Short answer: There is no currently verified, Microsoft-supported CMD command that reliably upgrades an unsupported Windows 10 PC to Windows 11 version 26H2 without USB. The often-mentioned setup.exe /product server switch is an unofficial workaround; available evidence does not establish that it works for this upgrade or preserves files and apps. If the PC is eligible, use Windows Update or Microsoft’s Installation Assistant. You can also launch Windows Setup from within Windows without booting from USB, but Microsoft’s documented upgrade route does not make unsupported hardware eligible.
What the CMD method can—and cannot—promise
The command commonly suggested for this task is setup.exe /product server. Microsoft’s current public installation guidance does not document this switch. User-posted discussions mention it, but do not establish that it bypasses Windows 11 requirements reliably on a Windows 10 PC, particularly with Windows 11 version 26H2.
Microsoft lists Windows 11 version 26H2 as generally available from September 29, 2026, with OS build 26300. Older reports about a command-line workaround do not verify its behavior with this release. There is no dependable basis to promise that the command will start Setup, get past compatibility checks, or keep your apps and files. Treat it as unverified, not as a supported procedure.

| Method | Eligibility | USB needed? | Can keep files and apps? | Microsoft support and confidence |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Windows Update or Installation Assistant | Requires a PC that meets Windows 11 requirements; Microsoft recommends Windows Update for the upgrade offer. | No | These are upgrade paths for eligible devices. | Documented by Microsoft. The Installation Assistant does not offer installation when the PC fails its requirements. |
| Run Windows installation media from within Windows | Microsoft documents this in-place Setup route, but it does not make ineligible hardware eligible. | No bootable USB required if you can access the media within Windows. | Setup presents choices to keep personal files and apps, keep files only, or keep nothing. | Documented by Microsoft as an installation method. Unsupported hardware can still leave the resulting installation unsupported. |
setup.exe /product server workaround |
Behavior on unsupported PCs is not authoritatively established. | Potentially no bootable USB if Setup is launched from Windows, but this specific command workflow is unverified. | Not established for this command and target upgrade. | Not documented in Microsoft’s current public guidance; reliability with Windows 11 26H2 is unverified. |
Check the supported route first
- Run Microsoft PC Health Check and review any compatibility issues it reports.
- If the PC meets Windows 11 requirements, check Settings > Update & Security > Windows Update in Windows 10. Microsoft recommends waiting for Windows Update to offer Windows 11 to an eligible device.
- If the PC is eligible but Windows Update has not offered the upgrade, Microsoft’s Installation Assistant is another supported option. It only proceeds when it determines the PC meets hardware requirements.
If these tools say the PC is ineligible, the standard Microsoft upgrade path is not available on that hardware. A Windows license does not change the hardware eligibility check.

How “without USB” works with Microsoft’s documented Setup route
“Without USB” can mean running installation media from the Windows 10 desktop rather than booting the PC from a USB drive. Microsoft documents launching installation media from within the current Windows installation and choosing what to retain in Setup. This is different from a clean installation started by booting from media, which erases the existing drive.
- Back up important files and make sure you know how to restore your current system before beginning an OS installation.
- While signed in to Windows 10, access the Windows installation media from within Windows and launch Setup. Do not boot the PC from that media if your goal is an in-place upgrade.
- When Setup presents the available choices, select the retention option that matches your needs: keep personal files and apps, keep files only, or keep nothing. Available choices can depend on the installation.
This explains the documented no-USB distinction; it is not a validated command recipe for bypassing eligibility on an unsupported PC. The fact that Setup can offer retention choices on a supported upgrade does not prove that the CMD workaround will preserve data.

Understand the support and security trade-off
Microsoft ended Windows 10 support on October 14, 2025. Microsoft says an unsupported PC can continue to start and run, but will no longer receive Microsoft software updates, including security updates, or technical support. Consumers and organizations may be eligible to enroll in the paid Extended Security Updates program for Critical and Important security updates; that is a limited program, not a return to ordinary Windows 10 support.

Microsoft warns that installing Windows 11 on a device that does not meet minimum system requirements can leave it unsupported. Do not assume that an installation will receive updates or technical support simply because it completes. Microsoft’s guidance for a device that fails the Installation Assistant’s requirements is to leave it on Windows 10.

Back up before attempting an installation
Save important files and confirm you can recover the current system before changing operating systems. Microsoft specifically warns that booting from installation media performs a fresh installation and erases the existing drive contents; it recommends backing up necessary files first, for example to an external backup device. An in-place upgrade is a different process, but it is still prudent to have a recovery plan rather than relying on an unverified workaround.
