For most Windows 11 PCs, use Windows Update first. It is Microsoft’s normal, automatic route for recommended driver updates and the company calls it the best way to get drivers for most hardware. Use the exact computer or component manufacturer’s official support site when Windows Update cannot find a needed driver, the device still has a specific problem, or the manufacturer provides a model-specific package that you have a clear reason to install.
Do not choose solely by the newest date shown on a download page. Driver dates are provider-supplied descriptive information, and Windows ranks packages using targeting and other rules. A newer optional package is not automatically a better choice than an older package that Windows has classified as appropriate for your hardware.
The short decision: which source should you use?
The right source depends on the device’s condition, the exact hardware, the Windows version, and whether the update is recommended or optional. Use this order of preference:
| Situation | Best first step | Why |
|---|---|---|
| Windows 11 is working normally and you are doing routine maintenance | Windows Update | Recommended drivers can be installed automatically, and Microsoft identifies Windows Update as the preferred route for most hardware. |
| An optional driver appears in Windows Update | Read its details and install it only if it addresses a real need | Optional drivers are not installed automatically and are not required for every PC. |
| A device has no driver, has an error, or Windows Update cannot update it | The exact computer or component manufacturer’s official support page | Microsoft directs users to the manufacturer for a compatible driver or additional support when Windows Update cannot provide one. |
| The device is a Surface or another Microsoft-branded product | Microsoft’s support page for that exact model | Microsoft specifically recommends its own model-specific drivers for these devices. |
| The PC is managed by an employer or school | Follow the organization’s driver policy | Administrators may approve, defer, or deploy drivers centrally; home-PC advice does not override that policy. |
This is a channel decision, not a contest in which one source always wins. A manufacturer package can be the correct solution for a particular machine, while Windows Update remains the sensible default for another machine using similar-looking hardware.

What Windows Update actually provides
Recommended drivers are the default path
Windows Update identifies hardware and Windows-version combinations and offers driver packages that Microsoft has approved for distribution to matching systems. Recommended driver updates may install automatically when automatic updates are enabled. Microsoft Support states: “The best way to get driver updates in Windows is automatically using Windows Update.” That guidance is aimed at ordinary Windows users who need a reliable maintenance method, not at every specialist deployment scenario.
Windows Update also avoids making you guess which package fits an unknown device. It uses the system’s hardware identity and targeting information rather than asking you to select a broad package from a list. That reduces the risk of installing a driver intended for a different revision, operating system edition, or computer model.
How to check for normal driver updates
- Open Start and select Settings.
- Choose Windows Update.
- Select Check for updates.
- Install the available updates, then restart when Windows requests it. A restart may be required before the new driver is active.
The exact wording can change between Windows 11 releases, but the Windows Update page remains the starting point. If you have paused updates, metered the connection, or have pending restarts, resolve those conditions before deciding that Windows Update has no driver available.

When to use Optional driver updates
Where to find them
Optional drivers are deliberately separated from normal automatic updates. Open Settings > Windows Update > Advanced options > Optional updates. Expand the Driver updates section if it is present, select a package, and choose Download and install. Restart after installation if Windows asks you to do so.

Microsoft’s explicit warning is simple: “Optional drivers aren’t installed automatically.” Their presence does not mean that every user should install every listed item. An optional package may address a particular compatibility issue, add support for a hardware revision, or be offered for testing before it becomes broadly recommended.
A practical test before selecting one
- Identify the problem: Are you trying to fix a device error, missing feature, intermittent connection, or known compatibility issue?
- Check the device name: Make sure the listed driver corresponds to the affected device, not merely to a similarly named component.
- Read the release information: Look for a stated fix or compatibility change that matches your symptom.
- Consider timing: If the PC is stable and the optional update has no relevant change, leaving it uninstalled is reasonable.
- Plan a restart: Driver changes often do not take effect completely until Windows restarts.
Do not treat the date beside an optional driver as proof that it is superior. Windows may rank another package more highly because it is classified as critical or automatic for your hardware.
When the manufacturer’s official site is the better choice
A missing or malfunctioning device
Use the manufacturer’s official support site when Windows Update cannot find a driver, reports that no compatible driver is available, or the device continues to malfunction after normal updates. This is particularly important when the device is not recognized, has a warning icon, or needs a model-specific control panel or firmware-linked package that Windows Update does not provide.

