Windows 11 does not document a separate auto-completion switch for the Handwriting panel. The verified text-suggestion control is for a physical keyboard: open Settings > Time & language > Typing and enable Show text suggestions when typing on the physical keyboard. The Handwriting panel is a touch-keyboard layout for pen or fingertip input, but Microsoft’s current guidance does not identify an equivalent handwriting-specific completion toggle.

You can still configure the related features correctly by separating four functions: physical-keyboard text suggestions, the Handwriting panel, On-Screen Keyboard (OSK) text prediction, and Windows’ custom inking and typing word list. The steps below show what each setting actually controls and how to test it without confusing one feature for another.

What “auto-completion” means in Windows 11

Microsoft uses the label text suggestions for predictive words that appear while you type on a physical keyboard. Its documented behavior is that words are predicted from your spelling and that more letters produce new, more accurate suggestions. This setting is described specifically for physical-keyboard typing, not for handwriting recognition.

The Handwriting panel is instead an input layout inside the touch keyboard. You write in it with a compatible pen or with your fingertip, and Windows converts the writing into typed text. Microsoft’s current touch-keyboard documentation explains how to open that layout and choose pen or fingertip input, but it does not name a separate “auto-complete handwriting” switch.

That distinction matters: turning on physical-keyboard suggestions may improve typed text in supported fields, but it is not proof that the handwriting panel has predictive completion. Likewise, the OSK’s Use Text Prediction option belongs to the On-Screen Keyboard and should not be presented as a handwriting-panel control.

Enable text suggestions for a physical keyboard

If your goal is predictive words while using the laptop’s or desktop’s hardware keyboard, use this verified Windows 11 path.

  1. Open Start > Settings, or press Windows logo key + I.
  2. Select Time & language, then choose Typing.
  3. Turn on Show text suggestions when typing on the physical keyboard.
  4. If you type in more than one language, turn on Multilingual text suggestions as well.
  5. Open an application with a text field. Microsoft lists a Teams chat, a Word document, and a browser comment field as examples.
  6. Type a few letters and wait for the suggestion pop-up. Select a suggestion with the mouse or touch, or use the arrow keys and press Enter.
  7. Press Esc or click outside the suggestions window to dismiss it.

The wording of the first switch is important. It says “physical keyboard,” so it is the correct setting for hardware-keyboard prediction, not a confirmed setting for handwriting input.

What to expect from the suggestion list

Suggestions are incremental rather than a one-time completion database. Microsoft describes words as being predicted from your spelling; as you enter more letters, new and more accurate suggestions can appear. Give the list a moment after typing, and use the arrow keys and Enter if you prefer not to reach for the mouse. Pressing Esc closes the list without inserting a word.

These suggestions are displayed in an application text field, so a successful test should use a normal editable area. A Teams chat, Word document, or browser comment box makes it easier to tell whether the feature is working than a specialized control that accepts only numbers or commands.

Open and use the Handwriting panel

To write instead of typing, open the Windows touch keyboard and use its layout selector.

  1. Open the touch keyboard from Windows. On devices that show a touch-keyboard button, select that button; if your interface places the control elsewhere, use the touch-keyboard entry provided by your current Windows 11 build.
  2. In the touch keyboard, open the layout selector.
  3. Choose Handwriting panel.
  4. Write in the panel with a compatible pen, or use your finger if fingertip handwriting is enabled.
  5. Send the recognized text to the active application by selecting the appropriate insertion or confirmation control in the panel.

The exact icons and menu placement can change with Windows updates and device hardware. The stable part of the workflow is that Handwriting panel is selected from the touch keyboard’s layout menu; it is not enabled from the physical-keyboard text-suggestion switch.

Hardware and input requirements

The panel requires a Windows device that exposes the touch keyboard and handwriting layout. A compatible touchscreen pen is one supported input method, but a stylus is not mandatory when fingertip handwriting is available. Check compatibility on the device itself: Windows may show different controls for different touchscreen hardware, pen support, or updates.

There is no software purchase associated with these built-in settings. If you already have a supported touchscreen, you can try fingertip input first. A compatible stylus is an optional accessory, not a prerequisite established by Microsoft’s instructions, and buying one will not necessarily make a missing Windows option appear.

Enable fingertip handwriting

A stylus is optional. Microsoft says the Handwriting panel accepts a fingertip, but Windows may require you to enable that input mode first.

  1. Open Settings > Bluetooth & devices > Pen & Windows Ink.
  2. Expand Handwriting.
  3. Select Write with your fingertip.
  4. Return to the touch keyboard, select Handwriting panel, and write with your finger.

If the Pen & Windows Ink page or fingertip option is absent, the available controls may differ for your Windows update, touchscreen, or pen hardware. Do not assume that buying a stylus will add a missing software option; compatibility is device-specific, and fingertip input is supported where Windows exposes the feature.

