Turn on Remember my apps at Settings > Accounts > Windows backup. The feature records your installed-app list for a personal Microsoft account so Windows can offer to restore that list when you set up a new PC or reinstall Windows.

What Remember My Apps does

Remember my apps is part of Windows 11 Backup. Its job is to retain a list of the apps installed on your Windows device. When you later configure another Windows 11 computer, or reinstall Windows on the existing one, Windows can use that list to present restoration choices.

Microsoft describes the feature this way: “Remember my apps: Windows will remember the apps you have installed and help you restore them from Microsoft Store on your new devices.” Read the full accessibility guide on Microsoft Support.

The wording matters. Remember my apps is not a full application-image backup. It does not promise to copy each program’s settings, profiles, licenses, plug-ins, saved projects, or other application data. It also does not guarantee that every traditional desktop program will install itself automatically. The documented behavior is an app-list reminder and a guided way to obtain apps again.

Before you switch it on

Check these conditions before troubleshooting the setting:

  • Use a personal Microsoft account. Microsoft’s consumer Windows Backup guidance is aimed at personal accounts. Work and school accounts cannot use the Remember my apps toggle.
  • Use the same account later. The backup association is useful during restoration only when you sign in to the new or reinstalled Windows installation with the Microsoft account that stored the backup.
  • Expect current Windows 11 labels. Microsoft’s documentation does not identify a particular build threshold. The wording or exact arrangement can vary between Windows 11 releases, even though the route remains under Accounts and Windows backup.
  • Do not buy hardware or software for this setting. It is a built-in Windows feature. External drives and paid utilities do not enable the toggle.

Enable Remember My Apps in Settings

  1. Open Settings. Press Windows+I, or select Start > Settings.
  2. Open your account backup page. In the left column, select Accounts, then choose Windows backup.
  3. Turn on the app-list option. Find Remember my apps and switch it on. If Windows asks you to sign in, complete the sign-in with the personal Microsoft account you intend to use on the replacement or reinstalled PC.
  4. Leave the setting enabled. Closing Settings does not cancel it; the switch remains part of your Windows Backup configuration. Return to the same page whenever you need to verify its state.

The setting is independent of a paid product. You are enabling a Windows 11 account feature, not creating a disk image or purchasing a separate backup plan.

Manage the setting from the Windows Backup app

Microsoft also says Windows Backup configuration can be managed from the Windows Backup app. If your edition presents that app in Start or during setup, open it and look for the same app-remembering control. The Settings route is the clearest path when you need to check the switch directly; the app provides another Microsoft interface for the same Windows Backup configuration.

If Remember My Apps is missing or unavailable

Confirm that the account is personal

The most important check is the account type. A work or school account is not supported for this toggle in the consumer Windows Backup experience. If Windows is signed in with an organization-managed identity, switching accounts is not a matter of repairing a damaged installation; the feature is simply not available for that account type. Use a personal Microsoft account for this consumer backup workflow.

Check the exact page and label

Open Settings > Accounts and look for Windows backup. Do not confuse it with unrelated entries such as Family, Sign-in options, or Access work or school. Inside Windows backup, the label is Remember my apps. Windows 11 releases can adjust navigation or wording, so a nearby Windows Backup page or app may be the current presentation of the same controls.

Verify that you are signed in

Remember my apps is tied to an account-backed Windows Backup configuration. If Settings presents a sign-in prompt, finish it before judging the toggle to be unavailable. Use the account you can securely access later; choosing a different account at restoration time will not select the same backup.

Do not assume a build number is required

Microsoft’s published guidance does not state a minimum Windows 11 build or update threshold for this option. Keep Windows 11 current, but do not rely on an invented version number as a diagnostic rule. If the labels differ from the instructions above, follow the current Accounts and Windows Backup wording shown by your installation.

How restoration works on a new PC or after a reinstall

Turning on the switch prepares an app list; restoration happens later during Windows setup. The process is a guided choice, not a promise that every program will be silently reinstalled.

  1. Start Windows setup. On a new computer, proceed through the initial Windows setup. After reinstalling Windows, complete the first-run setup on the freshly installed system.
  2. Sign in with the same personal Microsoft account. Use the account that had Remember my apps enabled on the previous installation. This is the account Windows uses to locate the available backup.
  3. Choose the offered backup. When Windows presents a backup choice, select the one associated with your previous device or installation. If no backup is offered, stop and check the account before continuing with a different setup path.
  4. Review the app pins. Windows presents remembered apps as selectable pins or choices. Select the Store apps you want to restore rather than assuming every item will be installed without confirmation.
  5. Complete setup and handle programs outside the Store. For an app that is not available in Microsoft Store, Windows directs you to the web so you can download its installer. Obtain that program from its legitimate publisher and install it separately.

This flow is why the feature is best understood as an app-list memory aid. It helps you identify what to put back on a clean system while leaving the final installation decision with you.

