To change how long Narrator keeps a notification or flash message on a braille display in Windows 11, open Narrator settings with Windows logo key + Ctrl + N, go to Braille, open Use a braille display with Narrator, and change Notification timeout. Windows does not publish one universal default, minimum, maximum, or numeric unit for this control; choose the duration offered by your current Windows 11 build.
Where the setting is located
The complete path is Narrator settings > Braille > Use a braille display with Narrator > Notification timeout. This controls the length of time a notification or flash message remains visible through Narrator’s braille output. It is separate from general on-screen notification settings because the value applies to messages delivered on the braille display.
Before you change the timeout
Confirm that Narrator braille is available
The Notification timeout control is part of Narrator’s braille settings. If braille support has not been installed, Windows may first show an option to download it. Select Download and install Braille, wait for setup to finish, and restart Windows if prompted. Then return to Narrator settings.
Connect a compatible display
Microsoft documents USB and serial port connections for braille displays used with Narrator. A USB refreshable braille display is therefore a relevant hardware option when you are setting up this feature; verify that your specific model supports the connection type and Windows 11 build you use.

Know which behavior you want
There are two ways to control how long a message stays available:
- Automatic control: choose a longer or shorter value under Notification timeout.
- Immediate control: pan the length of the message on the braille display to dismiss a flash message or notification right away.
Step-by-step: change Braille Display Notification Timeout
- Open Narrator settings. Press Windows logo key + Ctrl + N. This Microsoft-documented shortcut opens the Narrator settings page directly.
- Open the Braille section. In Narrator settings, locate and select Braille.
- Open the braille display controls. Select Use a braille display with Narrator. This opens the settings for the display that Narrator uses to present braille output.
- Install braille support if Windows requests it. Choose Download and install Braille. Allow the installation to complete. If Windows asks you to restart, restart before continuing.
- Enable braille after installation. Return to Narrator settings, turn on Turn on braille, and select Add a braille display. Choose the connection setup that matches your display; Microsoft lists USB and serial port connections.
- Locate Notification timeout. In the braille settings, find Notification timeout. Microsoft places this control with other braille preferences, including language, table type, and cursor options.
- Select a duration. Choose the value that fits your reading pace from the options exposed by your Windows 11 installation. Because Microsoft does not specify a universal default, minimum, maximum, or numeric unit, use the labels shown on your own build rather than relying on a value from another guide.
- Close Settings. The selected duration controls how long Narrator displays a notification or flash message through braille output.
Choosing the right workflow
| Situation | What to do | What to expect |
|---|---|---|
| Braille support is already installed | Open Narrator settings, then Braille and Use a braille display with Narrator. | The Notification timeout control should be available with the other braille options. |
| Braille support is not installed | Select Download and install Braille; restart if Windows prompts you, then return to the braille settings. | You can then turn on braille and add the display before changing the timeout. |
| Using a USB display | Add the display through the braille setup using the USB connection. | Narrator configures the display for braille output when setup succeeds. |
| Using a serial display | Add the display through the braille setup using the serial port connection. | The display uses the serial connection documented by Microsoft. |
| You want messages to remain available longer | Choose a longer option under Notification timeout. | Notifications and flash messages remain on the braille output for the selected period. |
| You want to dismiss one message immediately | Pan the length of the message on the braille display. | The current notification or flash message is dismissed without waiting for the automatic timeout. |
How notification timeout affects braille output
Narrator can present short-lived notifications and flash messages through a refreshable braille display. The timeout is the automatic display period for those messages. It does not change the language, braille table, or cursor behavior; those are separate settings in the same braille area.

