To create an album in OneDrive Photos on Windows 11, open the OneDrive cloud icon in the taskbar, choose View photos, select the pictures, choose Add to album, and then choose New album or an existing album. Microsoft’s current desktop instructions do not verify a delete-album command or explain whether removing an album leaves its photos in OneDrive. Do not delete the photo files as a substitute: that removes the files and sends them to recycle bins.

First identify the photo experience you have open

“Photos” can mean three different Windows experiences. The album steps in this guide apply to OneDrive Photos, the photo experience included with the OneDrive app. Microsoft describes OneDrive Photos as available on Windows 10 and Windows 11. The current Windows Photos app is separate, and Photos Legacy is a separate older application. Their organization features are not interchangeable.

Experience How it organizes pictures Album behavior Account or access detail
OneDrive Photos in the OneDrive app Shows photos stored in your OneDrive collection Supports creating albums from selected photos View photos is shown to users signed in with a personal Microsoft account; an organization can block personal OneDrive syncing
New Windows Photos app Organizes content in folders Its current organization model is folders rather than OneDrive Photos albums Can connect to OneDrive, but its folder tools are not the same as OneDrive Photos album tools
Photos Legacy Uses the older Photos experience Retains albums It is a different app from the current Windows Photos app

Microsoft’s support page “Browse and manage your photos on Windows” puts the distinction plainly: “OneDrive includes a photos experience included with the OneDrive app on Windows 10 and Windows 11.” That page and the other Microsoft guidance used here were accessed on October 13, 2026; the pages do not provide publication dates.

Open OneDrive Photos on Windows 11

Use the OneDrive cloud icon

  1. Sign in to the OneDrive app with your personal Microsoft account.
  2. Look at the notification area at the far right of the Windows taskbar. If the icons are collapsed, open the hidden-icons panel.
  3. Select the OneDrive cloud icon.
  4. Select View photos. This opens the OneDrive photo experience rather than the current Windows Photos app.

The View photos entry is intended for personal Microsoft accounts. On a work or school-managed computer, an administrator may block personal OneDrive syncing. In that situation, the command may be unavailable even though OneDrive itself is installed. The limitation is an account or policy issue, not evidence that your pictures have disappeared.

What you need before creating an album

  • Correct app: You should be in OneDrive Photos, reached through the OneDrive cloud icon and View photos.
  • Personal account: The current OneDrive Photos experience supports personal Microsoft accounts. Organization policies can prevent access to personal OneDrive.
  • Photos already available to OneDrive: The items you select must appear in the OneDrive photo view. An image that exists only in another local folder will not become part of a OneDrive album through this workflow.
  • A clear album name: Choose a name that will still make sense when you have several albums. The name is applied when you create the album.

How to create an album in OneDrive Photos

Microsoft’s desktop instructions use a short, three-stage workflow: select pictures, use Add to album, and choose whether to make a new album or use an existing one.

  1. Select the photos. In OneDrive Photos, select each picture you want included. Select only the items intended for this album; album membership is based on the files you choose at this point.
  2. Choose Add to album. With the photos selected, click Add to album. This is the command Microsoft identifies for placing selected pictures into an album.
  3. Choose the destination. Select New album to make a separate collection, or select an existing album to add the selected photos to it.
  4. Name a new album if you created one. Enter the album name when prompted, then finish the creation action shown by the interface.

Microsoft says albums can organize photos for sharing with friends or family. That description concerns the way the pictures are collected for viewing and sharing; it does not turn the album into a separate folder containing copies of the files.

Adding more photos later

To add another group, return to OneDrive Photos, select the additional pictures, choose Add to album, and select the album that already exists. This adds the newly selected items to that album without requiring a second album name. Keep in mind that the command acts on the selected files, so check the selection before confirming.

How to check that creation worked

After creating or updating an album, open the album view shown by OneDrive Photos and confirm that the expected pictures appear. If one is missing, repeat the selection and Add to album process for that file. If the album controls are absent altogether, stop and verify that you opened OneDrive Photos rather than the new Windows Photos app; the two apps expose different organization models.

Why a OneDrive album is not the same as a folder

Microsoft describes a OneDrive album as an aggregated view of individual files, not as a folder that can be moved as one unit. The distinction matters when you are deciding what a change should do:

  • A folder is a file-system location. Moving or deleting a file in a folder is a file operation.
  • An album is a curated view that gathers selected files for organization or sharing.
  • Because an album is not a movable folder, creating one should not be understood as making duplicate photo files.
  • The album concept alone does not establish what happens to the underlying files if an album is removed.

This model is also why instructions for managing folders in the current Windows Photos app cannot be substituted for OneDrive Photos album instructions.

