A .WIN file has no single universal format. Its organization depends on the application or recordkeeping system that created it. In the best-documented technical use, seismic WIN data is arranged in self-contained, one-second units with timestamp and channel data; a FoxPro .WIN file instead stores window settings. Identify the file’s source before trying to interpret or open it.
What does “WIN file” mean?
“WIN file” can describe unrelated things that share a filename extension or label. The extension alone does not establish what the file contains or which program can read it. FileInfo lists uses including FoxPro window settings, GameMaker game asset packages, legacy Windows backup files, and Team Win TWRP backups (FileInfo’s WIN file reference).
There are also non-file-format uses of “WIN”: historical or agency-specific recordkeeping systems may use WIN as a name for a filing category or record. Those uses do not describe a general-purpose digital file format.

How is seismic WIN data organized?
The technical layout documented by Nagoya University is a sequence of one-second data units. Each unit has its own absolute time, so it is self-contained rather than relying on the preceding second to establish its timestamp. Within a unit, channel blocks carry the measurements for individual channels (Nagoya University’s WIN format description).

One-second units and timestamps
In the documented disk layout, the first four bytes of a one-second unit specify the total size of that unit, including those four bytes. A following block begins with six bytes representing the date and time. Multi-byte integers are stored in big-endian order. These byte-level details apply to the seismic format described on that page, not to every file ending in .WIN.
Channel blocks and their order
Each channel block is independent, so channels do not have to appear in a fixed order. Channel blocks can also differ in size or sampling rate. The documented block includes a channel identifier, a sample-size indicator, the sampling rate, the first data value, and subsequent sample differences.

Why the channel table matters
The WIN data alone does not provide all the information needed to interpret measurements. A separate channel table supplies station names, coordinates, component names, and conversion factors. Values are stored as integers; the relevant conversion factor is needed to express them in physical units. Without the matching metadata, the measurements may not be interpretable even if the data bytes can be read.

In FoxPro, a .WIN file stores window definitions and settings, such as window positions, sizes, and state. The cited reference describes saving these layouts with the SAVE WINDOW command and restoring them with RESTORE WINDOW. It also reports that Microsoft discontinued FoxPro in 2007; that date is reported by the secondary reference rather than established here through a current Microsoft source (FileInfo’s WIN file reference).

A FoxPro settings file is therefore not organized like seismic WIN data: it represents application window configuration, not timestamped measurements and channel blocks.
Other uses of the WIN name
- GameMaker: FileInfo lists WIN among extensions used for GameMaker Studio game asset packages. The extension by itself does not identify the specific game or establish that the file can be opened as a standalone document.
- Legacy Windows backups: FileInfo also lists older Windows backup files. Their handling depends on the backup’s origin and the software that created it.
- Team Win TWRP backups: FileInfo lists backup files associated with Team Win Recovery Project (TWRP). These are recovery-related data, not seismic files or FoxPro settings.
For these software-specific cases, use the creating application or a workflow documented for that application rather than choosing a program from the suffix alone.

When WIN refers to a filing system rather than a file format
Historical WIN Summaries
A 1974 National Bureau of Standards symposium report describes a corporate hard-copy file of WIN Summaries. Copies were held at eight divisions; summaries were arranged chronologically within 18 broad subject categories and were retrieved primarily by WIN Summary number. This describes a particular historical information-retrieval system, not the structure of a modern digital .WIN file (1974 NBS symposium report).

Washington State DOSH records
A Washington State Department of Labor & Industries Division of Occupational Safety and Health (DOSH) manual refers to the RMS-WIN file as the official file for consultation and technical-assistance documentation. That is an agency-specific recordkeeping workflow, not a general definition of the WIN extension (Washington State DOSH Consultation Manual).

How to identify your WIN file safely
- Check where it came from. Note the application, device, game, backup process, or organization that created or supplied it.
- Look for companion files and context. A seismic WIN data file may need its channel table; a backup or game package may rely on the originating software.
- Match the file to documented software. Check the creator’s instructions for that specific file type instead of assuming that every
.WINfile has the same opener. - Avoid changing or renaming the original. Keep an untouched copy while identifying the format, especially when the file may be a backup or scientific data.
If you cannot establish the provenance, the reliable answer is that the extension is ambiguous—not that one particular program is the correct opener.
