A PC that runs Windows 10 Pro does not necessarily meet Windows 11’s requirements. Windows 10 Home and Pro support ended on October 14, 2025, so check your PC’s upgrade eligibility and security-update options rather than treating the Windows 10 installation minimums as a measure of whether it is ready today.

Can your PC still run Windows 10 Pro?

End of support does not mean Windows 10 stops working. It means Microsoft no longer provides regular security updates, quality fixes, feature updates, or technical support for standard Windows 10 Home and Pro. Version 22H2 was the final general release for these editions. Microsoft explains the Windows 10 end-of-support date and what it means.

The exact Windows 10 Pro installation minimums are not confirmed here. Microsoft has a Windows 10 Minimum Hardware Requirements document, but its contents could not be verified for this article. That means a numeric Windows 10 Pro checklist would risk presenting incorrect CPU, memory, storage, graphics, firmware, or display figures. Do not use Windows 11’s figures as a substitute: they apply to Windows 11, not Windows 10 Pro.

Check whether your PC can move to Windows 11

Windows 11 eligibility is a separate question from whether your computer can install or run Windows 10 Pro. Microsoft’s current baseline for Windows 11 includes:

  • A compatible, approved 64-bit processor running at 1 GHz or faster, with at least two cores.
  • At least 4 GB of RAM and 64 GB of storage.
  • UEFI firmware that is Secure Boot capable, and TPM 2.0.
  • DirectX 12-compatible graphics with a WDDM 2.0 driver.
  • A display larger than 9 inches diagonally, at 720p or higher resolution, with 8 bits per color channel.

For an upgrade through Windows Update, the PC must also be running Windows 10 version 2004 or later. These baseline specifications do not guarantee that a particular computer is eligible: processor approval and the device’s configuration matter too. See Microsoft’s Windows 11 specifications.

Use Microsoft’s eligibility check

  1. Open Settings > Update & Security > Windows Update on your Windows 10 PC and check whether Windows Update offers a Windows 11 upgrade.
  2. For a more direct compatibility assessment, use Microsoft’s PC Health Check tool and follow its result for your device.
  3. If the check says the PC is not eligible, use the specific reason it reports rather than assuming that adding RAM or storage will solve it. The processor, firmware, TPM, and other requirements may also affect eligibility.

Choose a support path for your Windows 10 Pro PC

Microsoft’s transition guidance points Windows 10 users toward checking for a Windows 11 upgrade, enrolling in Extended Security Updates (ESU) if eligible, or moving to a Windows 11 PC. Which path makes sense depends on your device, your need for continuing security updates, and the cost and effort involved.

Option When it may fit What to check
Upgrade to Windows 11 Your PC passes Microsoft’s eligibility check. Confirm the offer in Windows Update and that your device meets the Windows 11 requirements.
Enroll in ESU You need more time with a Windows 10 PC that cannot move to Windows 11 now. Check Microsoft’s current eligibility, enrollment options, and timing; availability can vary by region.
Move to a Windows 11 PC Your current device cannot upgrade, or replacing it better fits your needs. Consider the device’s Windows 11 compatibility, manufacturer support, cost, and the time needed to move your files and apps.

ESU provides critical and important security updates for eligible enrolled systems. It does not restore standard Windows 10 feature updates or general technical support. Check Microsoft’s current ESU guidance for eligibility and enrollment details.

Should you upgrade the hardware?

Do not assume that replacing one component will make an older PC eligible for Windows 11. The available upgrades depend on the computer model, and a change to RAM or storage will not address an unsupported processor, firmware limitation, or missing security feature. Microsoft recommends checking with the PC manufacturer or a hardware expert to confirm whether changes can bring a specific device into compliance. Review Microsoft’s Windows 11 requirements before deciding.

If replacement is the practical option, it is not automatic or inevitable: weigh the device’s upgradeability and support against the cost and effort of ESU or a new Windows 11 PC. Make the choice based on your own device and how long you need to keep using it.
