If Windows 11 Find My Device can’t locate your missing laptop, first check the Microsoft account and setup conditions, then try Find and Lock from the device page. A map pin is not guaranteed to be live or precise. If theft is possible, report it and secure your accounts; if it’s a work or school laptop, contact your organization’s IT team.
Check whether Find My Device can locate this laptop
Find My Device must have been enabled before the laptop went missing. Microsoft says the feature requires Windows to be signed in with a personal Microsoft account, an administrator account, and device location enabled. If it was not set up beforehand, these steps cannot turn it on remotely.
Use a phone or another computer to visit account.microsoft.com/devices. Sign in with the personal Microsoft account used on the missing laptop. If you have more than one account, check each one that might have been used to sign in to Windows.

Select the laptop in the device list and open Find My Device. A device appearing in the list does not guarantee that a location will be available; device-list visibility and eligibility for a usable location are not the same thing. Microsoft says Windows 11 devices generally appear in the account device list after sign-in. Under the circumstances described in its device-management guidance, a device may take up to 24 hours to appear; that is not a promise that its location will update within that time. Request a location and lock the laptop if available
- On the device page, choose Find My Device.
- Select the missing laptop and choose Find to request its location.
- If the page offers Lock, follow the on-screen instructions to lock the device remotely.
Microsoft says the person using the laptop receives a notification when you attempt to locate it. Do not treat that notification or a successful map result as proof that you have recovered the device.
What an unavailable, broad, or old map result means
Windows location can draw on GPS, nearby wireless access points and routers, cell towers, an IP address, or a default location. Which signals are available depends on the laptop and circumstances, so location accuracy varies. Microsoft also describes cloud-saved last-known location when a feature accesses location. A displayed pin may therefore be old or approximate rather than a current, precise position. (Microsoft: Windows location service and privacy)

If no location appears, check the likely causes without assuming any one is confirmed:
- Find My Device, location, or an administrator account requirement may not have been set up before the loss.
- You may be signed in to a different Microsoft account from the one used on the laptop.
- The laptop may not appear in that account’s device list, or location data may not be available.
Microsoft’s documentation does not promise a location update in every case or provide a complete diagnosis for every missing result. If the laptop is managed by a school or employer, organization policy may affect what you can do from a personal account.

For a work or school laptop, contact IT
A company- or school-managed laptop may be controlled by the organization and cannot be registered to a personal Microsoft account. Contact the organization’s IT department or security team promptly and follow its lost-device reporting process. The personal-account Find My Device steps are not a substitute for the organization’s device-management procedures. (Microsoft: Manage devices used with your Microsoft account)
If theft is possible, report it and protect your accounts
Microsoft recommends reporting a stolen device to local law enforcement and your insurer. To find the laptop’s serial number, open its listing in your Microsoft account and look under Info and support. If Lock is available, use it. Separately review your Microsoft account and any other accounts that may have been signed in on the laptop, and take appropriate steps to protect them. Know what BitLocker can—and cannot—do
BitLocker encrypts data to help protect files if a laptop is lost or stolen; it does not locate the hardware. Its recovery key is a 48-digit number that may be stored in a personal Microsoft account, a work or school account, printed, or saved to a USB drive, depending on setup. Microsoft Support cannot retrieve or recreate a lost recovery key. (Microsoft: Find your BitLocker recovery key)
