Create the disk before you forget your password: sign in to the protected local Windows account, connect a USB flash drive, open Control Panel, search for create password reset, select Create a password reset disk, and complete the wizard. Microsoft’s procedure applies to Windows 11 and Windows 10, but it works only for local accounts. Microsoft-account passwords are recovered online instead.

What a Windows 11 password reset disk does

A password reset disk is a USB flash drive prepared in advance for one local Windows account. If that account’s password is later forgotten, the disk can be selected from the sign-in screen’s password-reset flow. It is a preparation measure, not a way to create access after you have already been locked out.

The disk is associated with the local account used during its creation. The process must therefore be completed while you can still sign in to that account. Microsoft’s instructions do not describe creating a disk after access has been lost.

Microsoft’s current support instructions cover both Windows 11 and Windows 10. They do not specify a required flash-drive brand, storage capacity, or transfer speed. The only stated hardware requirement is a connected USB flash drive.

Check whether your sign-in is local or a Microsoft account

The account type determines whether the Control Panel wizard is available. Check this before looking for the wizard so you do not try to use the wrong recovery method.

Account used at the Windows sign-in screen Password-reset disk available? Correct recovery route
Local Windows account Yes. Create the disk in advance while signed in to that account. Use Reset password, security questions, or Use a password reset disk from the sign-in screen.
Microsoft account No. Microsoft says the disk-creation option is unavailable. Start Microsoft’s online password-recovery process, verify your identity with an available method, and create a new password.

A local account is maintained on the device. A Microsoft account uses Microsoft’s online identity and password-recovery system. If you are uncertain which type you use, begin with the recovery method shown on the sign-in screen; a missing Create a password reset disk option is also a strong indication that the account is not eligible for this disk.

What to have ready

  • Access to the local account whose password you want to protect.
  • A USB flash drive connected to the Windows 11 device.
  • Enough uninterrupted time to complete the Control Panel wizard.
  • A secure place to store the drive after setup.

Microsoft does not publish a minimum capacity, speed, or approved manufacturer in the cited instructions. You do not need to choose a particular brand on Microsoft’s behalf. Use a drive that Windows can connect to and that you can keep separate from the computer when it is not needed.

How to create the disk in Windows 11

  1. Sign in to the correct account. Sign in to the local Windows account whose password you want to protect. The wizard creates recovery media for that account, so do not perform this step from a different user profile.
  2. Connect the USB flash drive. Insert the drive into the Windows 11 device and wait for Windows to recognize it.
  3. Open Control Panel. Use the taskbar search, type Control Panel, and open the Control Panel app. This procedure uses Control Panel rather than the newer Settings application.
  4. Search for the wizard. In the Control Panel search box, type create password reset. Use that wording rather than searching only for “password,” because the relevant applet is exposed by the longer phrase in Microsoft’s instructions.
  5. Start the creation tool. Select Create a password reset disk from the search results.
  6. Complete the wizard. Follow the remaining on-screen instructions. The wizard prepares the connected USB flash drive for password recovery for the signed-in local account.
  7. Remove and secure the drive. When the wizard finishes, remove the USB flash drive and keep it in a safe place. Do not leave the recovery media plugged into the computer as ordinary storage.

The wizard is the complete creation process described by Microsoft. The instructions do not require you to repeat it every time you change the account password.

Does the disk need to be recreated after a password change?

No. Microsoft says an existing password reset disk does not need to be recreated when the local account’s password changes. Keep the original drive in its secure location; creating another disk after every password update is unnecessary under Microsoft’s instructions.

This does not change the account requirement: the disk remains tied to the local account for which it was prepared. If you want recovery protection for another local account, sign in to that other account and create its own disk while access is available.

How to use the disk after forgetting a local password

At the Windows sign-in screen, begin the normal password-entry process for the local account. Microsoft’s recovery sequence is:

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  1. Select the password-entry option for the account.
  2. Choose OK after entering the password attempt or reaching the password prompt.
  3. Select Reset password.
  4. Answer the security questions configured for that local account, or select Use a password reset disk if a disk was created earlier.
  5. Follow the reset prompts shown by Windows.

The wording of the available choices can depend on what was configured for the account. A disk that was never created cannot be selected retroactively; the preparation has to happen before the password is forgotten.

