If your PC cannot run a supported Windows 11 release, first confirm why it fails. Check the processor, TPM 2.0, UEFI/Secure Boot capability, memory, storage, graphics and display requirements with Microsoft’s Windows 11 requirements and PC Health Check or Windows Update. A machine with 4 GB of RAM and adequate storage is not automatically eligible.

If the hardware cannot be made eligible, the practical choices are ChromeOS Flex for a browser-first computer, Linux Mint for a conventional desktop operating system, a short Windows 10 security bridge where Microsoft offers it, or a replacement PC that meets Windows 11 requirements. The right choice depends on your exact hardware, applications, peripherals, support horizon and budget—not on age alone.

Start with a device-specific Windows 11 eligibility check

Do not choose an alternative until you know whether the current computer can meet Microsoft’s supported requirements. Open Windows Update and run the available compatibility check, or install Microsoft’s PC Health Check. Record the exact processor model, installed memory, storage capacity, firmware mode, TPM status, graphics hardware and display resolution.

Requirement What to verify Why it matters
Processor The exact CPU model must appear on Microsoft’s supported-processor lists. Adding RAM or storage cannot make an ineligible processor supported.
TPM Windows 11 requires TPM 2.0. A missing or unsupported TPM can block eligibility even when the PC otherwise seems fast enough.
Firmware and boot UEFI and Secure Boot capability. Legacy firmware configurations may fail the supported-release check.
Memory At least 4 GB of RAM is listed in Microsoft’s requirements. Meeting the memory minimum alone does not make a PC eligible.
Storage At least 64 GB of storage is listed. The requirement concerns capacity, not whether the drive is an SSD or hard disk.
Graphics and display Compatible graphics hardware and a qualifying display. Older graphics adapters or displays can be disqualifying even if the CPU passes.

Use the result for the specific computer, not a generic “old PC” rule. If a setting, firmware update or component change might resolve a failure, check the computer maker’s documentation or ask a qualified technician whether that change is supported. Do not assume that a memory upgrade fixes a processor, TPM or firmware failure.

Can you keep using Windows 10?

Yes, Windows 10 continues to start and run after its support deadline, but Microsoft ended support on October 14, 2025. According to Microsoft’s support notice, the operating system no longer receives regular security updates, other software updates or technical assistance. Microsoft also describes the lifecycle and end-of-support implications on its Windows 10 specifications page.

That makes an unsupported Windows 10 installation a transition state, not a long-term security plan. Keep it disconnected from sensitive work where practical, maintain reliable backups, and make a dated plan to migrate or replace it rather than treating continued booting as continued support.

Consumer Extended Security Updates as a bridge

Microsoft identifies a one-year Consumer Extended Security Updates option for eligible Windows 10 PCs. ESU can provide additional time to move files, test applications or budget for replacement, but the exact eligibility, enrollment process and cost depend on the Windows edition, user type and country. Confirm those terms directly with Microsoft before relying on ESU; the high-level availability does not establish a universal price or enrollment rule.

Compare the supported paths

Path Best fit Key requirements or limits Support and workflow question
Make the current PC eligible for Windows 11 A fixable hardware or configuration issue and a need to keep Windows applications. Requires a supported CPU, TPM 2.0, UEFI/Secure Boot capability, memory, storage, graphics and display compatibility. Ask the manufacturer or a hardware professional whether the failed requirement can be resolved; a CPU failure cannot be solved by adding memory.
ChromeOS Flex Web-centered work, education, email, documents and media on a compatible computer. 64-bit Intel or AMD hardware, 4 GB RAM, 16 GB internal storage and USB boot capability; Google guarantees functionality only on certified models. Check the exact model and its certification end date, then verify that required applications and peripherals work in a browser or have ChromeOS support.
Linux Mint General desktop and laptop use where Linux applications and device support are adequate. 2 GB RAM minimum, 4 GB recommended and 20 GB disk space minimum. Test essential software, printers, scanners, Wi-Fi adapters and other devices before replacing the existing system.
Windows 10 Consumer ESU A short transition while you test alternatives or arrange a replacement. One-year option for eligible consumer devices; terms vary by jurisdiction and edition. It postpones the decision; it does not turn Windows 10 into a fully supported long-term platform.
Replace the computer with a Windows 11 PC Windows-only applications, specialist peripherals or organizational requirements rule out other operating systems. The replacement must meet current Windows 11 requirements and your performance needs. Confirm CPU generation, TPM, firmware, memory, storage, display and port requirements before purchase.

