For Windows 11 system-file repair, run DISM first in an administrator Command Prompt, then run System File Checker (SFC). DISM repairs the Windows image that provides repair files; SFC checks protected system files and replaces damaged files when possible. These commands address image and system-file problems, not every cause of a Windows issue.
Before you run DISM and SFC
Install the latest Windows updates and restart, as Microsoft’s SFC guidance recommends. Save your work, then open an elevated Command Prompt: search for Command Prompt, select Run as administrator, and approve the User Account Control prompt. Administrator access is required.
Enter the commands exactly as shown, including spaces. Keep the Command Prompt window open while each command runs.
Run DISM first, then SFC

At the administrator Command Prompt, run:
DISM.exe /Online /Cleanup-image /RestorehealthThis services the currently running Windows image. By default, DISM gets the files it needs through Windows Update. Wait for the operation to finish; it may take several minutes.

After DISM reports successful completion, run:
sfc /scannowSFC scans protected system files and can replace damaged files with cached copies. Leave the window open until verification reaches 100%, then read the final Windows Resource Protection message.
Microsoft’s documented sequence puts DISM before SFC: repairing the image first gives SFC a repaired source from which to obtain files.

If DISM cannot get repair files
If the Windows Update client is broken, Microsoft’s repair guidance describes using a suitable alternate source, such as a running Windows installation or a Windows side-by-side folder on network share or removable media.

DISM.exe /Online /Cleanup-Image /RestoreHealth /Source:C:RepairSourceWindows /LimitAccessC:RepairSourceWindows is an example placeholder, not a universal folder. Replace it with the actual location of suitable Windows repair files. The command limits DISM from using Windows Update; arbitrary installation media or an unrelated folder is not guaranteed to work. Consult Microsoft’s Windows image repair instructions for source requirements.

Understand the SFC result and choose what to do next
| SFC message | What it means | Next step |

| Windows Resource Protection did not find any integrity violations. | SFC found no missing or corrupted protected system files. | Retry the task that led you to run the scan. If the problem remains, investigate other possible causes; a clean SFC scan does not rule them out. |

Find SFC details in the CBS log
To extract SFC entries from the CBS log to a text file on your desktop, run this command in an administrator Command Prompt:
findstr /c:"[SR]" %windir%LogsCBSCBS.log >"%userprofile%Desktopsfcdetails.txt"Open sfcdetails.txt and use the dates and times in its entries to identify the latest scan; the file can include entries from earlier SFC runs. Microsoft’s SFC instructions describe the log and the result messages.

If the original problem was Windows Update
After completing the repair sequence, try Windows Update again. If it still fails, use Microsoft’s Windows Update troubleshooting guidance for other diagnostic steps. DISM and SFC target the Windows image and protected system files; they do not guarantee a fix for every update failure or other Windows problem.