What to do if the password is already forgotten and no disk exists

Use security questions when Windows offers them

If the local account has configured security questions, the sign-in screen can offer those questions after you select Reset password. Answer them as requested and continue through the reset prompts. This route does not create a disk; it is the immediate recovery option when the questions are available.

Ask an existing administrator to reset the local account

Microsoft says an existing administrator account can reset another local account’s password through Computer Management. Sign in to that administrator account and use the local-account password controls in Computer Management. This option requires an administrator account that is already accessible; it does not help if every administrator credential is unavailable.

Reset the Windows device when no administrator is available

If there is no administrator account available, Microsoft directs users to reset the Windows device. A device reset is a much broader recovery action than using a password reset disk, so treat it as the fallback path rather than an equivalent replacement. Microsoft also states that its support service cannot retrieve or circumvent a lost or forgotten password.

From the Windows sign-in screen, start the account’s password-recovery option, or use Microsoft’s password-reset page. Microsoft’s process asks you to verify your identity through an available recovery method and then create a new password. The recovery method belongs to the Microsoft account, not to a USB device prepared through Control Panel.

If the sign-in screen repeatedly sends you toward online identity verification rather than security questions or a disk option, follow that online route. Switching to the Control Panel wizard will not make a Microsoft account eligible for a reset disk.

Troubleshooting the creation process

The “Create a password reset disk” result is missing

  • Confirm that you are signed in to a local Windows account. Microsoft says the option is unavailable for Microsoft accounts.
  • Open the desktop Control Panel from taskbar search rather than relying on a Settings search.
  • Enter the phrase create password reset in the Control Panel search box.
  • Make sure the USB flash drive is connected before launching the wizard.

If the option remains unavailable after those checks, use the Microsoft-account recovery route if that is the account type shown at sign-in. Do not treat the missing option as evidence that a different flash-drive capacity or brand is required; Microsoft does not state such a requirement.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

The wizard cannot use the flash drive

Check that the drive is physically connected and recognized by Windows, then restart the wizard from Control Panel. The documented procedure requires a connected USB flash drive, but Microsoft’s instructions do not prescribe a particular model, capacity, or speed. If a drive is not recognized, resolve that connection problem before continuing; changing the account password does not substitute for completing the wizard.

You created a disk for the wrong account

Return to the account you intend to protect and repeat the creation process while signed in to that local account. A disk prepared from another profile is not the preparation described for the intended account. Label the drive externally if necessary, but do not write a password on it.

You changed the password and assume the disk is obsolete

Microsoft says the disk does not need to be recreated after a password change. Keep the existing disk secured and available for the same local account.

Storage and security practices

After the wizard reports completion, remove the USB flash drive and store it somewhere safe, as Microsoft instructs. The drive is a credential-recovery tool, so treat its physical location as sensitive even though the creation instructions do not prescribe a special container or storage technology.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  • Keep the drive separate from the computer so it is available if the computer cannot sign in.
  • Use a location you can find later but that unauthorized users cannot casually access.
  • Do not assume that a newly changed password requires a new disk.
  • Remember which local account the disk was created for, especially on a shared Windows device.
  • Do not rely on the disk as a recovery method for a Microsoft account.

These practices address availability and access without adding unsupported hardware requirements. Microsoft’s published procedure does not state a required USB capacity, speed, brand, expiration period, or number of permitted uses.

A practical decision checklist

  1. Identify the account: local account means a reset disk is possible; Microsoft account means online recovery.
  2. Check access: create the disk only while signed in to the local account.
  3. Connect the drive: use a USB flash drive recognized by Windows.
  4. Open the tool: taskbar search for Control Panel, then search its box for create password reset.
  5. Run the wizard: select Create a password reset disk and follow its remaining instructions.
  6. Store it securely: remove the drive when finished.
  7. If locked out later: choose Reset password at sign-in, then use security questions or Use a password reset disk.
  8. If no preparation exists: use an accessible administrator account through Computer Management, or follow Microsoft’s device-reset direction when no administrator is available.

Key limitations to remember

The password reset disk is not a universal Windows recovery key. It is for a local account, must be prepared before the password is lost, and does not replace Microsoft’s online identity-verification process for Microsoft accounts. The published instructions also do not promise that support can recover or bypass a forgotten password; Microsoft explicitly says support cannot do that.

For a Windows 11 local account, the most reliable time to make the disk is immediately after account setup or while you are certain you can still sign in. Once the wizard is complete, removing the drive and storing it safely preserves the preparation without requiring recreation when the password changes.
