There is no single best LAN driver for every Windows 10 PC. The right Ethernet driver depends on the network controller in your computer, and built-in Ethernet may use a driver customized by the PC or motherboard maker. Start with support for your exact computer model; use Intel or Realtek downloads only when the package explicitly supports your controller and Windows version.
Where to download the right Windows 10 LAN driver
For Ethernet built into a laptop or desktop, visit the manufacturer’s support page and search by the exact model or serial number. Select the driver for the computer’s Ethernet or network adapter, then check that it supports Windows 10 and your system architecture. Microsoft’s Ethernet troubleshooting guidance recommends getting the driver from the PC manufacturer when available.
This matters because a computer or motherboard maker may customize or replace the component vendor’s driver for an integrated connection. Intel explicitly cautions that its driver may not be the right package for a built-in connection; the PC maker’s package is the safer first choice when offered for the exact machine. If you have identified a separately installed adapter or its exact controller, check the controller maker’s official download page and match the listed hardware and operating system. Intel’s page lists supported adapters and a driver release; the version shown there is page-specific, not a universal recommendation for all Windows 10 PCs. Intel also publishes Windows 10 support information for Intel Ethernet adapters.

Realtek’s official Ethernet software listing covers PCIe FE/GbE and higher-speed controller families. A family listing does not establish that one package fits every Realtek-equipped computer. Confirm that your particular controller is supported, and follow any OEM instructions for your PC.
How to identify the Ethernet hardware before downloading
- Find the exact PC or motherboard model. Use the model label or the system information shown by the manufacturer’s support utility or support page. Search that model on the manufacturer’s official support site.
- Check the installed adapter if the model page is unclear. In Windows, open Device Manager, expand Network adapters, and note the Ethernet adapter name. If the adapter is listed as unknown or has a warning icon, use its hardware details to help identify it, or consult the computer maker’s support page.
- Match the download to both device and operating system. Confirm the supported controller, Windows 10 version or edition, and 32-bit or 64-bit architecture where the page distinguishes them. Do not choose a package just because its title contains “LAN” or “Windows 10.”
- Read the package instructions. Some downloads are installers; others may require an installation method specified by the manufacturer. Use the maker’s steps rather than assuming every driver installs the same way.
How to install a downloaded driver
Use the installation instructions provided with the specific package. If it is an installer, open the downloaded file and follow its prompts. If the package provides driver files rather than an installer, use the manufacturer’s instructions or Windows Device Manager to update the adapter and select the extracted driver location. Restart if the installer or manufacturer requests it, then check whether Ethernet connects.

Before removing a working driver, have the replacement available. Microsoft advises: “Before uninstalling, make sure you have drivers available as a backup.” Its Ethernet connection troubleshooting page describes uninstalling and reinstalling an adapter driver as a troubleshooting step.

What to do if the PC is offline
- On a different computer with internet access, open the official support page for the offline PC’s exact model.
- Download the matching Ethernet driver and, if practical, keep a copy of the installer and its instructions.
- Copy the files to a USB flash drive and connect it to the offline PC.
- Transfer the files, then install the driver using the package instructions.
If the computer has no Ethernet port, Microsoft notes that a USB-to-Ethernet adapter may be an option. Check the adapter’s compatibility with the computer, Windows version, and available USB port; it is separate hardware and does not identify or replace the driver required by built-in Ethernet.

Common download mistakes to avoid
- Using a generic driver based only on Windows 10: drivers support particular hardware, and the OS name alone does not confirm compatibility.
- Ignoring the computer maker’s package: OEM drivers may include changes for integrated network hardware.
- Uninstalling before saving a backup: if the network driver is removed while the PC is offline, you may need another computer and removable storage to restore connectivity.
- Assuming a vendor family page fits every device: verify the exact controller against the vendor’s supported hardware list.
- Relying on an unverified driver-updater download: use the PC maker’s or controller maker’s official support page rather than a third-party utility that selects packages for you.
Windows 10 support status
Microsoft says Windows 10 support ended on October 14, 2025. Its support guidance states that free software updates through Windows Update, technical assistance, and security fixes are no longer provided, and recommends moving to Windows 11. A correct LAN driver can address adapter compatibility or connectivity, but it does not restore Windows 10 support.
