If Windows 11 is showing “Repairing disk errors. This might take over an hour to complete,” first check whether the screen or progress indicator is changing. If it is, let the check continue; the message is not a one-hour deadline. If Windows keeps returning to the same screen, use Windows Recovery Environment (WinRE) and Startup Repair, then check the drive with your PC maker’s diagnostic tool if repair does not work. The message alone does not prove the drive has failed, but protect important files if you suspect a drive problem.
What the repair message means—and what it does not
Windows is attempting a disk check or repair during startup. A hard shutdown can precede this screen, but that timing does not prove the shutdown caused disk corruption. Nor does the message establish that the storage device has failed. A Windows 11 troubleshooting guide associates the screen with CHKDSK, but the message alone does not confirm exactly which operation is running on every PC. The words “might take over an hour” are not a guaranteed completion estimate. There is no reliable universal time limit for deciding that the process is frozen. Look for changes in the screen or progress indicator rather than relying on the elapsed time alone.

- If progress is changing: Leave the PC powered on and allow the check to finish. Avoid cycling power while a disk operation appears to be underway.
- If it has not changed for a prolonged period: Plan a recovery attempt, but do not assume the operation is frozen just because it has taken longer than an hour. The available guidance does not establish a safe, universal waiting threshold.
- If the data matters and a drive problem is possible: Avoid repeated repair attempts until you have considered how to protect the files. CHKDSK repair may involve data loss where sectors are bad, as noted in an older Microsoft Q&A discussion.
Try Startup Repair from Windows Recovery Environment
If Windows repeatedly returns to the same repair screen, try the recovery tools. If the built-in WinRE opens, use this path:

- Open Troubleshoot.
- Select Advanced options.
- Choose Startup Repair and follow the prompts.
If Windows does not reach WinRE, a Microsoft External Staff moderator described another route in a Windows 10 case: create Windows installation media on a working PC, boot the affected PC from it, choose Repair your computer rather than Install now, then try Startup Repair. This is a possible recovery path, not a guaranteed Windows 11 procedure. The boot key or firmware steps vary by PC model; follow the computer maker’s instructions to start from the media. Do not rely on repeated forced shutdowns as a guaranteed way to open WinRE. A Microsoft Q&A user reported that forced restarts did not bring it up, and interrupting disk activity may add risk.

If Startup Repair does not resolve the loop
Use the storage diagnostic built into your computer or provided by its manufacturer. The diagnostic result helps distinguish a possible hardware fault from a startup-repair problem. Microsoft’s moderator recommends running the manufacturer’s storage diagnostics if Startup Repair cannot resolve the issue; examples include Dell F12 Diagnostics or the equivalent tool for another PC maker. - If the diagnostic reports a drive problem: Prioritize protecting the data and contact the PC manufacturer or a repair professional. The right replacement depends on the computer and storage hardware.
- If the diagnostic does not report a problem but the loop continues: Record the result and seek device-specific support rather than assuming the screen identifies the cause.
Protect your files before more repair work
If Windows starts, copy important files to a separate device before trying further repairs. If Windows will not boot and the files are important, seek a recovery or backup approach suited to the drive’s condition. Do not assume a repair operation will preserve every file; advice about copying files from recovery in a third-party guide is not a universal, verified procedure for every Windows 11 PC.

A universal command sequence cannot be established for this loop. In particular, do not automatically run chkdsk C: /f /r: drive letters can differ in recovery, and repair can carry data risks. An older Microsoft Q&A discussion warns about possible loss involving bad sectors, while another Q&A response is explicitly labeled AI-generated and may be incorrect. The older discussion and the AI-labeled response are not a basis for applying that command to every PC.
What information to have ready if you need help
If the repair loop persists, collect the PC make and model, the exact screen text, whether progress changes, what happened before the forced shutdown, which recovery steps you tried, and any manufacturer diagnostic result. That information helps support staff choose steps for your specific device without assuming that the drive has failed.
