Windows 11’s App execution aliases settings turn registered command shortcuts on or off. An alias is a short executable-style name—such as python.exe—that can launch an app without requiring its full file path. Turning an alias off disables that shortcut; it does not uninstall the app or change file-opening defaults or privacy permissions.
What an app execution alias does
An app execution alias is a command name registered by an app. When a user or another process runs that name, Windows can use it to start the app without the caller specifying the app’s full path. Microsoft describes this as a way to start an application “without having to specify the full path to your app.” Microsoft Learn explains how packaged apps register execution aliases.
The App execution aliases page lists registered entries and lets you enable or disable them individually. The switch controls whether that app’s alias is available as a command shortcut. It does not remove the app.

| Control | What it affects |
|---|---|
| App execution alias | Whether a registered command name can launch its associated app. |
| Default apps | Which app opens a file extension or link protocol. Find these under Settings > Apps > Default apps. Microsoft’s Windows 11 default-app instructions cover that separate setting. |
| Privacy permissions | Whether apps can access capabilities such as camera, location, or contacts. These are managed separately under Settings > Privacy & security. Microsoft’s Windows privacy guidance describes those controls. |
| App installation | Whether the app is installed. Disabling an alias is not an uninstall operation; Microsoft treats uninstalling a packaged app and disabling its alias as separate ways to stop the redirection. |
The alias page also does not determine every command typed on the PC. Other executables and folders listed in PATH can affect which program a command runs.

Why typing python may open the Microsoft Store
Windows includes Python command shortcuts intended to help users find a Python package in the Store. If Python is not installed, running the shortcut without arguments can direct you to the Store. The App Installer aliases for python.exe and python3.exe can be disabled in App execution aliases. Microsoft’s Python guidance for Windows describes these shortcuts and related setup considerations.
If you installed Python separately, the result depends on which command is found through alias handling and PATH. The alias switch is one part of command resolution, not a universal fix for every Python installation or terminal configuration.

Check an alias when a command behaves unexpectedly
- Open Start and search for Manage app execution aliases.
- Find the entry whose command name matches the command you typed, such as
python.exeorpython3.exe. - Switch off the unwanted alias if you do not want that registered shortcut to handle the command.
- Open a fresh terminal and try the command again. If it still fails or starts an unexpected installation, check which versions are installed and inspect PATH ordering.
For Python, Microsoft notes that %UserProfile%AppDataLocalMicrosoftWindowsApps must be on PATH for Windows aliases to be found. The Python for Windows documentation recommends checking aliases and PATH when python or py does not behave as expected. The exact diagnosis can vary by shell, Python distribution, and Windows setup.
Should you turn off python.exe?
Turn off the App Installer alias if you do not want the Windows Store shortcut to respond to that command—for example, if it opens the Store when you intend to run another Python installation. If you rely on the shortcut to find Python in the Store, leave it enabled. If the command still does not resolve to your intended installation after changing the alias, review installed versions and PATH rather than assuming the toggle controls them all.

When two apps claim the same alias
Packaged apps declare aliases as part of their app registration. Microsoft says that if multiple apps register the same alias, Windows invokes the app registered last. That can cause a command conflict; distinct alias names avoid the collision. The relevant switch lets you disable an individual app’s registered entry, but it does not change the app’s installation state.