Is there a handwriting-specific auto-completion switch?

Microsoft’s current guidance reviewed for this configuration does not establish a distinct auto-completion toggle for text entered through the Handwriting panel. You can configure the panel as an input method and configure physical-keyboard suggestions separately, but you should not claim that the latter enables predictive completion for handwriting.

If your Windows build displays an additional handwriting or inking suggestion option, treat it as a version- or device-specific interface and read its description before enabling it. Menu labels can change; the documented, generally applicable control remains the physical-keyboard setting under Time & language > Typing.

Recognition is not the same as completion

When a handwritten word is converted into typed characters, Windows is performing recognition. A predictive completion list would be a separate layer that proposes words before you finish writing. The available Microsoft wording confirms the handwriting layout and its pen or fingertip input, but does not promise that second layer. Therefore, judge the panel first by whether it accurately recognizes and inserts your writing, not by whether a suggestion strip appears.

Handwriting panel, physical suggestions, and OSK prediction compared

Feature Input method Where it is configured Hardware requirement Documented language or scope
Physical-keyboard text suggestions Hardware keyboard Settings > Time & language > Typing; enable Show text suggestions when typing on the physical keyboard Physical keyboard; no pen required Windows text suggestions, with an optional Multilingual text suggestions switch
Handwriting panel Writing in the touch keyboard Touch keyboard layout selector > Handwriting panel Compatible pen or supported fingertip input Handwriting recognition; a separate completion toggle is not established in the cited guidance
Fingertip handwriting Finger in the Handwriting panel Settings > Bluetooth & devices > Pen & Windows Ink > Handwriting > Write with your fingertip Supported touchscreen; no stylus required Uses the Handwriting panel’s recognition
OSK text prediction On-Screen Keyboard Open OSK, then use its Options menu and Use Text Prediction No physical keyboard or pen required Microsoft documents English, French, Italian, German, and Spanish for this OSK prediction setting

The OSK language list applies to OSK prediction as documented. It is not evidence of the languages supported by Handwriting panel recognition or touch-keyboard suggestions.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

How to choose the right input method

Choose the physical-keyboard setting when you want word suggestions while pressing hardware keys. Choose Handwriting panel when the task is writing on a touchscreen with a pen or finger. Choose OSK when you need a virtual keyboard and specifically want its documented text-prediction option. These are parallel tools, not layers that automatically transfer settings to one another.

For a two-in-one laptop, you may use all three at different times. Switching from a keyboard to the Handwriting panel does not carry the physical-keyboard suggestion behavior into handwriting, and opening OSK does not change the touch keyboard’s handwriting recognition. Test each tool in the same text application if you need to compare results.

How to test the configuration without mixing features

Test physical-keyboard suggestions

  1. Leave the Handwriting panel closed and place the cursor in a normal text field, such as a Word document, Teams chat, or browser comment.
  2. Confirm that Show text suggestions when typing on the physical keyboard is on.
  3. Type several words using the hardware keyboard.
  4. When suggestions appear, choose one with the mouse or touch, or move through the choices with the arrow keys and press Enter.
  5. Use Esc to close the suggestion list without selecting an item.

This isolates the physical-keyboard feature. If suggestions appear here, it does not demonstrate that the Handwriting panel will show the same behavior.

Test handwriting input

  1. Open the touch keyboard and select Handwriting panel.
  2. Write a short word with a pen or, where enabled, your fingertip.
  3. Check the recognized text in the active application.
  4. Repeat with a few more letters and words to evaluate recognition quality, rather than assuming that a predictive suggestion list is available.

The useful result of this test is whether handwriting is recognized and inserted correctly. Microsoft’s cited documentation does not promise a separate completion pop-up for this panel.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Test OSK prediction separately

  1. Open the Windows On-Screen Keyboard.
  2. Open its Options dialog.
  3. Enable Use Text Prediction.
  4. Type in the OSK and observe its prediction behavior.

Keep this test separate from the touch keyboard’s Handwriting panel. They are different Windows input tools with different settings.

Custom word list and privacy controls

Windows maintains a custom word list from words you type or write. Microsoft says this list is used to improve typing and inking accuracy. It is separate from the switch that displays physical-keyboard suggestions.

Clear or disable the custom inking and typing word list

  1. Open Settings > Privacy & security.
  2. Select Inking & typing personalization.
  3. Find Custom inking and typing word list.
  4. Turn the control off if you do not want Windows to maintain this custom list.

Microsoft states that turning this control off clears the custom word list. That action changes personalization data; it does not function as an on/off switch for the Handwriting panel itself.

Stop sharing typing and handwriting information to improve services

  1. Open Settings > Privacy & security.
  2. Select Diagnostics & feedback.
  3. Turn off Improve inking and typing.

This diagnostics control is distinct from the custom word-list control. Disabling it addresses Microsoft’s use of typing and handwriting information to improve typing and writing services for all customers; it does not remove the Handwriting panel layout.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Which privacy switch should you use?

