If you mean the brief volume popup that appears when you press a volume key, Windows 11 25H2 has no documented built-in switch to hide it. You can move it instead. If you mean the volume icon on the taskbar, that is a separate control and can be hidden with a supported Group Policy setting.
First, identify which volume control you mean
- Volume on-screen indicator (OSD): A popup that appears briefly when you change volume with a keyboard key or hardware control.
- System-tray volume icon: The volume control in the taskbar’s notification area.
These are distinct interface elements. Microsoft’s HideSCAVolume policy applies to the system-tray icon; it does not hide the on-screen indicator.
Move the volume popup in Windows 11 25H2
Windows 11 coverage reports that 25H2 includes a setting to reposition hardware on-screen indicators, including volume. It does not report a hide option. Open Settings > System > Notifications > Position of on-screen indicators and choose one of the available placements:

This changes where the indicator appears, not whether it appears. The positioning choices are reported for Windows 11 versions 25H2 and 24H2 by Windows Central.

Hide the taskbar’s volume icon with Group Policy
If your goal is to remove the volume control from the system notification area, Microsoft documents the HideSCAVolume policy for Windows 11 version 21H2 and later, including 25H2, on Pro, Enterprise, Education, and IoT Enterprise editions. It hides the tray icon—not the volume popup.
- Open the Local Group Policy Editor.
- Go to User Configuration > Administrative Templates > Start Menu and Taskbar.
- Open Remove the volume control icon and set it to Enabled.
Microsoft documents the policy’s supported editions and effect in its taskbar policy settings and Policy CSP reference. If you later want the icon back, return to the same policy and set it to Not Configured or Disabled.

Use Quick Settings if you hide the tray icon
Hiding the taskbar icon does not remove access to volume controls entirely. Microsoft Support describes Quick Settings as a place to access volume controls; open it from the taskbar’s network, sound, or battery area. This is an alternative way to reach the controls, not a way to suppress the on-screen indicator. See Microsoft’s Windows 11 taskbar guidance.

Microsoft’s Windows 11 25H2 Group Policy reference confirms that policy documentation is available, but it does not establish a policy for hiding the volume OSD. A PowerToys request for a hide-volume-OSD feature was closed as not planned; that does not prove that every third-party utility is ineffective, but the sources cited here do not establish a current, tested utility that reliably hides the indicator. Avoid treating registry edits or third-party tools as verified 25H2 fixes.
