Windows 11 hotpatching lets eligible, managed devices install certain monthly security updates without restarting for those updates. It does not remove restarts altogether: devices still need restart-required baseline updates on the planned quarterly cadence, and security exceptions can change the schedule.
What Windows 11 hotpatching does
Microsoft describes hotpatch updates as monthly security updates that install and take effect without requiring a device restart. Hotpatching is an extension of Windows Update deployed through Windows Autopatch; it is not a setting available to every Windows 11 user. Microsoft’s hotpatch update guidance explains the servicing model.
The quarterly baseline update includes cumulative update content and features and requires a restart. The next two monthly security updates are designed to install without one. The standard cumulative update remains the alternative for devices that are not eligible for hotpatching.

Eligibility depends on the license, Windows version, update baseline, and management configuration. Microsoft lists eligible licensing that includes Windows 11 Enterprise E3 or E5, Windows 11 Education A3 or A5, Microsoft 365 F3, Microsoft 365 Business Premium, and Windows 365 Enterprise. The device must run Windows 11 version 24H2 or later, be on the latest baseline, and have an Intune Windows quality update policy with hotpatch enabled. Microsoft’s current prerequisites also include virtualization-based security (VBS) and processor conditions. Check the Windows Autopatch hotpatch FAQ for the current license and device requirements; eligibility details can change.

How the update and restart schedule works
- First month of a quarter: The planned baseline update includes cumulative content and requires a restart.
- Next two months: Planned hotpatch updates deliver monthly security updates without requiring a restart.
- Exceptions: Microsoft may issue an additional baseline outside the planned cycle for security needs. A device that missed the latest baseline may need to install it, and restart, before it can receive a hotpatch. Version upgrades can also affect timing.
These are planned servicing patterns, not a guarantee that every device will receive the same update in the same month. See Microsoft’s hotpatch guidance and Windows release information and calendars for the target version and month.
Hotpatch update versus standard cumulative update
| Update type | Restart required? | What it delivers | Who receives it |
|---|---|---|---|
| Quarterly baseline | Yes | Cumulative update content and features, plus the baseline for subsequent hotpatches | Eligible devices on the planned quarterly schedule, and devices that need to catch up to the latest baseline |
| Monthly hotpatch | No, not for that update | Monthly security updates | Eligible, configured devices in a hotpatch month |
| Standard latest cumulative update | Yes | The regular cumulative update | Devices that do not qualify for hotpatching |
Microsoft says existing update-ring configuration remains in effect for devices receiving the standard cumulative update. For edition lifecycle context, Microsoft lists 36 months of servicing for Windows 11 Enterprise and Education and 24 months for Home and Pro; these lifecycle periods do not establish hotpatch eligibility. See the Windows 11 release information for version-specific lifecycle details.

Why a device may get a regular update instead
If a device does not meet hotpatch requirements, Microsoft offers it the standard latest cumulative update, which requires a restart. Eligibility can fail because of the license, unsupported Windows version, missing latest baseline, or missing Intune hotpatch-enabled policy. Review the current prerequisites and the device’s assigned update policy to identify which condition applies.

Yes. A user or administrator can restart a device whenever needed. Restarting does not remove an installed hotpatch; the device remains on that installed hotpatch KB and OS version. Feature updates on the regular servicing track arrive with the next quarterly cumulative baseline, according to Microsoft’s hotpatch FAQ.

Can IT uninstall or roll back a hotpatch?
Automatic rollback is not supported. Microsoft says an administrator can uninstall a hotpatch, but uninstalling requires a restart. Its guidance for investigating an issue is to uninstall the hotpatch and install the standard cumulative update with a restart. See Microsoft’s hotpatch update guidance for the supported approach.

No. Microsoft’s Windows 11 release information states that hotpatching is not available on version 26H1. Support and the associated KB/build details are version- and date-specific, so check the current release information and hotpatch calendar for the exact Windows version and month before planning deployment.