Use Custom inking and typing word list when your concern is the locally maintained personalized vocabulary or learned words. Use Improve inking and typing when your concern is sending typing and handwriting information to improve services for all customers. Turning off one does not automatically perform the other action, so review both settings if you want both changes.

Troubleshooting common results

No suggestions appear while using a hardware keyboard

  • Recheck Settings > Time & language > Typing and verify that Show text suggestions when typing on the physical keyboard is enabled.
  • Test in a standard text field such as Word, Teams chat, or a browser comment, because behavior can vary by application field.
  • If you type in several languages, review the Multilingual text suggestions switch.
  • Remember that selecting the Handwriting panel does not turn on physical-keyboard suggestions and vice versa.

Handwriting panel is missing from the touch keyboard

  • Open the touch keyboard’s layout selector rather than the physical-keyboard Typing page.
  • Check whether the current Windows build and device expose the Handwriting panel layout.
  • Because Microsoft notes that menu details can vary with updates and hardware, compare the labels on your device instead of relying on an older screenshot.

Fingertip writing does not work

  • Go to Settings > Bluetooth & devices > Pen & Windows Ink.
  • Expand Handwriting and select Write with your fingertip, if the option is available.
  • Return to the touch keyboard and explicitly choose Handwriting panel.
  • If the setting is unavailable, your touchscreen or Windows configuration may not support that mode; a compatible pen may be required for your device’s supported handwriting workflow.

You expected OSK predictions in handwriting

OSK’s Use Text Prediction option belongs to the On-Screen Keyboard. It should be tested and configured within OSK, not treated as a Handwriting panel setting. Its documented prediction languages—English, French, Italian, German, and Spanish—also should not be generalized to handwriting recognition.

You want to remove learned words

Use Settings > Privacy & security > Inking & typing personalization > Custom inking and typing word list. Turning that control off clears the custom list. Do not use the Improve inking and typing diagnostics control as a substitute; it governs a different privacy choice.

A menu label differs from these steps

Windows can present different icons or menu placement after an update or on different hardware. Look for the function rather than an identical screenshot: the handwriting layout is chosen from the touch keyboard, fingertip input is under the Pen & Windows Ink handwriting options when supported, and physical-keyboard suggestions are under Time & language > Typing. Avoid enabling an option solely because its name contains “inking” or “prediction”; read the full description to identify which input method it controls.

Frequently Asked Questions

Does Windows 11 have auto-completion for the Handwriting panel?

Microsoft documents the Handwriting panel as a pen- or fingertip-based touch-keyboard layout, but does not document a separate auto-completion switch for it. The verified text-suggestion toggle applies to physical-keyboard typing.

Where do I turn on word suggestions for a hardware keyboard?

Go to Settings > Time & language > Typing and enable Show text suggestions when typing on the physical keyboard. Enable Multilingual text suggestions too if you type in multiple languages.

Can I use the Handwriting panel without a stylus?

Yes, where your device exposes the feature. Go to Settings > Bluetooth & devices > Pen & Windows Ink > Handwriting and select Write with your fingertip, then choose Handwriting panel from the touch keyboard layout selector.

Is OSK Use Text Prediction the same as handwriting completion?

No. Use Text Prediction is an On-Screen Keyboard option. Microsoft documents English, French, Italian, German, and Spanish for that OSK prediction setting; those languages should not be assumed for handwriting recognition.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

How do I clear words Windows learned from my typing or handwriting?

Open Settings > Privacy & security > Inking & typing personalization and turn off Custom inking and typing word list. Microsoft says disabling that control clears the custom list.

How do I stop Windows using typing and handwriting information to improve services?

Open Settings > Privacy & security > Diagnostics & feedback and turn off Improve inking and typing. This is separate from clearing the custom word list.

Why do physical-keyboard suggestions work but not appear in handwriting?

The suggestion switch is explicitly for the physical keyboard. Handwriting recognition is a different touch-keyboard layout, and Microsoft does not promise that the physical-keyboard suggestion behavior carries over to it.

Do I need to buy a particular pen?

No purchase is established as necessary. A compatible pen is optional because the panel can accept a fingertip where supported. If you choose a stylus, verify compatibility with your touchscreen; buying one does not guarantee that an unavailable Windows option will appear.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

The Bottom Line

For hardware-keyboard predictions, enable Show text suggestions when typing on the physical keyboard under Settings > Time & language > Typing. For handwriting, open the touch keyboard’s layout selector and choose Handwriting panel; enable Write with your fingertip under Pen & Windows Ink > Handwriting when supported. Windows 11 does not currently document a separate handwriting-panel auto-completion switch, and OSK prediction plus the two inking privacy controls are separate features.
