Windows 11 already performs routine SSD maintenance, so there is no universal switch that makes every NVMe drive faster. Start by checking scheduled optimization, available storage, background activity, and power settings; change advanced NVMe controls only when your device maker or platform documentation supports the change.
How do I optimize an NVMe SSD in Windows 11?
Use this sequence to check Windows’ built-in maintenance and identify whether the slowdown is actually storage-related. Make one change at a time, then check the same workload again; the official guidance does not promise a particular benchmark increase from these steps.
- Check scheduled drive optimization. Open Start, search for Defragment and Optimize Drives, select the system drive, and review its status and schedule. Microsoft says Windows automatically optimizes data drives for the most part. For an SSD, optimization means TRIM: Windows tells the drive which blocks can be cleaned up when the drive is not busy. The default schedule is weekly, and the dialog lets you review or change it. Microsoft’s drive-optimization guidance does not recommend repeatedly running third-party defragmentation tools on an NVMe SSD.
- Check space and storage use. Open Settings > System > Storage. Review what is using space, then use Storage Sense or Cleanup recommendations to remove eligible temporary files or find large, rarely used files and apps. This can relieve storage pressure, but Microsoft does not specify a guaranteed speed gain for deleting any particular amount.
- Check for system bottlenecks. Install available Windows updates, and open Task Manager to inspect Processes, Performance, and Startup apps. Look for sustained activity from apps or background tasks, and consider whether the slowdown coincides with heavy CPU or memory use. Low storage, startup apps, outdated software, malware, or hardware limits can all make a PC feel slow; an NVMe drive cannot remove those bottlenecks. See Microsoft’s Windows 11 performance tips.
- Compare power modes if performance varies on battery. In Settings > System > Power & battery, choose among Best power efficiency, Balanced, and Best performance where available. Test Best performance with the laptop plugged in and compare a repeatable task. It may help when the current power policy constrains the system, but it is not a guaranteed NVMe throughput control. Microsoft warns it uses more power, can drain a laptop battery faster, and may make the device warmer. Microsoft explains Windows power modes.
- Check whether the slowdown is repeatable. Compare the same task when the PC is idle and when it is busy. Note available space and disk activity, and whether the issue happens consistently in the workload that matters to you. If the slowdown persists after routine checks, investigate the specific drive, firmware, cooling, or platform rather than applying a generic tweak.
Should you defragment an SSD?
Do not treat an NVMe SSD like a traditional hard drive and routinely defragment it with a third-party tool. Windows’ Optimize Drives feature handles SSD maintenance through TRIM, while Windows schedules drive optimization weekly by default. Check the built-in schedule and leave it enabled unless you have a specific, well-supported reason to change it. Microsoft describes the behavior in Defragment / optimize your data drives in Windows.
Does Best performance mode make an NVMe SSD faster?
It can change how aggressively Windows manages overall system performance and energy use, but Microsoft does not establish that selecting it directly raises NVMe benchmark throughput. It is most useful as a controlled test if performance seems limited by the current power policy.
#1 Best Overall
- MEET THE NEXT GEN: Consider this a cheat code; Our Samsung 990 PRO Gen4 SSD helps you reach near max performance with lightning-fast speeds; Whether you’re a hardcore gamer or a tech guru, you’ll get power efficiency built for the final boss
- REACH THE NEXT LEVEL: Gen4 steps up with faster transfer speeds and high-performance bandwidth; With a more than 55% improvement in random performance compared to 980 PRO, it’s here for heavy computing and faster loading
- THE FASTEST SSD FROM THE WORLD'S FLASH MEMORY BRAND: The speed you need for any occasion; With read and write speeds up to 7450/6900 MB/s you’ll reach near max performance of PCIe 4.0 powering through for any use

- IT’S A POWER MOVE: Save the power for your performance; Get power efficiency all while experiencing up to 50% improved performance per watt over the 980 PRO; It makes every move more effective with less consumption
| Power mode | What to weigh |
|---|---|
| Best power efficiency | Prioritizes efficiency; useful when battery life matters more than peak responsiveness. |
| Balanced | A middle ground for performance and energy use. |
| Best performance | Prioritizes performance; may use more power, shorten battery runtime, and make a laptop warmer. |
Mode availability and behavior can depend on the PC. Compare the same task under the modes available on your device, ideally while plugged in, and also note battery runtime, temperature, and fan activity. The choice is a whole-system trade-off, not an SSD-specific speed setting.
Why avoid generic NVMe registry edits and powercfg commands?
NVMe power states and PCIe link behavior depend on the drive, platform firmware, Windows version, power scheme, and thermal conditions. Microsoft’s StorNVMe power-management documentation describes interactions involving operational power states, PCIe Active State Power Management (ASPM), maximum operational power, and thermal framework callbacks. A setting that is appropriate for one platform may not apply to another, and trading lower power use for performance can also affect heat and efficiency. Avoid copying registry edits or powercfg commands from generic speed-up guides unless they are documented for your exact hardware and configuration.

Dynamic Link Rate Management (DLRM) is not a universal tweak to turn on manually. Microsoft says it is opt-in through platform firmware and supported by Windows 11 version 24H2, build 26100.2894 or later. It dynamically adjusts PCIe link speed according to I/O workload to improve power efficiency. Whether it is available depends on platform support; see Microsoft’s DLRM documentation.
When should you suspect the drive or hardware?
If Windows maintenance is in place, space is available, and the slowdown remains repeatable when background activity is low, investigate the drive and its operating conditions rather than assuming a Windows setting is at fault. Firmware, platform behavior, and thermal conditions can affect NVMe performance, but the cited Microsoft guidance does not define a universal temperature threshold or benchmark target. Follow the PC or drive manufacturer’s guidance for model-specific diagnostics and firmware. Consider replacement only if diagnosis shows the existing drive is failing or inadequate; hardware changes are not routine optimization steps.
