If Windows 11’s Mobile Hotspot switch flips back to Off as soon as you turn it on, check the hotspot’s power-saving behavior, then troubleshoot the network adapter and driver. First distinguish that from a different problem: if the switch stays On but connected devices lose internet access, the hotspot is running and the client connection needs separate diagnosis.

Confirm what is turning off

1. Open Settings > Network & internet > Mobile hotspot. Confirm the internet connection selected under the sharing options and whether you are sharing over Wi-Fi or Bluetooth. Turn the hotspot on from this page and watch the switch itself. Microsoft’s Mobile Hotspot setup instructions also describe a Quick Settings toggle.

  2. If the switch returns to Off, continue with the checks below. If it remains On while a phone or other client disconnects or cannot reach the internet, note that distinction: the failure is with client connectivity, not the hotspot toggle.

Check whether Windows is turning off an idle hotspot

Look in the Mobile Hotspot settings for a power-saving option that turns the hotspot off when no devices are connected. If it is enabled and you need the hotspot to remain available while idle, turn that behavior off. The precise control and label may vary, and it may not appear on every Windows build or device; Microsoft Q&A community guidance reports the setting, but it is not a guaranteed control on every PC.

Run Windows’ network troubleshooter

Start with Microsoft’s recommended automated check: open Get Help and run the Network and Internet troubleshooter. Follow any diagnosis or repair steps it offers, then retry Mobile Hotspot from Settings. Microsoft’s Wi-Fi connection troubleshooting guidance describes this starting point.

Inspect the Wi-Fi adapter and its power settings

  1. Open Device Manager and identify the Wi-Fi adapter actually installed in the PC. Check its driver details and available power-management settings; adapter capabilities and menu options vary.

  2. If the adapter’s properties include Allow the computer to turn off this device to save power, test clearing that checkbox, apply the change, and try enabling the hotspot again. The option is not available for every adapter or driver, and disabling it is a diagnostic test rather than a guaranteed fix.

  3. If you consider updating or rolling back the driver, use a driver supported for your specific PC or adapter model. There is no single driver version established as the fix for this symptom. A Microsoft Q&A volunteer moderator recommends checking driver and power-management options for hotspot disconnections; that is community troubleshooting advice, not proof that power management causes every instant shutdown.

Test another hotspot band if a client is involved

If the hotspot starts but fails with a particular device or connection attempt, try another band in the Mobile Hotspot settings, if available—for example, switch from 5 GHz to 2.4 GHz—and test again. One user in a Microsoft Q&A thread reported resolving their issue by changing bands; this is an individual compatibility test, not a universal remedy. If the hotspot toggle itself immediately switches off regardless of client or band, prioritize the power-saving, troubleshooter, and adapter checks instead.

Record the failure before disruptive changes

If the problem persists, record the exact symptom and time before considering a network reset, removing an adapter, or uninstalling its driver. Microsoft’s wireless connectivity troubleshooting guidance recommends capturing baseline and reproduction details before disruptive troubleshooting.