Microsoft Store apps versus apps obtained elsewhere

App source What Windows can offer during restoration Your follow-up
Microsoft Store The remembered app can appear as a selectable pin during setup. Select the pin for each app you want Windows to restore, then let setup continue.
Not available in Microsoft Store Windows cannot restore it through a Store pin; it directs you to the web for the installer. Download the installer from the software publisher and install the app yourself.
Application data or personal files Not identified as part of the Remember my apps list. Use the application’s own export, sync, or backup process if you need its data and settings.

The table describes different follow-through for app sources, not different Remember my apps switches. One toggle records the list; the source of each program determines what Windows can offer during setup.

What the feature does not restore for you

  • Program data: The documented setting is the list of installed apps, not a copy of each app’s database, preferences, cache, or local files.
  • Every desktop installer: A traditional program that is not available in Microsoft Store may require a separate web download and installation.
  • A complete system image: Remember my apps does not replace an image backup or a dedicated file-backup strategy.
  • A license transfer: An app appearing in the remembered list does not establish that subscriptions, activation keys, or account entitlements have moved to the new device.
  • Guaranteed automatic completion: Windows presents choices and links based on availability; you still decide which apps to install and finish any publisher-specific setup.

These boundaries prevent a common mistake: treating the switch as a clone of the old PC. It is a convenience for rebuilding your software lineup, not a byte-for-byte migration.

Choose the right expectation for your situation

Situation What Remember my apps is useful for What you must arrange separately
Moving from an old personal Windows 11 PC to a new one Provides a starting list of apps during the new-PC setup. Copy personal files and recreate app data, licenses, and settings through their respective services.
Reinstalling Windows on the same hardware Shows which apps were present before the clean installation. Back up files and gather installers or sign-in details before wiping the system.
Using a work or school identity No supported Remember my apps toggle in the consumer Windows Backup flow. Follow your organization’s approved device-management and software-deployment process.
Using a mixture of Store and non-Store software Store apps can appear as selectable pins; the list still reminds you about the rest. Download and install non-Store programs manually when Windows sends you to the web.

Troubleshoot a restoration that does not look right

No backup appears during setup

First verify the identity used during setup. The restoration flow depends on signing in with the same Microsoft account that held the previous backup. If you used another account, return to the account step where possible and sign in with the original personal account. Also confirm that you are in the Windows setup flow where a backup choice is offered; the Remember my apps switch itself is configured before the reinstall or device change.

An expected app is not shown as a Store pin

Check whether the app is available in Microsoft Store. Microsoft’s documented process uses Store pins for Store apps. If the program is distributed elsewhere, Windows may instead direct you to the web for an installer. That outcome is different from losing the remembered list.

The app appears, but its old data is absent

Remember my apps identifies installed apps; it does not claim to restore their application data. Use the individual app’s account synchronization, export, or backup mechanism, and restore your personal files from the backup method you chose before reinstalling Windows.

The wording is different on your Windows 11 installation

Microsoft does not publish a single build number that defines the interface for this setting. Look under Settings > Accounts for the current Windows backup entry, or open the Windows Backup app if your installation exposes that interface. Do not infer that a different label means the feature has changed its purpose; confirm that the control refers to remembering installed apps.

You are using an organization account

Work and school accounts are outside the supported consumer toggle described by Microsoft. If the device belongs to an organization, ask its administrator which approved deployment or backup process applies instead of trying to force this personal-account feature.

Privacy and account choices to make before setup

Because the feature is account-linked, decide which personal Microsoft account should own the backup before enabling it. The practical consequence is continuity: the same account is the key Windows uses to offer the remembered list later. If several people use one computer, make sure the account whose app list you want to preserve is the one configured in Windows Backup.

On a replacement PC, do not skip the account-selection step casually. Finishing setup under a different identity can leave you with a correctly installed Windows system but without the app list you expected to see. You can still install software manually, but the guided restoration depends on the matching account.

Version and availability notes

The instructions apply to Windows 11’s current Windows Backup arrangement, but Microsoft’s cited support material does not specify a minimum build and does not promise identical screen layouts for every release. A future update may move the control or adjust its wording. The durable identifiers are the Accounts category, the Windows backup page or app, and the Remember my apps function.

Microsoft’s guidance also distinguishes this consumer feature from organizational accounts. That distinction is more important than searching for a hidden registry switch or a paid utility: an unsupported account type will not become eligible because another backup product is installed.

Quick verification after enabling it

After switching on Remember my apps, reopen Settings > Accounts > Windows backup and confirm that the control remains on. Record which Microsoft account you used, especially if the PC has multiple accounts. Before a planned reinstall, separately back up documents and any app-specific data you cannot recreate. On the replacement or freshly installed PC, use the same account during setup and treat the offered app pins as a reviewable list rather than an automatic system clone.

Key takeaway

Remember my apps is enabled in Windows 11 through Settings > Accounts > Windows backup. It remembers the installed-app list for a personal Microsoft account and helps you restore Store apps during setup on a new or reinstalled device. Work and school accounts cannot use the consumer toggle, and apps outside Microsoft Store may require a separate web download and installation.