- 40-cell braille display: Brailliant BI 40X gives blind users a 40-cell refreshable braille display with cursor routing keys for reading, writing, and screen reader access.
- Reliable multi-device connection: connect to 5 Bluetooth devices and 1 USB device at the same time, with Bluetooth 5 technology for faster, more stable wireless use.
- More than a display: use onboard KeySoft Lite apps including Editor, Braille Editor, Calculator, Date and Time, Online Libraries, Victor Reader, and Terminal.
- Built for braille reading: access participating online libraries including Bookshare, NLS BARD, and NFB Newsline, with DAISY support and unprotected audio playback.
- Comfortable daily use: HumanWare thumb keys, 8-dot Perkins keyboard, text-to-speech in supported languages, USB-C charging, 32GB internal storage, and up to 20 hours of battery life.
The setting is useful when the automatic period does not match your reading speed. A reader who needs more time can select a longer value. Someone who prefers an uncluttered display can select a shorter value or dismiss individual messages by panning.
Windows 11 builds can expose different duration choices. Microsoft’s documentation identifies the control but does not publish a single numeric schedule, so there is no supported universal answer such as “the timeout is exactly X seconds.” Record the wording and order shown in your current Settings page if you need to reproduce the choice on another computer.

Quick dismissal with panning
You do not have to wait for the timeout when a message has already been read. Microsoft states that panning the length of the message on the braille display dismisses a flash message or notification quickly. Use this when you want to keep a longer automatic timeout for complex messages but clear routine alerts immediately.
When panning is preferable
- You selected a long timeout for careful reading but finish a particular message early.
- A transient message is occupying the display while you need to return to the underlying content.
- You are testing a new timeout and want to clear each test notification manually.
Troubleshooting the setting
“Notification timeout” is not visible
- Open the path again: Windows logo key + Ctrl + N > Braille > Use a braille display with Narrator.
- If braille support has not been installed, choose Download and install Braille, finish the installation, and restart when prompted.
- After restarting, return to Narrator settings, turn on Turn on braille, and use Add a braille display before looking for the timeout control.
The documented setup sequence places the timeout inside the braille display settings, so a machine without installed braille support may not expose the control yet.

- In Use a braille display with Narrator, select Add a braille display and use the matching connection choice.
- If Windows requested a restart after braille installation, complete that restart before adding the display.
The Windows settings page is where the timeout is selected; the physical display still has to be added so Narrator has a braille output target.

What Microsoft documents—and what it does not
| Documented | Not specified as a universal value |
|---|---|
| The shortcut Windows logo key + Ctrl + N opens Narrator settings. | A single default timeout for every Windows 11 build. |
| The path through Braille and Use a braille display with Narrator. | A minimum or maximum duration. |
| The Download and install Braille step when support is missing. | Numeric unit values that apply to every installation. |
| Turn on braille and Add a braille display during setup. | A guarantee that every display model uses the same available choices. |
| USB and serial port connection types. | A timeout value that can be stated without reference to the current Windows 11 build. |
| Panning the message length to dismiss a notification or flash message quickly. | A separate timeout setting in ordinary Windows notification preferences. |
Practical setup checklist
- Have a braille display available, using USB or serial port connectivity supported by Narrator.
- Open Narrator settings with Windows logo key + Ctrl + N.
- Open Braille, then Use a braille display with Narrator.
- Install braille support if Windows offers Download and install Braille.
- Restart if prompted by Windows.
- Turn on Turn on braille and complete Add a braille display.
- Set Notification timeout to the duration shown in your current build.
- Pan the message length whenever you want to dismiss a notification immediately.
Frequently overlooked details
The timeout is specifically for braille notifications
Changing this value affects how Narrator presents notifications and flash messages on braille output. It is not a general timer for every Windows alert, nor does it alter the braille language, table type, or cursor options that appear alongside it.
The setting may require a setup pass first
On a fresh configuration, installing braille support and adding the display are prerequisites in the documented workflow. If you search for the timeout before completing those steps, return to Braille and finish the setup sequence first.
There is no one-size-fits-all number
Microsoft identifies the control but does not publish a default, minimum, maximum, or numeric unit values. The reliable instruction is therefore to choose among the options displayed by your own Windows 11 build and adjust after real reading use.
