Windows 11 App Resume normally does not require a separate master switch. When a Windows 11 PC is paired with an Android 10-or-later phone through Link to Windows and Mobile devices, Resume is enabled by default. Open a supported app on the phone, perform a supported activity, and Windows can place a phone-badged alert on the taskbar; selecting it opens the matching PC app so you can continue.

What the Windows 11 App Resume feature does

Resume is Microsoft’s built-in continuity feature for a linked Android phone and Windows 11 PC. Microsoft describes it as a way to continue activity between the two devices with a single-click alert delivered on the Windows taskbar.

The alert is contextual rather than a general phone mirror. A supported app must be open on the phone and you must perform an activity that the app exposes for continuation. Windows then shows a phone-badged version of the app icon on the taskbar. Selecting that icon opens the corresponding app on the PC and takes you to the available continuation point.

For example, playing a Spotify track or podcast episode on the phone can produce a Resume alert for Spotify on Windows. Resume does not transfer every app, screen, or unsaved task. The phone app, the specific activity, and Microsoft’s rollout of the feature all determine whether an alert appears.

Requirements before you try to enable Resume

Check every prerequisite first. If one is missing, the Resume setting or alert may not appear even though the PC and phone are otherwise working normally.

Requirement What to check
PC The computer must run Windows 11.
Phone The phone must run Android 10 or a later Android release.
Network Both devices need an internet connection while you set up and use Resume.
Phone app Link to Windows must be installed on the Android phone and connected to the PC.
Windows pairing The phone must appear under Settings > Bluetooth & devices > Mobile devices.
Supported activity The app and the action you perform must be among those supported for Resume.

An Android phone is a compatibility requirement, not a separate purchase recommended by this guide. Resume is part of Windows continuity and is not a utility that requires a subscription or standalone installation on the PC.

Turn on Windows 11 App Resume step by step

Use the current Windows settings path below. The labels can be localized, but the hierarchy is the same on supported Windows 11 installations.

  1. Open Windows Settings. Select Start, then Settings.
  2. Open Mobile devices. Choose Bluetooth & devices in the left navigation, then select Mobile devices.
  3. Allow mobile access. Turn on Allow this PC to access your mobile devices. This permission allows Windows to use the phone connection for features such as Resume.
  4. Manage the paired phone. Select Manage devices. If your phone is not listed, follow the connection flow shown by Windows and complete the pairing steps on both devices.
  5. Confirm Link to Windows on Android. Open the Link to Windows app on the phone and finish any sign-in, pairing, or permission prompts. Allow the app to run in the background. Microsoft says background operation keeps Resume working reliably.
  6. Keep both devices online. Connect the PC and phone to the internet. Resume depends on the linked-device service, so a local Bluetooth pairing without internet access is not enough.
  7. Perform a supported activity. Open a supported app on the phone and do the action that creates a continuation point. With Spotify, play a track or podcast episode rather than merely opening the app.
  8. Use the taskbar alert. Look for the phone-badged app icon or Resume alert on the Windows taskbar. Select it to open the corresponding PC app and continue.

There may be no separate Turn on Resume switch. Microsoft’s current support guidance says Resume is enabled by default when the prerequisites are met. The Mobile devices setup and the background permission for Link to Windows are the practical activation steps.

How to trigger and recognize a Resume alert

Resume responds to an activity, not simply to the presence of a paired phone. Use this sequence when testing the feature:

  1. Unlock the Android phone and verify that Link to Windows is connected.
  2. Open the supported app you want to continue on the PC.
  3. Perform a supported action, such as starting Spotify playback.
  4. Leave the phone connected to the internet and give Windows a moment to process the activity.
  5. Check the taskbar for a phone-badged icon or Resume alert associated with the app.
  6. Select the alert once. Windows should open the matching PC app rather than a generic phone-control window.

If the app is supported but the activity is not, no alert is expected. For instance, opening a supported app without starting a supported session may not create anything that Windows can resume.

Apps and activities Microsoft supports

Microsoft’s January 2026 support list names these examples. Availability can depend on the phone manufacturer, app version, and whether the feature has reached your PC.

App Continuation Microsoft lists Phone-side action to try
Spotify Continue music and podcast playback Play a track or podcast episode.
vivo Browser Continue browsing Open a browsing session in vivo Browser on a supported vivo phone.
WhatsApp Continue chat conversations Open a conversation and use the supported chat activity.

This is a supported-app list, not a promise that every release of each app exposes every screen for continuation. Microsoft can add, change, or withdraw app support as the feature develops. If an app is absent from the list, opening it will not reliably produce a Resume alert.

