To stop personalized Windows 11 offers, go to Settings > Privacy & security > Recommendations & offers and turn off Get personalized tips, ads, and recommendations based on my Windows activity. Other suggestions—such as Start’s Recommended section, Settings suggestions, and notification tips—have separate controls, so the right fix depends on where you see them.
Turn off personalized recommendations and offers
- Open Start > Settings > Privacy & security > Recommendations & offers.
- Turn off Get personalized tips, ads, and recommendations based on my Windows activity. Microsoft says this feature can use Windows diagnostic data and information associated with your Microsoft account and activity in other Microsoft products and services to personalize tips, ads, and recommendations. Microsoft’s Windows 11 privacy guidance explains the relevant data and controls.
- If you also want suggestions inside Settings removed, turn off Show me suggested content in the Settings app on the same page. Microsoft’s privacy-settings guidance describes the available privacy controls.
Windows labels and page placement can differ by release. On newer Windows 11 versions, Microsoft uses Recommendations & offers; older instructions may refer to the General privacy page.
Stop Windows tips and welcome notifications
Windows tips and post-update welcome screens are controlled separately from personalized offers:

- Open Start > Settings > System > Notifications.
- Turn off Get tips and suggestions when using Windows.
- To stop the post-update welcome screen, also turn off Show the Windows welcome experience after updates and when signed in to show what’s new and suggested. Microsoft’s notifications guidance covers notification controls.
Identify what is appearing in Start, Settings, or a notification
Not every item labeled “recommended” is a personalized offer. Use its location to choose the control:

If a banner remains, open Settings > System > Notifications and check which app sent it. A browser website notification or an ad from another app may not be controlled by Windows’ personalized-offer setting.
Hide Start’s Recommended section on managed PCs
Microsoft documents the HideRecommendedSection policy for Windows 11 version 22H2 or later on Pro, Enterprise, Education, and IoT Enterprise editions. This is an administrator policy, not a universal consumer-facing switch. If the device is managed or the policy settings are locked, ask its administrator.
An administrator can find the setting in Group Policy at Computer Configuration > Administrative Templates > Start Menu and Taskbar > Remove Recommended section from Start Menu. Microsoft’s Experience Policy CSP also describes controls for consumer experiences and third-party suggestions on managed devices. It notes that users may still see suggestions for Microsoft features, apps, and services, so these policies should not be treated as a complete ad-removal control. Why turning off Advertising ID may not stop ads
Advertising ID is an identifier apps can use to personalize ads. Turning it off does not reduce the number of ads; it may make ads less relevant, and it does not control every ad delivered by other methods. It is separate from the personalized tips, ads, and recommendations switch and from Start’s app-launch tracking, which can personalize Start and help show most-used apps. Microsoft’s privacy guidance distinguishes these controls.

Review device usage choices
Windows device-usage choices—such as gaming, entertainment, school, or business—can influence tailored tips, app suggestions, and offers. To review them, open Settings > Personalization > Device usage and change any selections that no longer fit how you use the PC. Microsoft’s device-usage guidance describes these choices.