Can you delete a OneDrive Photos album?

Microsoft’s desktop album guidance reviewed for this article documents album creation but does not document a delete-album menu, button, or keyboard action. It also does not confirm whether deleting an album would leave its member photos in OneDrive. That specific behavior is therefore unresolved in the current official material reviewed.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Do not infer a deletion procedure from a control that happens to appear in your own interface, and do not assume that a command labeled Delete applies only to the album. Until the interface or updated Microsoft documentation clearly identifies the action and its effect, treat the album and the underlying photo files as separate things and avoid confirming a destructive operation.

A safe way to investigate the current interface

  1. Confirm the product. Make sure the window is OneDrive Photos opened from the OneDrive cloud icon through View photos, not the new Windows Photos app or Photos Legacy.
  2. Record what is selected. Before using any command, note whether you have selected an album view or individual photo files. A file-selection command can affect the files themselves.
  3. Read the confirmation text. If the interface presents a removal or delete action, do not continue unless the confirmation explicitly states whether it removes only the album view or also deletes the photo files.
  4. Use Microsoft Support for an authoritative answer. Microsoft’s reviewed pages do not settle this question, so consult the current OneDrive Photos help experience or Microsoft Support for a confirmed, version-specific procedure.

This approach avoids presenting an unverified button name as a guaranteed Windows 11 step. Interfaces can change, and account or rollout differences can expose different commands.

Do not delete the photos to remove an album

Deleting a OneDrive media file is a different operation from removing an album view. Microsoft states that deleted OneDrive media files go to the Windows Recycle Bin from the folder they came from and to the OneDrive Recycle Bin. That is deletion of the underlying files, not a documented way to clear an album.

Action you are considering What the official guidance establishes Use it for album removal?
Create an album with Add to album Creates a new album or adds selected photos to an existing album Yes, this is the documented creation workflow
Remove an album The reviewed desktop instructions do not provide a verified command or explain the effect on member photos Do not treat an unconfirmed command as safe
Delete a photo file in OneDrive The file is sent to the Windows Recycle Bin from its folder and to the OneDrive Recycle Bin No; this deletes the file and is not album management

If your actual goal is to delete photographs, make that decision separately and deliberately. If your goal is only to stop seeing a collection, do not select and delete the files while trying to solve an album problem.

Troubleshooting common Windows 11 scenarios

“View photos” is missing

Check that the OneDrive cloud icon is present in the taskbar notification area and that you are signed in with a personal Microsoft account. On a managed device, a policy may block personal OneDrive syncing. If the account is controlled by an organization, contact its administrator rather than repeatedly reinstalling the app.

The Windows Photos app opens, but there are no albums

You may have opened the current Windows Photos app instead of OneDrive Photos. Microsoft says the new Photos app organizes content in folders, while Photos Legacy retains albums. Connecting the Photos app to OneDrive does not change those products into the same album interface. Return to the OneDrive cloud icon and select View photos for the workflow in this article.

You cannot find Add to album

First verify that you selected one or more photos and that you are in OneDrive Photos. The command is part of the documented desktop workflow and appears after photo selection. If you are browsing a folder in the new Windows Photos app, its folder-based controls will not necessarily include OneDrive Photos album commands.

You are unsure whether a removal command deletes files

Stop before confirming it. The reviewed Microsoft desktop instructions do not establish the album-deletion behavior, so the safe answer is not to guess. Read the exact confirmation wording and obtain current guidance from Microsoft Support. A command that sends photos to recycle bins is a file-deletion command, not proof of album-only removal.

A decision checklist before you change anything

  • Am I using OneDrive Photos from OneDrive > View photos, rather than the current Windows Photos app?
  • Am I signed in with a personal Microsoft account, and is personal OneDrive allowed on this computer?
  • Am I trying to organize photos into a view, or am I intentionally deleting the underlying files?
  • For creation, have I selected the intended photos before choosing Add to album?
  • For deletion, does Microsoft’s current guidance explicitly identify an album-only action and explain what happens to the photos?

What is established—and what remains open

The supported Windows 11 workflow is clear for creation: open OneDrive Photos, select pictures, choose Add to album, and select New album or an existing album. The product distinction is also clear: OneDrive Photos albums, the folder-based current Windows Photos app, and Photos Legacy are different experiences.

The unresolved part is removal. The official desktop material reviewed does not verify a delete-album procedure or the fate of member photos after such a deletion. Until Microsoft documents that behavior or the current interface gives an unambiguous, non-destructive confirmation, keep album organization separate from file deletion and do not use the Recycle Bin path as an album-management shortcut.