ChromeOS Flex: the browser-first option

ChromeOS Flex is worth investigating when most of your work happens on websites or web applications. It is not a universal substitute for Windows: software that requires a Windows desktop installer, specialized drivers or unsupported peripherals may not transfer.

Check hardware before creating an installer

  • The computer must use 64-bit Intel or AMD hardware.
  • Google lists 4 GB of RAM and 16 GB of internal storage as minimum device requirements.
  • The computer must be able to boot from USB.
  • Use Google’s certified-model list for the exact manufacturer and model. Google guarantees functionality on certified models, and certification has an end date. An unlisted computer may boot, but individual features are not guaranteed.

Create and test the USB installer

  1. Read Google’s current ChromeOS Flex installation instructions and confirm that the target model is suitable.
  2. Prepare a USB flash drive with at least 8 GB of capacity. The creation process erases the drive’s contents, so copy anything important from it first.
  3. Use Google’s installer process to create the bootable media, then boot the target PC from USB using the computer’s documented boot-menu key.
  4. Use a live or trial session, where available, to test Wi-Fi, sound, display output, sleep, keyboard shortcuts, printing, cameras and any other equipment your work requires.
  5. Only after testing and backing up your files should you choose the installation option that replaces the existing operating system.

A generic 8 GB-or-larger USB drive is sufficient for the stated capacity requirement; no particular brand or model is established here. Keep the installer until the new system is stable, because it can be useful for recovery or reinstallation.

When ChromeOS Flex is a poor fit

  • Your primary applications require Windows-only desktop software.
  • You depend on a device whose driver or management utility is not available in ChromeOS Flex.
  • The computer is not certified and a feature is business-critical.
  • You need local workflows that cannot be completed through supported web applications.

Linux Mint: a conventional desktop alternative

Linux Mint is a free, Linux-based operating system designed for desktop and laptop computers, according to its official FAQ. It can be a better fit than a browser-only system when you want a familiar desktop, local files and a broad Linux software ecosystem, provided your applications and hardware are compatible.

  • Fast transfer speeds up to 100MB/s
  • USB 3.0-enabled and USB 2.0-compatible
  • Protect private files with SanDisk SecureAccess software
  • Support: 5-year limited warranty

Published hardware requirements

  • Linux Mint lists 2 GB of RAM as a minimum and recommends 4 GB.
  • It lists 20 GB of disk space as the minimum.
  • The release list currently identifies Linux Mint 22.3 as a long-term-support release supported until April 2029. Check the current release list when you install, because release numbers and support dates can change.

These figures are minimums, not performance guarantees. A low-power processor, slow hard disk or very old graphics adapter can still make the desktop feel sluggish. Conversely, an older computer with an SSD and adequate memory may be comfortable for office work and browsing.

Validate your workflow before replacing Windows

  1. List every application you use, including accounting tools, games, VPN clients, line-of-business software and utilities that run in the background.
  2. For each item, identify a Linux version, a browser version or a documented compatibility method. If none exists, decide whether the task can move to another computer or service.
  3. List printers, scanners, label makers, smart-card readers, graphics tablets, docking stations and specialty devices. Check whether Linux drivers or supported protocols exist for each.
  4. Boot a Mint installer in a trial environment, when practical, and test networking, graphics, audio, suspend, external displays and the devices on your list.
  5. Back up personal data and export application settings before installation. Keep a recovery path for the former system until you have verified the replacement.

Mint’s support horizon through April 2029 gives a defined planning date for the listed 22.3 release. It does not guarantee that every older computer or peripheral will work, so hardware testing remains essential.

When replacing the PC is the sensible answer

Choose a Windows 11-eligible replacement when your work depends on Windows-only applications, proprietary drivers, enterprise management tools or peripherals that neither alternative supports. Replacement also avoids spending time adapting a workflow that cannot realistically move.

