder containing only required inputs.
- Choose read-only versus writable mappings explicitly.
- Remove credentials, browser profiles, source-control tokens, and unrelated personal files from every exposed location.
- Define which actions require human approval, especially sending data, installing software, changing system settings, or deleting files.
During the run
- Watch for instructions inside documents or web content that conflict with the task.
- Check outbound destinations and authentication prompts instead of approving them automatically.
- Stop the session if the agent requests broader permissions than the task requires.
- Keep a record of files changed, commands run, packages installed, and external services contacted.
After shutdown
- Confirm Sandbox deletion.
- Inspect every writable mapped folder and remove outputs you do not trust.
- Revoke temporary tokens and review API or service logs if networking was enabled.
- Do not copy an agent-generated executable or script to the host without scanning and reviewing it.
Bottom line
Windows Sandbox is the documented choice for a one-off, disposable experiment, but its default networking and clipboard sharing make an unconfigured session a poor place to run an AI agent with access to sensitive files. Disable unnecessary channels, map the smallest possible folder, prefer read-only access, and remember that writable host mappings survive Sandbox deletion.
Recommended Free Tools
For a continuing Windows-integrated agent, Microsoft’s separate-account and agent-workspace model addresses identity and granular permissions that Sandbox does not establish. Use it only after confirming that the specific feature is available, supported, and documented on your device. Treat “security containers” and MXC claims as unresolved until primary Microsoft documentation defines their behavior.
