You can sometimes get Windows 11 Setup to run on a PC that fails Microsoft’s minimum requirements, but that does not make the installation supported. Microsoft warns that such a device may have compatibility problems, will not receive Microsoft support, and is not guaranteed to receive updates, including security updates. Check which requirement your PC fails and weigh the support and recovery risks before proceeding.
What “incompatible hardware” means
Windows 11 has minimum hardware requirements. A PC that fails one or more checks is ineligible, even if Windows Setup can be made to continue. Microsoft says installation on such a device is not recommended. Its unsupported-device guidance warns that compatibility issues may occur, Microsoft support will not be available for the device, and updates—including security updates—are not guaranteed. Microsoft also says damage caused by incompatibility is not covered under the manufacturer warranty.
Using a USB installer or another installation route does not change eligibility. Microsoft documents installation media as a way to install Windows, not as a waiver of the requirements. The available official guidance does not establish that any particular third-party bypass method will work on every PC or ensure future updates.
Find out exactly which requirement your PC fails
Check eligibility with Microsoft’s PC Health Check app or Windows Update before changing firmware settings, buying parts, or attempting an installation. Microsoft’s Windows 11 requirements include:
#1 Best Overall
- Less chaos, more calm. The refreshed design of Windows 11 enables you to do what you want effortlessly.
- Biometric logins. Encrypted authentication. And, of course, advanced antivirus defenses. Everything you need, plus more, to protect you against the latest cyberthreats.
- Make the most of your screen space with snap layouts, desktops, and seamless redocking.
- Widgets makes staying up-to-date with the content you love and the news you care about, simple.
- Stay in touch with friends and family with Microsoft Teams, which can be seamlessly integrated into your taskbar. (1)
- A compatible 64-bit processor running at 1 GHz or faster, with at least two cores.
- At least 4 GB of RAM and 64 GB of storage.
- UEFI firmware that is Secure Boot capable, and TPM version 2.0.
- DirectX 12 or later graphics with a WDDM 2.0 driver.
- A display at least 9 inches diagonally, with 720p resolution and 8 bits per color channel.
These are minimums, not a promise that every feature will work on every device that barely meets them. Windows 11 Home also requires internet access and a Microsoft account during initial device setup. Upgrading through Windows Update requires Windows 10 version 2004 or later.
Check whether a failure can be addressed
Do not assume that a requirement can be fixed with a generic setting or component. RAM and storage may be upgradeable, depending on the PC. Processor eligibility depends on Microsoft’s supported CPU list; clock speed and core count are properties of the processor, not a firmware toggle. TPM and Secure Boot options vary by model and firmware. Check the PC manufacturer’s documentation for the exact model’s capabilities, upgrade options, and firmware instructions.

Decide whether to proceed
If the PC is ineligible, the central trade-off is not simply whether Setup can finish. It is whether you are willing to use an unsupported system with uncertain compatibility and updates, and whether you have a practical fallback if something goes wrong. Microsoft recommends against installing Windows 11 on hardware that does not meet the requirements.
- If the failed check can be corrected: confirm the fix is supported for your specific model, apply it using the manufacturer’s instructions, and check eligibility again.
- If the PC cannot meet the requirement: understand that proceeding remains unsupported. The reviewed Microsoft guidance does not quantify the chance of failure or guarantee how updates will behave on a particular ineligible PC.
- If you rely on the PC for essential or sensitive work: the lack of guaranteed security updates and support is a material reason not to depend on an unsupported installation.
Choose an installation route—and protect your files
Microsoft documents two broad routes: run Setup from within Windows, or boot from Windows installation media. Neither makes an ineligible device supported. If you use media, a USB flash drive carries the installer; it does not resolve a hardware failure. Microsoft’s cited instructions do not specify a minimum USB capacity.

Run Setup from within Windows
Starting Setup while Windows is running offers choices to keep personal files and apps, keep personal files only, or keep nothing. Review the selected option carefully before continuing. Back up important files first, even when choosing to keep them.
Boot from installation media for a fresh install
A fresh install started by booting from the media wipes the existing Windows installation, files, and installed apps on the drive. Copy anything you need to another location before starting. Microsoft recommends checking the PC’s requirements with PC Health Check before a fresh install.

Know the rollback limit and the Windows 10 context
After an upgrade, Microsoft’s built-in Go back option is available for 10 days. Find it at Settings > System > Recovery. After the files needed for rollback are removed, that built-in option is no longer available. Microsoft recommends returning to Windows 10 if an unsupported Windows 11 installation causes problems.

Under its stated support terms, free Windows Update software updates, technical assistance, and security fixes are no longer provided after that date. Returning to Windows 10 is therefore not the same as returning to a version currently receiving those free support services, and it does not make an unsupported Windows 11 installation safe.
