The practical Windows 11 alternatives covered by current official documentation are Linux Mint, Ubuntu Desktop and ChromeOS Flex. Mint is the closest general-purpose replacement for a modest PC, Ubuntu offers a broader mainstream Linux desktop with a current long-term-support release, and ChromeOS Flex is best when nearly everything you do happens in a browser. None guarantees that every Windows application, game, peripheral or workflow will transfer unchanged.

Your computer model, required software, games, and willingness to reinstall should decide the choice. Test from USB where possible, verify essential applications before changing the internal drive, and keep a backup of files you cannot replace.

Which Windows 11 alternative fits your situation?

Use this table as a shortlist, not as a universal ranking. The figures are the operating systems’ published requirements, not a benchmark showing that one will run faster than another on the same computer.

Operating system Best evidence-based fit Published requirements and support Important limitation
Linux Mint A familiar, general-purpose Linux desktop for everyday work, older laptops and configurable local applications. 2 GB RAM minimum, 4 GB recommended; 20 GB disk minimum, 100 GB recommended; 1024×768 display; five-year LTS support. Linux Mint FAQ Proprietary ATI and Nvidia drivers are easy to install but are not installed by default. Check graphics, Wi-Fi, printers and required applications.
Ubuntu Desktop 26.04.1 LTS A broad general desktop for office work, development and common Linux applications, with a large hardware and software ecosystem. Canonical lists a 2 GHz dual-core processor, 6 GB RAM and 25 GB free storage for a comfortable experience. The 26.04 LTS release receives free security and maintenance updates for five years and is supported until April 2031. Download Ubuntu Desktop · Release notes Its comfortable-use baseline is higher than Mint’s published minimum. The requirements describe stated capabilities, not a performance comparison with Windows.
ChromeOS Flex Browser-first work, web applications, school or kiosk-style use, and repurposing an eligible older PC or Mac. x86-64 Intel or AMD device, 4 GB RAM, 16 GB internal storage, and an installer USB of at least 8 GB. What kind of replacement do you need?

A general desktop replacement

Choose a conventional Linux desktop when you need locally installed programs, a full file system, multiple desktop applications and the ability to configure the machine. Mint and Ubuntu fit this category. They can run browsers, productivity software and development tools, but Windows-only programs may require a Linux version, a compatibility layer or a different service.

A browser-first computer

ChromeOS Flex makes sense when your work is already in webmail, cloud documents, web-based administration systems and browser applications. It can turn an otherwise usable older computer into a simpler web terminal. It is not a drop-in substitute for a Windows desktop program that has no web or Linux equivalent.

A different computer rather than a different installation

macOS belongs to a separate buying decision. The sources for this comparison do not establish a supported way to install macOS on an ordinary Windows PC, so treat it as an option that normally means buying Apple hardware and then checking your applications, peripherals and budget separately. It is not a software replacement path you should assume will work on your existing PC.

Linux Mint: the modest, familiar general-purpose option

Linux Mint describes its goal as being “comfortable and easy to use” while remaining powerful and configurable. That combination makes it a sensible first Linux test for someone leaving Windows but still wanting a traditional desktop, local folders and adjustable settings.

Hardware requirements

The Mint FAQ lists 2 GB of RAM, with 4 GB recommended; 20 GB of disk space, with 100 GB recommended; and a display capable of 1024×768. The recommended figures leave room for applications, updates and personal files, whereas the minimum figures describe what the project publishes as a starting point rather than a promise of a fast experience. Confirm that your computer’s firmware, graphics, wireless adapter, printer and other peripherals are supported before erasing Windows.

Drivers and hardware checks

Mint’s FAQ says proprietary ATI and Nvidia drivers are easy to install, but they are not installed by default. That matters for graphics acceleration, external displays and some games. After a temporary boot, test the hardware you actually use: connect to Wi-Fi, play audio through the built-in speakers and headphones, attach your monitor or dock, wake the computer from sleep, use the camera and print or scan if those are daily tasks.

Support horizon

Mint publishes a five-year LTS support period. A long support window reduces the pressure to reinstall every year, but you still need to apply updates and confirm the project’s current release and upgrade guidance when you install.

Ubuntu Desktop 26.04.1 LTS: broader desktop and development coverage

Canonical’s current download page identifies Ubuntu Desktop 26.04.1 LTS. Ubuntu lists common desktop applications such as Firefox, Chrome, Discord, Steam and OBS Studio, along with a certified-hardware category covering laptops, desktops and workstations from hardware partners. Those listings show the intended breadth of the platform; they do not prove that every application or device works on every PC.

