Not all flip phones are going to stop working. A flip phone’s future depends on its exact model, the mobile network it uses, and whether your carrier supports its LTE voice calling. Older phones that rely on 2G or 3G may lose service when those networks close; some 4G phones can also be affected if they cannot make calls over that carrier’s LTE network using VoLTE.

Why some flip phones will stop working

“Flip phone” describes a handset’s shape, not its cellular technology. A flip phone may use 2G, 3G, 4G LTE, or newer networks. When a carrier retires an older network, phones that depend on it can lose the ability to call, text, or use mobile data.

Voice calling needs a separate check from mobile data. A phone might show a 4G or 5G indicator because its data connection uses LTE or 5G, while its calls still rely on an older network. If that older network closes and the phone cannot make voice calls over LTE with the carrier’s VoLTE service, it may no longer be able to make ordinary calls.

Even a phone advertised as 4G may not work on every carrier. It needs the right network bands and compatible voice technology for that provider. A label on the box or a 4G icon is not enough to confirm compatibility.

When are 2G and 3G networks shutting down?

There is no single worldwide shutdown date. Network retirement schedules differ by country and provider, so a date announced by one carrier does not establish when another carrier will switch off service.

Country or network Published retirement information What it means for flip phones
United Kingdom The UK Government says mobile operators will switch off 2G between 2029 and 2033. UK Government guidance 2G-only devices will need upgrading to 4G- or 5G-capable devices to maintain connectivity.
Mint Mobile Mint Mobile lists August 3, 2026, as its 2G shutdown date. Mint Mobile guidance This is a Mint-specific date. The carrier says affected 2G/3G phones and some older 4G phones without VoLTE may lose service, including emergency calling.
Cellcom Cellcom says it retired 3G in 2023 and 2G on December 4, 2024. Cellcom guidance Non-VoLTE phones may be affected on Cellcom’s network.
Verizon Verizon says it completed its CDMA retirement by December 31, 2022. Verizon guidance Verizon lists 1XRTT CDMA, 3G CDMA, and 4G devices without VoLTE among the affected device types.
Hong Kong The communications regulator reported that local providers had ceased 2G as of its July 24, 2026 notice; CMHK had ceased 3G on June 30, 2025, and another operator had permission to begin ending 3G from October 9, 2026. Office of the Communications Authority notice The regulator warns that some earlier 4G handsets may not be able to make emergency calls using VoLTE after 2G/3G cessation.

These dates apply to the named country or network only. To know when your phone may be affected, check your own carrier’s current notices and compatibility information.

  • COMPATIBILITY — Works with all devices that have a USB-C port.
  • INTEGRATED MICROPHONE — A built-in microphone precisely captures your voice while you’re on the phone, taking a FaceTime call, or summoning Siri — so you’re always heard loud and clear.

How to check whether your flip phone will still work

  1. Find the exact model and carrier. Look in the phone’s settings, on its packaging, or on the device label for the model number and variant. Identify the carrier whose SIM or service you use; the same handset name can cover variants with different network support.
  2. Run the carrier’s compatibility check. Use the provider’s device checker, entering the phone’s IMEI when requested. T-Mobile, for example, directs customers to its IMEI Status Check and says a device must support the network’s frequency band and technology.
  3. Confirm VoLTE support and activation. Check the phone’s settings for a calling option such as VoLTE, 4G Calling, or Advanced Calling, if available. Install any available software updates, then ask the carrier whether that exact model and variant is approved for VoLTE on its network. Mint Mobile provides setting guidance and recommends updating software.
  4. Ask specifically about voice and emergency calls. Do not stop at a checker result that confirms data access. Ask whether the model can make ordinary voice calls and emergency calls after the local 2G or 3G retirement. Rogers notes that some 4G/5G phones may still depend on 2G for voice if VoLTE is unsupported. Rogers network guidance
  5. Recheck before switching carriers or buying a replacement. Compatibility depends on the provider and can change as networks and approved-device lists change. Confirm the exact phone variant with the carrier that will provide service.

Will your old flip phone still call 911 or 999?

Do not assume it will. Emergency-call capability can depend on the same network technology and carrier compatibility as ordinary calls. A phone that loses access to a retired network may lose emergency calling too; Mint Mobile says this may affect certain devices on its network. In Hong Kong, the regulator has warned that some earlier 4G handsets may not make emergency calls using VoLTE after 2G/3G cessation.

Ask your carrier about emergency calls for the exact make, model, and variant—not just whether the phone can connect to LTE or display a signal. Check again if you move the device to another provider.

What to look for in a replacement flip phone

If your current phone fails the carrier’s check, a replacement basic phone may preserve the familiar flip-phone form factor. Compare the exact model and variant against these criteria:

  • Carrier approval: Confirm the IMEI or compatibility-check result for the carrier you intend to use.
  • Network support: Check that it supports the LTE bands used where you live and travel.
  • Voice calling: Verify VoLTE support and carrier approval, including emergency calling.
  • Software: Check that the phone can receive required updates and that its software is current.
  • Practical needs: Confirm that it has the calling, accessibility, and other features you rely on.

Cellcom names the Orbic Journey R and TCL Flip 2 as flip-style options supporting newer technology on its network, and says they do not require a data plan. That does not establish compatibility on other carriers or current availability elsewhere; verify the exact model with your own provider before buying.