For a laptop or prebuilt desktop, start with the computer maker’s support page for the exact model. For a separately installed graphics, network, audio, storage, or expansion device, use the component maker’s official support page. The source must match the hardware that is actually installed, not merely the brand of the computer.

Find the exact model before downloading
- Open Settings > System > About and record the device name, model, and Windows edition.
- For more detail, press Windows key + R, enter
msinfo32, and note the System Model and System Type. - If the issue concerns an add-in component, identify that component separately from the computer model. The computer manufacturer’s page may not carry the newest or correct package for a component that was installed later.
- On the manufacturer’s support page, select the exact model and Windows 11 version or architecture requested by the site.
- Read the package description and release notes before downloading. Confirm that the package is for the affected device and that it is intended for Windows 11.
Microsoft Support advises users to avoid driver downloads from sites other than the manufacturer’s official site. Search-result pages, driver-aggregation services, and unsolicited “driver updater” programs can offer mismatched or modified packages and make it difficult to verify what was installed.
Why the manufacturer may show a newer date
A manufacturer’s page may display a package dated later than the driver listed by Windows Update. That difference alone does not establish that the manufacturer package is newer in the sense that matters to your installation, safer, or more stable.
Microsoft’s driver guidance explains that the date shown with a driver is provider-set descriptive information. Windows also uses targeting data and ranking rules to select a package for a particular hardware and Windows combination. The displayed date can therefore differ from the package’s actual release context, and a package with a later-looking date may be optional or targeted to a different configuration.

How Windows chooses between driver packages
Windows does more than sort drivers by calendar date. Its selection process matches the package to the hardware and Windows environment, then applies ranking and distribution status. Microsoft’s technical documentation describes cases in which a critical or automatic package can outrank a newer optional package.
That explains several common situations:
- A driver in Optional updates can have a later displayed date but not replace the currently installed recommended driver.
- A manufacturer package can be available for download while Windows Update continues to offer a different package chosen for broad compatibility.
- A package written for a related hardware revision may be rejected even when the model names look similar.
- The driver date shown in Windows should not be used as a standalone quality or recency score.
The practical rule is to prioritize hardware identity, Windows-version compatibility, distribution status, and the stated fix. Date is only supporting information.
A safe workflow for installing a manufacturer driver
When the official manufacturer route is justified, use a controlled process rather than installing several packages at once.
- Record the current state. Note the device name, current driver version, and the symptom you are trying to resolve. A screenshot of the relevant entry can help if you need to undo the change.
- Confirm the source. Navigate to the manufacturer’s official support domain yourself and select the exact model. Do not use a download mirror or a generic “latest driver” utility.
- Verify compatibility. Check the listed Windows 11 version, system type, device family, and any prerequisites. A package for another Windows edition or model is not interchangeable merely because it installs.
- Read release notes. Confirm that the package fixes or supports the behavior you care about. If the notes do not identify a relevant change and Windows Update is already working, the replacement may not be necessary.
- Create a recovery point when appropriate. For a functioning system, a restore point or current backup gives you a way back if the installation causes instability. Availability of restore points depends on your Windows configuration.
- Install one driver at a time. Close applications, run the manufacturer’s installer, and follow its prompts. Avoid changing several unrelated drivers simultaneously because that makes a failure harder to diagnose.
- Restart and test the original symptom. Test the specific device function that prompted the installation, not just whether Windows starts.
- Keep the previous package available. If the problem began after installation, use the manufacturer’s documented rollback method or Windows’ device-driver rollback option when available, then restart and retest.
Do not interrupt an installer that is updating a device firmware component, and do not power off the PC during a process that explicitly warns against interruption.