Published requirements and lifecycle

Canonical’s 26.04 LTS release notes state: “Ubuntu Desktop 26.04 LTS requires a 2 GHz dual-core processor or better, a minimum of 6 GB RAM and 25 GB of free storage space for a comfortable experience.” Canonical’s download page describes five years of free security and maintenance updates, and the release notes give an end date of April 2031. Keep the qualification “comfortable experience” attached to those numbers: they are the publisher’s guidance, not a comparative benchmark.

When Ubuntu is the better Linux starting point

  • You want a mainstream distribution with extensive vendor documentation and a visible certified-hardware program.
  • You use development tools or applications for which Ubuntu installation instructions are commonly supplied.
  • You need a current LTS base and are comfortable with a slightly higher memory and storage baseline than Mint’s published minimum.

Windows software and games

Ubuntu’s release material describes an NTSYNC driver that can offer performance potential for Windows games running through Wine and Proton. “Potential” is not a compatibility guarantee. A particular game can still fail because of its launcher, graphics API, digital-rights system, anti-cheat requirement, controller, mod or update. Check each must-play title and its anti-cheat policy before deleting Windows.

ChromeOS Flex: a browser-first way to reuse a PC

Google says ChromeOS Flex works on most Windows, Mac and Linux devices made over the last 10 or more years, but it guarantees functionality only on certified models. The age statement is therefore a broad possibility, not a support promise for your exact machine.

Minimum device and installer requirements

The documented baseline is an x86-64 Intel or AMD device with 4 GB of RAM and 16 GB of internal storage. Creating the installer requires a USB drive with at least 8 GB. Check the certified-model list for your exact manufacturer and model, including any notes about features that are unavailable or require a particular firmware version.

What you gain and what you give up

You gain a focused browser environment and a way to test the system before installation. You give up the assumption that traditional Windows desktop software, local game libraries and every peripheral will be available. If your work depends on a proprietary Windows accounting package, a specialized engineering tool or a game with strict anti-cheat, ChromeOS Flex should not be your first choice unless you have a confirmed web or remote-access alternative.

Applications, peripherals and games: verify the must-haves

Operating-system choice should start with a list of tasks, not with a distribution name. Classify every essential item before you install.

Applications

  • Native Linux or web version: install or test that version and confirm it opens the files you use.
  • Windows-only program: look for an officially supported web service, Linux build or documented compatibility route. Do not assume a compatibility layer will reproduce every plug-in, macro or hardware integration.
  • Subscription or cloud service: sign in from a temporary browser session and verify file export, printing, offline access and account security.

Games

Check the exact title, launcher, graphics requirements, controller and anti-cheat system. Ubuntu’s NTSYNC work may improve the performance potential of some Wine and Proton workloads, but it does not turn Linux into a universal Windows-game substitute. Keep a Windows installation available until the games you care about have passed a real test.

Peripherals

Test printers, scanners, docks, fingerprint readers, webcams, Bluetooth accessories, specialist keyboards and color-sensitive monitors. A computer can boot successfully while a single missing driver makes it unsuitable for your work.

Try before replacing Windows

Temporary USB sessions

A USB test is the lowest-risk first step because it lets you inspect hardware without immediately changing the internal disk. Ubuntu documents running from USB to try the desktop without installing. Google documents temporarily running ChromeOS Flex from its USB installer. Mint also provides installation media, but use the project’s current instructions for the exact image and boot procedure.

  1. Back up documents, photos, authentication keys and any other irreplaceable data before creating or booting installation media.
  2. Download the image and instructions from the operating system’s official page. Use a USB drive large enough for that image; ChromeOS Flex specifically requires an installer drive of at least 8 GB.
  3. Restart the computer and use its manufacturer-specific boot-menu key to select the USB drive. The key and firmware wording vary by model.
  4. Choose the temporary or “try” option where offered. Connect to Wi-Fi, test sound, video, sleep, camera, Bluetooth, external displays and the applications central to your work.
  5. Shut down, remove the USB and confirm that Windows still starts normally before deciding on an installation.

A temporary session is useful but not conclusive: performance, suspend behavior and driver availability can change after a full installation, encryption setup or proprietary-driver selection.

Dual boot: keep Windows while you evaluate Linux

Ubuntu documents installation alongside Windows. Dual boot preserves a fallback for software and games that you have not migrated, but it adds partition, bootloader and update complexity. The available space must be unallocated or safely resizable, and the details depend on the computer’s firmware, encryption and current partition layout.

BitLocker and partition planning

BitLocker can affect whether the installer can resize the Windows partition or configure a shared boot. Do not proceed until you understand the recovery-key requirement and have a verified backup. If the installer cannot offer a safe resize, stop rather than deleting a partition to force the issue.