  • Protect your private files with included SanDisk SecureAccess software (Password protection uses 128-bit AES encryption and is supported by Windows Vista, Windows 7, Windows 8, Windows 10 and Mac OS X v10.6+ (Software download required for Mac, see official SanDisk Secure Access website for more details.))
  • Store more with capacities up to 32GB (1 gigabyte (GB) = 1 billion bytes. Some capacity not available for data storage.)

Specify the replacement by requirements, not marketing labels

  • Verify the exact processor model against Microsoft’s current supported list.
  • Confirm TPM 2.0, UEFI and Secure Boot capability.
  • Choose more than the 4 GB memory and 64 GB storage minimum if your applications, multitasking or updates require headroom.
  • Match ports, display outputs, networking, camera, audio and docking requirements to the equipment you already own.
  • Check the manufacturer’s support and firmware-update policy, not only the advertised Windows edition.

A replacement is usually the cleanest route when downtime costs more than migration effort. Before buying, inventory the software licenses and data formats that must move, and confirm that the new device has the ports or adapters your workflow needs.

A decision process that avoids expensive surprises

  1. Measure the current PC. Record the exact model, CPU, RAM, storage, firmware mode, TPM status and connected devices.
  2. Classify your work. Mark each task as browser-based, Linux-compatible, Windows-only or dependent on a specialized peripheral.
  3. Check support horizons. Compare the remaining practical life of the current system, the one-year ESU bridge if eligible, ChromeOS Flex certification for the model and the Mint release support date.
  4. Test before erasing. Use trial or live environments and a spare USB drive to validate networking, displays, audio, printing and application access.
  5. Protect the data. Make at least one separate backup, verify that important files open, and export browser bookmarks, password-manager data and application settings through their normal procedures.
  6. Choose the least disruptive supported path. Keep Windows when eligibility can be resolved; choose ChromeOS Flex for a genuinely web-centered workflow, Mint for compatible general desktop use, or a new Windows 11 PC when Windows dependencies are unavoidable.

Migration and recovery checklist

  • Identify documents, photos, email archives, browser profiles, saved games, credentials and application licenses that must be preserved.
  • Use two copies of irreplaceable data, with one copy disconnected from the computer during installation.
  • Write down network names, printer models, display connections and other settings you will need to recreate.
  • Keep the old drive or a system image untouched until the replacement operating system has passed real-world testing.
  • Plan for recovery: retain the installer USB, product keys or account access, and the manufacturer’s recovery information.
  • After migration, apply available operating-system updates, enable the platform’s normal security controls and review application permissions.

Common mistakes and how to avoid them

Assuming minimum RAM proves eligibility

Microsoft’s 4 GB RAM figure is only one requirement. A computer can meet it and still fail on CPU, TPM, firmware, graphics or display compatibility. Always use the complete eligibility check.

Installing on an uncertified ChromeOS Flex model without testing

Google’s guarantee applies to certified models. On other hardware, Wi-Fi, audio, sleep, cameras or special keys may not work as expected. Test from USB and check the model’s certification end date before committing.

Ignoring peripherals on Linux

A desktop can appear functional while a scanner, card reader or printer blocks your actual work. Test every business-critical device, not only the keyboard, display and network.

Treating ESU as a permanent solution

The consumer ESU option is described as one year for eligible devices. Verify local terms and use that period to migrate or replace, rather than postponing the decision indefinitely.

Erasing the only copy of your data

ChromeOS Flex installation media erases the USB drive, and replacing an operating system can erase the internal disk. Back up first, verify the backup, and retain a recovery path until the new system is proven.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Which option should you choose?

Keep the current PC and move to Windows 11 if the failed requirement is genuinely resolvable and Microsoft’s checker confirms support. Choose ChromeOS Flex when the computer is certified, meets its 64-bit/4 GB/16 GB and USB requirements, and your work is predominantly online. Choose Linux Mint when you need a local desktop and your applications and peripherals pass testing; the listed Mint 22.3 release is supported through April 2029. Use Windows 10 ESU only as a verified, short bridge. If Windows-specific software or devices are non-negotiable, a Windows 11-eligible replacement is the dependable path.
