Windows 11 does not have a documented, built-in Family Safety widget for the Widgets board. To reach family settings from the desktop, open Windows Security and select Family options. You can also manage settings in the Microsoft Family Safety app or on the Microsoft family account website.

Is there a Family Safety widget in Windows 11?

Microsoft describes Windows Widgets as a customizable board of cards that users can add, remove, move, resize, and customize. Its Windows Widgets guidance does not identify Family Safety as a built-in widget. The board is designed for quick information and actions, not as a replacement for full apps; privacy settings depend on the service powering each widget. See Microsoft’s Widgets guidance.

That distinction matters: Family Safety is a separate set of family-account controls, not a card you should expect to add to the Widgets board. Microsoft documents three practical routes to those controls.

Set up a family group and connect a child’s Windows device

Family Safety controls depend on family-group membership and connected devices. An organizer manages the group, including adding or removing members and managing limits and permissions. Microsoft’s roles and permissions guidance explains the distinction between organizers and members.

  1. Create or open the family group: use the Microsoft family account website and follow Microsoft’s setup instructions.
  2. Add family members and assign roles: make sure the adult who will manage settings is an organizer and add the child as a member.
  3. Connect the child’s Windows device: in Windows Settings, open Accounts, go to the family section, and allow the child to sign in. The device should appear among connected devices after the child signs in. Windows labels can differ by build; use the current Settings labels if the route is worded differently. Follow Microsoft’s device-connection instructions.
  4. Keep the child’s Windows account as a standard user: Microsoft cautions that Family Safety features may not work properly if the child’s account is an administrator.
  5. Choose controls and reporting: use the Family Safety app or family account website to configure the limits and restrictions you need.

What Family Safety can manage

Device screen time

Family Safety offers screen-time controls for connected devices. These are distinct from limits on a particular app or game: a device-wide limit concerns time on the device, while an app or game limit concerns use of selected apps or games.

App and game limits

Microsoft says app and game limits can span connected Windows, Xbox, and Android devices. Limits can be scheduled by day. See Microsoft’s instructions for setting app and game limits.

Website restrictions and activity reports

Website time limits do not work like app and game limits. Use the documented website-blocking controls for site restrictions rather than assuming that an app-style time allowance will limit time on a website. Web and search reporting is also conditional: Microsoft says it applies to supported browser use, and activity reporting must be enabled.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Activity reports can include web and search activity, app and game use, and screen time. Organizers can enable or disable reporting and view reports; the relevant devices must be connected. Microsoft explains the conditions in its activity-reporting guidance.

Why controls or reports may not appear

  • The device is not connected to the family group: do not assume limits or reports will apply to an unconnected device.
  • The child account is an administrator: change it to a standard user if Family Safety features are not working as expected.
  • Reporting is off: organizers must enable activity reporting for reports to be available.
  • The browser is unsupported for web reporting: web and search activity is reported only for supported browser use.
  • You expected a widget: Family options is an access point in Windows Security, not a documented Family Safety card for the Widgets board.