When dual boot is appropriate

  • You need Windows for a small number of applications or games but want Linux for daily work.
  • You have enough internal storage for two systems and a separate backup.
  • You are prepared to troubleshoot boot entries and recover Windows if a firmware update changes the boot order.

Dual boot is not a backup. A damaged drive, mistaken partition change or failed update can affect both systems, so keep personal files on separate backup media or storage as well.

Replacing Windows completely

A clean installation gives one operating system all of the disk and avoids maintaining two boot environments. It also removes the easiest fallback, so do it only after testing the replacement and confirming access to every essential account and file.

  1. Inventory applications, licenses, browser bookmarks, password-manager access, two-factor authentication methods, printers and device-specific utilities.
  2. Export or copy files that are not already safely stored elsewhere. Verify the backup by opening representative documents.
  3. Record the computer model, firmware settings, network credentials and any recovery keys. Keep Windows recovery media if the manufacturer supplies it.
  4. Test the candidate operating system from USB and resolve hardware or application blockers.
  5. Start the official installer, select the internal-drive replacement option only when you understand which partitions will be erased, and let the installer finish without interrupting power.
  6. Install updates, enable the drivers the system recommends, reconnect peripherals and restore files in stages.

The reviewed operating-system pages do not specify a particular backup device or backup procedure. The practical requirement is simply to maintain a separate, verified copy before an irreversible install.

Hardware buying instead of software migration

If your existing PC is too old, lacks supported drivers or cannot meet the chosen system’s requirements, replacing the hardware may be less frustrating than forcing an installation. Canonical maintains a certified category for Ubuntu laptops, desktops and workstations from hardware partners. Treat that category as a place to investigate models, not as proof that every current retail configuration has identical support; verify the exact model, components and seller’s availability before buying.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

ChromeOS Flex certification is likewise model-specific. A machine listed as certified is a safer starting point than one that merely meets the processor, memory and storage minimums.

A decision framework you can apply in 15 minutes

  1. List non-negotiables. Write down the applications, games, peripherals, file formats and online services that must work.
  2. Choose the usage pattern. If most tasks are browser-based, evaluate ChromeOS Flex; if you need a full local desktop, compare Mint and Ubuntu.
  3. Compare hardware headroom. Mint’s published baseline is 2 GB RAM and 20 GB disk, Ubuntu’s comfortable-use guidance is 6 GB RAM and 25 GB free space, and ChromeOS Flex requires 4 GB RAM and 16 GB internal storage. Leave additional room for updates and personal data.
  4. Check support needs. Mint publishes five-year LTS support; Ubuntu 26.04 LTS is supported until April 2031 with five years of free security and maintenance updates. Confirm the current lifecycle when you install.
  5. Test the highest-risk item first. Do not spend an afternoon testing wallpaper and menus before checking the one application, game or peripheral that could stop the migration.
  6. Pick a migration mode. Use USB for evaluation, dual boot for a staged Linux transition, or a clean replacement when the backup and compatibility checks are complete.

Common failure points and recovery choices

The computer boots but a device does not work

Record the exact model and test another kernel or supported driver only through the distribution’s documented tools. For Mint, remember that proprietary ATI and Nvidia drivers are not installed by default. If a work-critical device remains unreliable, return to Windows or choose hardware with explicit certification.

A required Windows program will not run

Check for a web or native Linux version, then test the documented compatibility route with a copy of your data. If a license, plug-in or hardware key is missing, retain Windows through dual boot or use a separate Windows machine rather than risking the production workflow.

A game fails after an update

Recheck the game’s launcher, Proton or Wine configuration and anti-cheat policy. An earlier successful launch is not a permanent compatibility guarantee. Keep a Windows fallback for competitive or business-critical titles.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

The installer cannot resize the Windows partition

Stop and inspect free space, partition layout and BitLocker state. Do not delete recovery or system partitions to make room. A clean installation after a verified backup, or a separate drive, is safer than forcing an unsafe resize.

ChromeOS Flex installs but a feature is missing

Compare the exact model with Google’s certified-device entry and its feature notes. Certification, rather than age or minimum memory alone, is the relevant guarantee. If the model is not certified and a missing camera, wireless adapter or sleep function matters, select another operating system or hardware.

Bottom line

There is no evidence-based single “best” Windows 11 replacement for every PC. Start with Linux Mint when you want a configurable general desktop on modest hardware; choose Ubuntu Desktop 26.04.1 LTS when its broader desktop and development ecosystem and April 2031 support horizon fit your needs; choose ChromeOS Flex when your work is genuinely browser-first and your exact machine is certified. Test from USB, verify must-have software and peripherals, and make a separate backup before dual-booting or erasing Windows.
