Reports published October 15, 2026 say some Xbox-linked Windows games began rejecting sign-in with error 0x87DD0005 after Microsoft released the October 13 updates KB5127648 and KB5127694. Microsoft has not confirmed that either update caused the failures, and neither update’s published known-issues list currently names this Xbox error. Treat the connection as a reported incident, not a confirmed Windows defect.

What changed in the October 13 updates

Update Scope Published information
KB5127648 Windows 11 versions 26H2, 25H2 and 24H2 Builds 26300.9711, 26200.9711 and 26100.9711. The cumulative security update includes fixes for gaming mouse stutter, Windows Hello fingerprint sign-in, Always On VPN, Storage Spaces, printing, Secure Boot and authentication.
KB5127694 .NET Framework 3.5 and 4.8.1 on Windows 11 26H2 A cumulative .NET update. Microsoft says it is not currently aware of issues with this update.

KB5127648 also changes the handling of the BlockNtlmv1SSO setting. When Credential Guard is disabled and the registry value is not set, the update places the setting in Enforce mode. Microsoft warns that this can affect MS-CHAPv2-based Wi-Fi, Ethernet and VPN authentication. That documented change concerns network authentication; it does not establish a connection to Xbox game sign-in.

Which Xbox sign-in failures are being reported?

Windows Report says users reported sign-in rejection in Microsoft Solitaire, Microsoft Mahjong, Gears of War 4 and other games that use Xbox services on Windows. The reported code is 0x87DD0005. In some cases, a user could sign in through a browser or the Xbox app while an individual game still failed. That pattern points to a game-level or service handoff problem, but it does not by itself identify the Windows update as the cause.

Users cited in the reports said that resetting apps, reinstalling games, clearing credentials and restarting the PC did not resolve the problem for them. Those are user experiences, not a controlled test, so they should not be treated as proof that any particular repair always fails or always works.

Is KB5127648 or KB5127694 confirmed to be the cause?

No. The key qualification is that Microsoft has not confirmed that KB5127648 caused the problem. Microsoft’s KB5127648 documentation lists other known issues but not Xbox error 0x87DD0005. The KB5127694 documentation says Microsoft is not currently aware of issues with that .NET update. There is also no published Microsoft acknowledgement of an Xbox outage, universal impact across Windows 11 devices, permanent fix or estimated repair time.

The timing is nevertheless worth checking: both updates were released on October 13, and the reports appeared afterward. Until Microsoft publishes an acknowledgement, hotfix or clearer technical explanation, the safest description is “Xbox sign-in failures reported after the October updates,” not “the updates definitely broke Xbox.”

Check whether the update is installed

  1. Open Settings.
  2. Select Windows Update, then Update history.
  3. Look for KB5127648 and, on Windows 11 26H2, KB5127694.
  4. Open System > About and note the Windows build. KB5127648 corresponds to build 26300.9711 on 26H2, 26200.9711 on 25H2 and 26100.9711 on 24H2.

Record the game name, Windows edition and build, update installation date, and the exact error code. That information helps distinguish a single-game failure from a broader account or service problem.

Troubleshoot 0x87DD0005 in the least invasive order

1. Check Xbox service availability

Before changing Windows settings, check the official Xbox service-status page for an authentication incident. A service outage can produce the same sign-in symptom and requires no local repair.

2. Restart Microsoft Account Sign-in Assistant

A user report cited by Windows Report describes the following workaround. It is anecdotal and is not an officially confirmed Microsoft fix.

  1. Press Windows key + R, type services.msc, and press Enter.
  2. Find Microsoft Account Sign-in Assistant in the Services list.
  3. Open its properties and set Startup type to Automatic.
  4. Select Apply, then use Restart (or stop and start the service if Restart is unavailable).
  5. Close Services, open the Xbox app, and retry the affected game.

Do not assume this procedure will work for every computer; the report does not establish a success rate.

3. Compare the Xbox app with the affected game

If the Xbox app and browser account session work but one game still returns 0x87DD0005, note that distinction rather than repeatedly reinstalling the game. The available reports include users for whom reinstalling did not help. Capture the game title, code and time of failure so support staff can see whether the problem is isolated to that title.

4. Avoid treating a reinstall as a confirmed solution

App resets, credential clearing, restarts and game reinstalls were reported as unsuccessful by some users. They may be reasonable routine steps for a separate installation problem, but there is no evidence here that they repair this suspected post-update authentication issue.

What to monitor next

  • Microsoft’s KB5127648 and KB5127694 pages for a newly added known issue, mitigation or superseding update.
  • Xbox support communications and the service-status page for an authentication outage.
  • Whether the same code appears across several Xbox-linked games or only one title.
  • Whether Microsoft publishes a hotfix or a documented interaction between the October updates and Xbox sign-in.

Until that information appears, keep the error code and update history available when reporting the problem. The current evidence supports a timing-based report, not a definitive attribution to either KB5127648 or KB5127694.
