If Windows 11 Search appears as an icon instead of a text box, change its taskbar display setting: right-click the taskbar, select Taskbar settings, then under Taskbar items open Search and choose Search box. An icon-only control is a supported display option and does not, by itself, mean Search is broken.
Restore the Search text box

Right-click an empty area of the taskbar and select Taskbar settings.

Under Taskbar items, open the Search menu.

Select Search box. Microsoft describes this option as displaying a full text box for entering a search. The setting labels or location can vary by Windows version or configuration. Microsoft’s taskbar instructions

What the Search taskbar options mean
| Option | What appears |
|---|---|
| Search box | A full text box where you can enter a search. |
| Search icon and label | A magnifying-glass icon with the Search label. |
| Search icon only | A magnifying-glass icon without a text box. |
| Hide | No Search control on the taskbar. |
These are the taskbar presentation choices listed by Microsoft. If the control is set to icon only, switching to Search box changes how Search is displayed; it is not a repair for the Search service itself.

Use Search while the text box is missing
You can still open Windows Search without a full-width taskbar box. Press Windows key + S, or open Start and begin typing. If either method brings up Search and accepts your query, that points to a taskbar display choice rather than a broader Search failure. Microsoft documents these ways to use Windows Search.
If “Search box” is not available
Look for the setting at Settings > Personalization > Taskbar > Search. The taskbar options can differ with Windows version or configuration, so the menu may not match every device exactly.

If the option remains unavailable, testing with a new local Windows user account can help determine whether the problem is limited to your account. This is diagnostic advice from a Microsoft Q&A community response, not a guaranteed way to restore the setting. Microsoft Q&A discussion
If Search itself is not working
Use Windows Search troubleshooting only when Search fails beyond its taskbar appearance—for example, if opening Search with Windows key + S does not work as expected. The same Microsoft guidance includes a Windows 11 Search reset script. It requires administrator permission and may temporarily affect search-result relevance. A reset is an escalation step for a Search problem, not the first response to an icon-only taskbar control.