What to do when a driver update causes a problem
If the problem starts immediately after Windows Update
- Restart once if Windows has not yet restarted after the update.
- Check Settings > Windows Update > Update history to identify the installed package.
- If the affected device has a rollback option in its properties, return to the previous driver and restart.
- Report the symptom through the normal Windows or manufacturer support channel rather than installing an unrelated third-party package.
If the manufacturer package fails to install
- Recheck the exact model and Windows 11 compatibility.
- Confirm that the package is for the device you are actually trying to update.
- Look for a prerequisite package or an instruction to install through the manufacturer’s support utility, if the official documentation requires it.
- Do not force installation of a package intended for a different model simply because the installer can be bypassed.
If the device is still missing
Return to the manufacturer’s support page using the exact model information. If no compatible package is listed, contact the manufacturer or your organization’s support team. A generic driver chosen by name may make the device appear in Windows while removing model-specific functionality, so “any driver that installs” is not a reliable recovery strategy.
Special cases
Surface and other Microsoft-branded devices
Microsoft says it builds the drivers for Surface and Microsoft-branded devices and recommends following the support route for the exact model. Use the model-specific Microsoft support instructions rather than assuming that a generic Windows Update package contains every device-specific component.
Work- and school-managed PCs
On a managed PC, the organization may control which drivers are approved, deferred, or deployed. Do not bypass that process with a manual manufacturer download unless your administrator tells you to. Microsoft’s Windows Autopatch guidance recommends Automatic mode for standard original-equipment-manufacturer devices that have not recently experienced driver or hardware problems caused by Windows Updates. Administrators can review other and optional drivers when a different deployment decision is needed. This is managed-device guidance, not a blanket instruction for home computers.
Common mistakes to avoid
- Installing every optional driver: Optional means deliberate selection is required; it does not mean every package is necessary.
- Choosing by date alone: Provider-set dates and Windows ranking make a later-looking date an unreliable quality test.
- Replacing a working driver without a reason: A stable recommended driver does not need to be swapped merely because a manufacturer page lists another package.
- Using a generic package for a model-specific device: Laptop and prebuilt systems may need customized power, audio, hotkey, camera, or firmware integration.
- Using third-party driver sites: Microsoft Support says to avoid sites other than the manufacturer’s official site.
- Assuming Device Manager always finds the newest driver: Its automatic search is not a universal substitute for Windows Update or the manufacturer’s model-specific support page.
- Ignoring the Windows version: A package for another Windows release or system type may not be compatible even when the hardware name matches.
- Updating several devices at once: One-at-a-time changes preserve a clear troubleshooting path.
A practical decision checklist
Before downloading anything, answer these questions:
- Is the PC operating normally? If yes, start with Windows Update and leave automatic updates enabled.
- Is the driver listed under Optional updates? Install it only when its description matches a concrete need.
- Is the device missing, malfunctioning, or unsupported by Windows Update? Identify the exact model and use the official manufacturer site.
- Is the device Surface or another Microsoft-branded product? Use Microsoft’s support page for that model.
- Is the computer managed by an employer or school? Follow the administrator’s policy.
- Does the package match the hardware and Windows version? If you cannot verify both, do not install it.
- Are you relying only on a newer displayed date? Reassess; date alone is not enough.
- Can you recover if the update fails? Record the current driver and make a backup or restore point when appropriate.
What Microsoft’s guidance establishes—and what it does not
Microsoft’s Windows 11 support guidance establishes Windows Update as the normal route for most users, explains that optional drivers require manual selection, and directs users to the manufacturer when Windows Update cannot provide a needed driver. Its driver-distribution documentation explains that provider-set dates and Windows targeting and ranking affect selection. Microsoft’s “Understanding driver updates” guidance was originally published October 20, 2025, and its driver-distribution rules page was last updated September 20, 2024.
Those documents do not establish that manufacturer drivers are always newer, safer, or better, nor that every optional update should be installed. They also cannot identify the correct package for a PC without its model, hardware identity, Windows version, current driver, and symptom.
