Use color filters when colors are hard to distinguish from one another; use contrast themes when text or interface elements blend into their background. They solve different visibility problems, and Windows 11 provides separate settings for each. Try the relevant option and check it in the apps and features you use most.

These are separate Windows settings with different purposes, not an either-or choice. The guidance does not establish that one is clinically appropriate for a particular condition or that there is a universal best setting.

What color filters change

Color filters alter the display’s color palette. Microsoft says they can help distinguish things that differ only by color, a useful distinction when looking at items such as chart series or status indicators. Windows includes filters for deuteranopia, protanopia, and tritanopia; the practical test is whether the selected filter makes relevant content easier for you to distinguish in the apps you use. See Microsoft’s color filters instructions and guidance on making Windows easier to see.

Turn on a color filter

  1. Open Start > Settings > Accessibility. Alternatively, press Windows logo key + U to open Accessibility settings.
  2. Select Color filters, turn on the switch, and choose a filter.
  3. To toggle filters with the keyboard, first enable Keyboard shortcut for color filters on that settings page. Then press Windows logo key + Ctrl + C.

What contrast themes change

Contrast themes use strongly distinct color combinations to make text and interface elements more visible. Windows lets you apply a built-in theme or edit colors for elements such as the background, text, hyperlinks, inactive text, selected text, and button text. Microsoft’s contrast themes instructions explain the available controls.

  1. On the Contrast themes page, select a theme and choose Edit.
  2. Select a screen element, choose a color, and adjust its brightness as needed.
  3. Select Done, then use Save as to name and save the custom theme. Save and apply it to use your changes.

To toggle the selected high contrast mode with a keyboard shortcut, press Left Alt + Left Shift + Print Screen. Windows 11’s current Settings label is Contrast themes, although the shortcut instructions retain the older “high contrast” wording.

How to tell whether the change helps

  • For a color filter, inspect the specific colors you need to tell apart in their usual context, such as a chart or indicator.
  • For a contrast theme, check whether text, links, buttons, and other controls stand out against their backgrounds.
  • Try one change at a time in the apps and features you rely on, then keep the setting that makes your actual tasks easier.

Microsoft’s feature documentation describes how the settings work; it does not provide quantified outcome data or identify one universally best configuration. Its separate guidance on color and contrast for accessibility in Microsoft 365 is relevant when evaluating content in those apps.
