To make Windows 11 close apps automatically when you sign out, restart, or shut down, set the per-user registry string AutoEndTasks to 1 under HKEY_CURRENT_USERControl PanelDesktop. To restore the default behavior described by the tutorial, remove that value. Save your work first: automatic closure can discard unsaved changes.
What AutoEndTasks changes
During sign-out, restart, or shutdown, Windows asks running apps to close. If an app does not finish, Windows may show an End Task prompt so you can choose whether to proceed or return to the desktop. With AutoEndTasks enabled, Windows force-closes apps rather than waiting for your choice and continues the requested operation, according to the ElevenForum Windows 11 tutorial.

Turn on AutoEndTasks in Registry Editor
- Save open documents and close applications normally. Enabling this setting can force-close apps without preserving unsaved work.
- Open Registry Editor. If prompted by User Account Control, approve the request only if you intend to make this change.
- Go to
HKEY_CURRENT_USERControl PanelDesktop. This is a per-user setting in the cited tutorial. - In the right pane, create or modify the String Value (REG_SZ) named
AutoEndTasksand set its data to1. - Sign out and back in, or restart, to apply the change.
Turn off AutoEndTasks and restore the prompt behavior
- Open Registry Editor and navigate to
HKEY_CURRENT_USERControl PanelDesktop. - Remove the
AutoEndTasksvalue. - Sign out and back in, or restart, for the change to take effect.
The cited tutorial describes deleting the value—not setting it to 0—as the default setting. Before changing the registry, confirm that you are in the intended user account and key.
Why Windows may show an End Task prompt
Windows sends shutdown-related messages to applications and waits for them to respond. An older Microsoft Press technical chapter by Mark E. Russinovich, Kate Chase, and Alex Ionescu describes the WM_QUERYENDSESSION and WM_ENDSESSION sequence and a wait involving HungAppTimeout. Its documented default is 5,000 milliseconds; that 2012 reference should not be treated as a guarantee for every current Windows 11 build. The ElevenForum tutorial, updated September 15, 2026, describes a five-second default timeout and says an unanswered End Task dialog returns to the desktop after one minute. These are that tutorial’s timeout descriptions, not independently verified specifications for every release.

What this registry change does not control
AutoEndTasks concerns apps that do not close during a user’s sign-out, restart, or shutdown. It is not a Windows Update restart-scheduling setting, nor does it change service shutdown timeouts. Microsoft’s device restart documentation covers update-related restart controls and cautions against direct registry editing in that policy context; it does not define this AutoEndTasks setting.
The exact Windows 11 registry procedure here is documented by a third-party tutorial; no current official Microsoft page defining this specific value is established in the cited material. The change therefore should not be treated as a fix for every shutdown blocker or as guaranteed to behave identically across Windows builds.
