If Windows 11 displays “Your Windows License Will Expire Soon,” check its activation status before buying anything. The alert can be associated with volume-license activation on an organization-managed PC, so it does not by itself prove that you need to purchase a license. Start at Settings > System > Activation, then follow the status and any error message shown there.
What the warning means
The message is an activation warning, not a diagnosis of the cause. Microsoft notes that it may appear when a volume-license client is installed. On a work or school computer, activation may be managed by the organization, so a retail key or personal purchase may not address the issue.
For a personal PC, the next step depends on what Activation settings say. Windows may need troubleshooting, a valid product key that matches the installed edition, or—if no valid license is available—a digital license.

- Open Start > Settings > System > Activation.
- Read the activation status and any error code or message displayed.
- If Windows offers the Activation troubleshooter, run it. Microsoft identifies the troubleshooter as the first step for Windows 11 activation errors. Microsoft’s Windows activation guidance explains the built-in troubleshooting path.
Pay attention to the message after troubleshooting: Microsoft notes that the error code or text can change after the troubleshooter runs or an activation attempt is made. Use the current message to decide what to do next, rather than assuming the original warning identifies the cause.

Work or school PC, or volume-license/KMS message
Contact your organization’s administrator or IT support. Microsoft says volume-license activation is usually managed by the organization and directs users of KMS-connected devices to organizational support. Ask them to check the device’s activation and connection to the organization’s activation service. Do not buy a personal key on the assumption that it will resolve an organization-managed activation issue.
Personal PC that says Windows is not activated
First check that the installed Windows edition matches the license you own. A key needs to be valid for that edition. If you have a matching valid key, select Change product key on the Activation page and enter the 25-character key. If you do not have a valid license, Microsoft documents buying a Windows digital license through the Microsoft Store.

Troubleshooter displays a different error
Follow the updated error code or message shown in Activation settings. Because troubleshooting or an activation attempt can change the displayed error, do not continue with steps based only on the first warning if Windows now reports something different.

What not to do
- Do not treat the warning alone as proof that a purchase is required; verify the activation status first.
- Do not use a product key unless it is valid for the installed Windows edition.
- Avoid registry edits, third-party activation utilities, and generic repair software as supposed fixes. Microsoft’s guidance for this warning recommends the built-in activation route, not those workarounds.
