To arrange multiple displays in Windows 11, open Settings > System > Display, select Identify, and drag the numbered display tiles until they match your monitors’ physical positions. Select Apply, then move the pointer between screens to check the layout. This changes where Windows places each screen; it does not choose whether screens show the same image or extend your desktop.
Arrange the display tiles to match your monitors
-
Connect and turn on the displays, and check that their cables are connected to the PC or dock. Microsoft also recommends checking for Windows updates. See Microsoft’s multiple-monitor guide.
-
Open Start > Settings > System > Display. Windows shows the display rearrangement controls when it detects more than one display.

Choose whether to extend or duplicate the desktop
Display arrangement and display mode do different jobs. The tile layout determines how screens sit next to one another in Windows and where the pointer can cross between them. Display mode determines what Windows shows on the screens. Press Windows key + P to choose a mode:
Recommended Free Tools
| Mode | What appears |
|---|---|
| PC screen only | The desktop appears on the PC screen only. |
| Duplicate | The same image appears on each screen. |
| Extend | The desktop spans multiple screens, providing separate workspace across them. |
| Second screen only | The desktop appears on the second screen only. |
If you want to move windows independently between screens, choose Extend. To show the same image on every screen, choose Duplicate. Microsoft’s multiple-monitor instructions describe these modes and the arrangement controls separately.

Change settings for one monitor
Select a display tile before changing that screen’s scale, resolution, or orientation. Microsoft generally recommends choosing the option marked Recommended for scale and resolution. Using a resolution below a display’s native resolution can make text less sharp or cause the image to appear small, centered, bordered, or stretched. See Microsoft’s resolution and layout guide.
If a display is missing or the layout does not work
A connected display does not appear in Settings
In Settings > System > Display > Multiple displays, select Detect. For the wireless-display path, select Connect. Also check that the display is powered on and connected, and try Microsoft’s external monitor troubleshooting steps.

The pointer crosses at the wrong edge or height
Return to Settings > System > Display, use Identify to verify which tile belongs to each physical screen, then drag the tiles to match the actual side-by-side and vertical positions. Select Apply and test pointer movement again.
You want separate desktop space but see the same image
Press Windows key + P and select Extend. Duplicate mirrors the same image, while arranging the tiles alone does not change the display mode.

Only one external monitor works, or a splitter mirrors the screens
The PC or graphics adapter may not support the number of independent displays you want. A splitter duplicates one video signal; it does not create two independent signals for an extended desktop. Depending on the system, a compatible docking station or USB adapter may provide another video output, but ports and supported display counts vary. Check your PC or graphics-adapter manufacturer’s specifications before choosing hardware. See Microsoft’s external monitor troubleshooting guide.
HDR is unavailable on a duplicated laptop display
For the laptop setup Microsoft describes, HDR is not supported while the external display is in Duplicate mode. Microsoft’s documented option for viewing HDR content on that external HDR display is to switch to Extend these displays. This caveat applies to that HDR setup; it is not a general requirement to use Extend. See Microsoft’s HDR guide.
