If Windows 11 keeps opening links in a browser you did not choose, first check whether the default association actually changed. A work or school policy may reapply settings, S mode keeps Edge as the default, and some Windows features open Edge independently of your normal browser choice. Microsoft’s documentation does not establish that Windows updates routinely reset everyone’s default browser.
First, confirm what changed
- Open Settings > Apps > Default apps and select your preferred browser. Review the file types and link types assigned to it. Windows lets you set defaults for an app or choose a preferred app for individual associations. Microsoft explains how to change default apps.
- Test a regular web link and, if relevant, a browser-related file type. If only one opens in the unexpected browser, that does not mean every association changed.
- Notice where the link came from. A link opened from Windows Search, a widget, or an app that relies on Edge may launch Edge even while your ordinary browser associations remain intact.
Why does my default browser keep changing back?
A work or school policy may be reapplied
Organizations can configure default associations on managed Windows devices using Group Policy or mobile device management (MDM). Microsoft notes that users can still change the default browser when these methods are used, so the presence of management policy alone does not prove it caused a repeated change. If the device belongs to your employer or school, ask IT to check the effective policy and whether it is being reapplied. Microsoft documents default-browser deployment options for Edge.
Windows 11 S mode keeps Edge as the default
Microsoft says Edge is always the default browser on a device running Windows 11 in S mode. Setting another default requires switching out of S mode, and that switch is permanent: the device cannot return to S mode afterward. This is an S mode restriction, not evidence of a recurring reset bug. See Microsoft’s S mode FAQ.

Windows Search web results open in Edge, and some Windows apps and widgets depend on Edge. If Edge appears only when you use one of those features, check your default-app assignments separately before concluding that Windows reset them. Microsoft describes Edge use in Windows features.

An update is not an established universal cause
The cited Microsoft documentation explains how to change browser defaults and how organizations can configure them; it does not establish that Windows updates routinely reset everyone’s browser. Check the affected association, device management status, S mode, and where the link was launched before attributing the change to an update, registry problem, or cleanup tool.
Use these clues to narrow it down

What to do if the default still changes
- Recheck the individual file and link associations in Settings > Apps > Default apps after the change occurs.
- On a work or school device, ask IT to inspect effective Group Policy or MDM settings rather than repeatedly changing the default without checking management.
- If Edge opens only from a particular Windows feature, test an ordinary link from another app to distinguish that feature’s behavior from a system-wide association change.
Microsoft’s Windows Experience Blog said in a post published March 17, 2023, that people should be able to control default applications such as their browser through Windows settings and dialogs.
