To remove the Resume app button from a Windows 11 taskbar, open Settings > Apps > Resume and switch the overall Resume control off. The same page lets you block individual supported apps while leaving cross-device Resume available for others. Resume connects a Windows 11 PC with a linked Android phone, so its taskbar icon is not a normal pinned shortcut.
What the Resume button does
Windows 11’s cross-device Resume feature lets you continue certain activities from a linked Android phone on your PC. After you perform a supported action in a supported Android app, that app can appear on the PC taskbar with a small phone badge. Selecting the icon opens the corresponding experience on the computer.
For example, you might start listening to a track or podcast on your phone and then see an option on the PC to continue it. A supported browser page or WhatsApp conversation can work in the same way. The taskbar icon is generated by the cross-device feature; it is not an ordinary shortcut that you pinned yourself.
Microsoft documents the feature and its controls on its Cross-device Resume Feature support page. Microsoft says Resume is enabled by default when all listed prerequisites are satisfied.

Before changing the setting, check these requirements
The Resume page is intended for a specific phone-to-PC setup. Microsoft lists all of the following prerequisites:
- A PC running Windows 11 or later.
- An Android phone running Android 10 or later.
- Internet access on both the PC and the phone.
- The phone connected to the PC through Link to Windows.
- The phone listed under Mobile devices in the PC’s Windows settings.
The support documentation does not specify a minimum Windows 11 build number. It also does not promise that every Android app can provide a Resume action. If one of these requirements is missing, the Resume page or its app list may not behave as expected.
Turn off Resume for every supported app
Use the global control when you do not want cross-device Resume activity from any supported app to place a phone-badged icon on the taskbar.

- On the Windows 11 PC, open Settings. You can select the Settings icon from Start or press
Windows + I. - Select Apps in the Settings sidebar.
- Open Resume.
- Switch the main Resume toggle to Off.
Turning off this overall control disables Resume activity across the supported apps shown by Windows. It does not uninstall the phone app, remove Link to Windows, or delete your existing Windows settings; it controls whether the cross-device Resume feature can surface those activities on the taskbar.
Disable Resume for only one or a few apps
You can keep the feature available and block specific apps instead. This is useful when you want one type of activity—such as a conversation or music session—to continue across devices but do not want another app to create taskbar entries.

- Open Settings > Apps > Resume.
- Leave the overall Resume control enabled.
- Find the supported app you do not want to use with Resume.
- Switch that app’s individual control off.
Only the selected app is excluded by that setting. Other supported apps remain eligible to display a Resume icon when their requirements and supported actions are met.
Turn Resume back on
To restore the feature after disabling it, return to Settings > Apps > Resume and switch the overall Resume control on. If you previously disabled individual apps, review their app-level controls on the same page and enable only the ones you want to use.

Global switch or per-app switch?
| Choice | What it changes | When it fits |
|---|---|---|
| Overall Resume off | Stops Resume activity from all supported apps. | You do not want phone-based activity to appear on the Windows taskbar. |
| Individual app off | Blocks one supported app while the overall feature stays available. | You want cross-device continuation from selected apps only. |
| Overall Resume on | Allows eligible supported apps to offer Resume activity. | You want to continue phone activities on the PC. |
The setting controls the Resume feature, not ordinary taskbar pinning. Turning Resume off will not remove unrelated shortcuts that you manually pinned to the taskbar.
Which apps and actions does Microsoft list?
Microsoft’s support page labels the following list “As of January 2026.” It is a set of published examples, not a guarantee that the list is exhaustive or unchanged after that date.

| Android app | Activity Microsoft describes |
|---|---|
| Spotify | Continue listening to music tracks and podcast episodes on the PC. |
| vivo Browser | For vivo Android phone users, continue browsing in the PC’s default browser. |
| Continue a chat conversation on the PC. |
Availability depends on the app, the action you performed, the linked phone, and the account or connection state. Seeing an app in the published list does not mean every screen or action in that app will produce a Resume entry.
Why the taskbar icon may not appear
Resume is triggered by a supported activity, not simply by opening any phone app. Even with the feature enabled, Windows needs a qualifying action from a supported app and an active phone connection before it can show the phone-badged icon.
Check the phone connection
Confirm that the Android phone is connected to the PC through Link to Windows and that the same phone is visible under Mobile devices in Windows settings. A phone that is no longer linked cannot provide the cross-device context Resume requires.
Check Android and Windows versions
Verify that the phone runs Android 10 or later and that the PC runs Windows 11 or later. The Microsoft documentation does not identify a narrower Windows build requirement, so use the general Windows 11 requirement rather than assuming a particular build number.
Check internet access
Both devices need internet access. Test the connection on the phone and PC, then retry the supported action after connectivity is restored.

Check whether the activity is supported
Try an activity Microsoft identifies, such as continuing a Spotify track or podcast, continuing browsing from a vivo Android phone, or continuing a WhatsApp chat. Other apps may not expose a Resume action, and Microsoft’s January 2026 list should not be treated as a complete catalog.

Do not substitute an unrelated taskbar or notification setting. First verify the conditions that make the feature available:
- Confirm the PC is running Windows 11 or later.
- Confirm the Android phone is running Android 10 or later.
- Make sure both devices have internet access.
- Reconnect the phone with Link to Windows if necessary.
- Check that the phone appears under Mobile devices in PC settings.
After those checks, reopen Settings and look under Apps for Resume. Microsoft’s documented control is located there; the support page does not provide a separate alternate path or a minimum Windows build for cases where the page is absent.
What disabling Resume does—and does not do
- It does: prevent the cross-device Resume feature, globally or for selected apps, from offering those phone activities on the taskbar.
- It does not: uninstall Android apps, remove Link to Windows, delete WhatsApp chats, erase Spotify data, or unpin ordinary taskbar shortcuts.
- It does not: guarantee that every existing icon disappears instantly if that icon was created by another Windows feature or was manually pinned.
If an icon remains after you disable Resume, identify whether it has the phone badge and whether it was manually pinned. Only the phone-linked Resume entry is controlled by the Resume settings page.
Privacy and convenience considerations
Resume is designed for continuity: it puts a phone activity within reach on the PC without requiring you to start over. The trade-off is that supported activity can become visible in the Windows taskbar. Use the global switch if you do not want any phone-based activity surfaced, or use app-level switches when only particular apps are inappropriate for your PC.
Because the feature depends on a linked Android phone and internet access on both devices, disabling Resume does not sever the phone’s entire Windows connection. Other Link to Windows capabilities can remain configured unless you separately change those settings.
Quick Recap
Quick decision guide
- Choose overall Resume off when you want no Resume entries from the phone.
- Choose individual app off when you want to keep selected cross-device activities.
- Leave Resume on when you want supported phone activities to appear on the PC taskbar.
- If the control is unavailable, verify the Windows version, Android version, internet connections, Link to Windows connection, and Mobile devices listing before looking for another setting.