What to do when the Resume alert is missing

Work through these checks in order. Each one rules out a different failure point.

1. Confirm that Windows sees the phone

Return to Settings > Bluetooth & devices > Mobile devices. The phone should be listed there, and Allow this PC to access your mobile devices should be on. If the phone is absent, select Manage devices and repeat the connection flow before testing Resume again.

2. Check Link to Windows background permission

Open Link to Windows on Android and make sure it is allowed to run in the background. Battery-saving or background restrictions can stop the service from reporting activity to Windows. Microsoft specifically identifies background operation as important for reliable Resume behavior.

3. Verify internet access on both devices

Check the Wi-Fi or mobile-data indicator on the phone and the network indicator in Windows. A phone can remain listed as paired while an offline condition prevents a new activity from reaching the PC.

4. Test a known supported app and action

Use Spotify as a controlled test: start a track or podcast episode, then watch the taskbar. Testing an unsupported app, or only launching a supported app without performing its supported activity, cannot confirm that Resume is malfunctioning.

5. Look for the phone badge on the taskbar

The alert may appear as an app icon with a phone badge rather than a large notification panel. Inspect the taskbar carefully, including its overflow area if your taskbar combines less-used icons there.

6. Allow for Microsoft’s staged rollout

Microsoft’s August 22, 2025 Insider announcement described Resume as a gradual rollout. Some users who completed setup were told to wait until the feature reached their PC. If the phone is correctly paired, Link to Windows can run in the background, both devices are online, and a supported activity still produces no alert, rollout availability may be the reason.

7. Separate rollout delay from an app limitation

Try more than one supported example only if you have access to them. If one supported app produces an alert and another does not, the difference may be the app’s activity support rather than Windows pairing. If none produces an alert after all setup checks, the staged rollout or a device-side connection issue is more likely.

Turn Resume off or limit which apps can use it

You can disable the feature without removing the phone pairing:

  1. Open Settings in Windows 11.
  2. Go to Apps > Resume.
  3. Toggle Resume off.

The same Settings > Apps > Resume page also lets you disable individual supported apps. Use per-app controls when you want to keep continuity for one activity, such as music playback, but stop alerts from another app.

Turning Resume off controls the Windows feature. It does not uninstall Link to Windows from Android or necessarily remove the phone from Mobile devices. Those are separate connection and device-management choices.

Why some apps can resume and others cannot

Resume depends on an app publishing enough activity context for Windows to reopen a meaningful continuation point. Microsoft’s developer documentation explains that Windows Resume allows developers to add continuity between Windows apps and apps on other platforms by publishing activity context. Windows can then expose that context through a taskbar Resume badge.

That design explains three common outcomes:

  • Supported app and supported action: Windows can show a taskbar alert and open the corresponding PC app.
  • Supported app but unsupported action: the app may open normally on the phone, but there is no resumable activity for Windows to present.
  • Unsupported app: Windows has no documented Resume integration for that app, so no alert should be expected.

Resume is therefore different from screen casting, remote control, or a universal Android-app launcher. It transfers an app’s published continuation context; it does not promise to reproduce every phone screen on the PC.

A quick decision guide

  • Android 10 or newer, Windows 11, phone listed in Mobile devices, and Link to Windows connected: Resume should be available by default once the rollout reaches the PC.
  • Phone paired but no alert from Spotify: check background permission, internet access, and that playback actually started.
  • Alert appears for one app only: the other app or activity may not be supported.
  • All setup checks pass but no app produces an alert: the feature may not have reached the PC yet because of the staged rollout.
  • You no longer want taskbar continuation alerts: use Settings > Apps > Resume to turn Resume off or disable selected apps.

Frequently asked questions

Is there a separate Resume switch in Windows 11?

Usually not. Microsoft says Resume is enabled by default when the required Windows, Android, Link to Windows, Mobile devices, internet, and supported-activity conditions are satisfied.

Can Resume continue any Android app?

No. The app and the specific action must be supported. Microsoft’s January 2026 examples are Spotify for music and podcasts, vivo Browser for browsing on vivo phones, and WhatsApp for chat conversations.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Does the phone need to stay nearby through Bluetooth?

The documented setup requires the phone to be linked through Link to Windows, listed in Mobile devices, and connected to the internet. A Bluetooth-only connection does not replace that linked-device setup.

Why did Resume work once and then stop?

First verify that Link to Windows is still allowed to run in the background and that both devices are online. Then confirm that you are repeating a supported activity. If setup remains correct, a rollout or service change can affect availability.
