Windows 11’s restrictions are not all alike: some depend on your release channel, some apply only to a particular feature, and one of the clearest app limits belongs specifically to Windows 11 in S mode. Here are three frustrations with the edition, rollout, and geography caveats that determine whether they apply to your PC.
1. Put the taskbar on any screen edge—or make it shorter
For years, Windows 11 offered less taskbar flexibility than earlier Windows versions: standard settings let you move the icons from the center toward the left, but not move the taskbar itself to the top or sides. That limitation is changing. In a May 15, 2026 announcement, Microsoft said taskbar placement at the top, bottom, left, or right of the screen, along with an option for a shorter taskbar, was rolling out to Windows Insiders in the Experimental channel. Check your Windows build and channel before treating the old limitation as universal. If the options are not available on your device, the existing taskbar controls still allow some adjustment: Microsoft documents changing taskbar alignment from centered to left-aligned in Settings. 2. Keep a few specific Windows features and settings
Some complaints are about a particular feature rather than a general inability to customize Windows. Microsoft’s Windows 11 specifications page identifies Math Input Panel as removed; Math Recognizer remains available as an optional feature. If you relied on the old panel, the distinction matters: the original interface is not simply hidden behind a taskbar or personalization setting.

The same specifications page states that desktop wallpaper cannot be roamed to or from a device when you sign in with a Microsoft account. That is a specific synchronization limitation, not a claim that Windows cannot change wallpaper locally. Microsoft documents these changes and limitations on its Windows 11 specifications page.
3. Install apps from outside the Microsoft Store in S mode
Windows 11 in S mode restricts app installation to apps from the Microsoft Store and keeps Microsoft Edge and Bing as the default browser and search engine. This is not a restriction on every Windows 11 PC: S mode is available for Windows 11 Home, and it must be named explicitly when discussing the limitation.

You can switch out of S mode to install apps from other sources, but Microsoft says the change is one-way: you cannot switch back to S mode afterward. That makes the choice a tradeoff between the restricted app source and retaining the option to return to S mode. Check Microsoft’s S mode FAQ for the applicable edition and switching details.

Default-browser controls vary by region
Microsoft described broader default-browser controls and Microsoft Store uninstall options for users in the European Economic Area as part of changes related to the Digital Markets Act. Those changes should not be assumed to apply worldwide, and the 2025 rollout announcement does not verify the current state of every device. Microsoft’s EEA-related announcement

File Explorer’s context menu is also changing
In an August 17, 2026 announcement, Microsoft described faster interactions, more address-bar input support, middle-click folder tabs in additional locations, and a customizable context menu for Insiders. That is an Insider rollout announcement, not confirmation that the changes are present on every retail Windows installation. Microsoft’s File Explorer announcement
