Turning off Windows 11 Network discovery makes your PC harder for other devices on the network to find and can stop automatic discovery of a printer shared from another PC. It does not turn off the printer or remove an installed printer from Windows. A printer connected directly to your PC by USB is a separate case and generally does not rely on network discovery.

What Windows 11’s Network discovery setting changes

Windows does not describe this as a printer-only discovery switch: the relevant setting is Network discovery, which controls whether your PC is discoverable to other devices on the network. Microsoft describes a Public network profile as hiding the PC and making file and printer sharing unavailable. On a trusted Private network, the PC is discoverable and those sharing features are available. Microsoft’s network settings guidance explains the profile distinction.

Turning discovery off can therefore interfere with finding or connecting to a shared printer, especially when Windows would otherwise locate it automatically. It does not, by itself, switch off a printer, uninstall its entry, or establish that printing is broken. A missing listing may also result from sharing configuration, network reachability, driver differences, or other Windows security changes.

Which printers are affected?

Printer setup What disabling Network discovery may mean
Shared from another Windows PC Automatic discovery or connection may fail. The host PC must be reachable, powered on, connected to the network, and configured to share the printer.
Connected directly to the network, including a wireless printer Windows may not find it automatically. Microsoft documents searching for network printers and trying manual setup if the printer is not listed. For wireless setup, the printer and Windows device should be on the same wireless network.
Connected directly to this PC by USB or another local connection This is a local installation path, separate from network discovery. Disabling discovery does not necessarily disable an already installed local printer.

Microsoft’s shared-printer setup instructions cover the host and sharing requirements; its printer installation guidance distinguishes network and local installation.

Why you may not find a shared printer

Discovery is only one part of the connection. A shared printer depends on the host PC’s sharing settings and availability, network access between the PCs, and sometimes credentials for the host. A printer driver mismatch or Windows security change can also cause connection problems. So a printer missing from the automatic list does not necessarily mean the printer itself has failed.

Reconnect to a shared printer

  1. Check the host’s sharing setting. On the PC connected to the printer, open Printer properties > Sharing and confirm that the printer is shared.
  2. Confirm both PCs can reach each other. They should be on the same local network, and the host PC must be on and connected. To check whether the host is reachable, Microsoft suggests entering \ComputerName in File Explorer.
  3. Use discovery and sharing on a trusted network. On the appropriate Private network, make sure Network discovery and File and printer sharing are enabled. Microsoft documents these settings as part of its shared printer troubleshooting steps.
  4. Add the printer manually if it is not listed. On the PC that needs the printer, go to Settings > Bluetooth & devices > Printers & scanners, select Add device, then Add manually, and choose Select a shared printer by name. Enter the share path, such as \ComputerNamePrinterShareName. Microsoft also documents connecting with a host IP address in its printer troubleshooting guidance.
  5. Enter host credentials if prompted. Use an account authorized to access the host PC.

Manual entry can bypass a failed automatic listing, but it cannot make an unreachable host available or correct an unshared printer. If the printer still does not connect, check sharing, network access, and driver compatibility rather than assuming discovery is the only cause.

Choose the right network profile

Windows sets a newly connected network to Public by default. That profile hides the PC from other devices and makes file and printer sharing unavailable. Use Private only for a network you trust, such as your home network; do not change an untrusted public hotspot to Private just to make a printer appear. Microsoft explains the visibility and profile behavior in its network settings guidance. Its file-sharing guidance also warns that enabling network discovery affects whether network devices can see the PC.
