On Windows 11 Insider builds, the bottom-right desktop watermark is normally a sign that Windows is running a pre-release build—not proof that Windows is unactivated. Microsoft does not document an official setting to hide it while staying on the same installed build. To get rid of it, check your build and channel, then either keep updating through Insider or move to a stable Windows build using a supported route. Some transitions require a clean install.
What the watermark means
Microsoft says a visible lower-right watermark is normal on pre-release Windows Insider builds. It identifies the preview status of the installed build; by itself, it does not establish that Windows has an activation problem. Microsoft’s explanation of Insider Preview builds describes the watermark in that context.
If you also see a separate activation error, treat that as a different issue. The watermark guidance does not diagnose activation problems.
Check which Windows build is installed
Check the installed build before changing Insider settings. A selected channel does not necessarily mean the computer has already installed a build from that channel.

Choose a supported way to make the watermark go away
| Your goal | What to do | What to expect |
|---|---|---|
| Remain on Insider | Keep Windows Update enabled and install the updates offered to your device. | Pre-release builds can show the watermark. It may remain on the currently installed build; Microsoft does not give a universal schedule for its disappearance. Microsoft’s Insider guidance |
| Move to a stable, non-Insider build | Use a supported route from your installed build and channel to a stable release. Back up important files before changing Windows versions. | Whether you can transition without reinstalling depends on the build and channel. Some combinations require a clean installation. Microsoft’s Insider guidance |
| Leave Experimental (Future Platforms) | Back up your files, then perform a clean Windows 11 installation. | Microsoft says Experimental (Future Platforms) does not align to a retail build, so leaving it requires a clean install. Microsoft’s Insider guidance |
Why switching channels may not remove it
Changing the selected Insider channel does not instantly replace the build already installed. In a recent Microsoft Q&A case, a device switched from Experimental to Beta while its existing build remained in place; Beta is also a pre-release channel, where a watermark can be expected. That case illustrates the distinction between the selected channel and installed build, but does not guarantee how every device will behave. Read the Microsoft Q&A response about the channel switch.
Microsoft’s guidance does not promise that a particular channel change, update, or number of days will remove the watermark. The available path depends on build and channel compatibility.

Why registry edits and removal utilities are not the fix
A Microsoft External Staff moderator advises against registry modifications and third-party watermark-removal tools. These approaches do not change the underlying Windows build and may cause other problems. See the moderator’s response.
