Not immediately. AT&T announced on October 13, 2026 that it agreed to sell AT&T Mexico to Grupo Televisa and Fintech Holdings for $2 billion in cash at closing. The transaction is expected to close in the first quarter of 2027, subject to customary conditions and Mexican regulatory approvals. Until then, AT&T says the announcement has no impact on service, including service for customers traveling to Mexico from the United States.
Your current contract, device-installment balance, and phone number therefore remain governed by the documents and service you already have. The sale announcement does not cancel a contract, forgive a balance, accelerate remaining payments, or assign you a new number. Post-closing branding, billing, prices, promotions, and support arrangements have not yet been published.
What AT&T announced and when it takes effect
On October 13, 2026, AT&T announced an agreement to sell AT&T Mexico to Grupo Televisa and Fintech Holdings. The stated consideration is $2 billion in cash at closing. AT&T expects the transaction to close during the first quarter of 2027, but that is a target rather than a completed date. The parties still need to satisfy customary closing conditions and obtain Mexican regulatory approvals.
An announced transaction is not the same as a completed transfer. Until the closing occurs, AT&T Mexico continues operating under its existing ownership and customer arrangements. The announcement itself does not give customers a new plan, new biller, new contract, or new phone number.

AT&T’s customer FAQ uses unusually broad language: “There are no impacts to your service related to this announcement – including for customers traveling to Mexico from the U.S.” That statement describes the period following the announcement while the sale is pending; it does not publish the terms of service after closing.
What happens to your contract before closing?
Your signed agreement remains the practical reference
The Mexican regulator’s mobile-contract page lists AT&T among providers whose adhesion contracts can be consulted. Neither the sale announcement nor AT&T’s customer FAQ says that existing customer contracts are cancelled, rewritten, or automatically replaced. Until the companies issue an approved, contractually valid migration notice, use the contract you signed and the current regulator-registered terms as your reference.
This does not mean every contractual detail is frozen forever. A later notice could explain a lawful assignment, a new billing entity, or revised service terms. Such a notice would need to identify who is responsible for the service, when a change takes effect, and how it affects your rights. Nothing in the October 13 announcement supplies those details.

Do you have to sign a new contract?
No new signature requirement has been announced. Do not assume that an email, text message, or sales call asking you to accept a new term is mandatory merely because the acquisition was announced. Before accepting anything, check whether it is an optional plan change or an official migration notice, identify the legal provider named in the document, and read the sections covering term, price, cancellation, promotions, and equipment payments.
If a future notice asks for consent, save both the notice and your original agreement. The effect of signing depends on the exact language and effective date; the current sale announcement does not establish that customers must enter a new term.
What happens to a remaining phone balance?
Device financing continues under the existing arrangement
AT&T Mexico’s current postpaid terms allow a customer either to use a personally owned device or to finance a device over 24, 30, or 36 months. The same terms state that deferred-equipment charges continue until the equipment is fully paid.

Because the acquisition announcement does not promise cancellation or forgiveness, keep making the scheduled device and service payments under your present arrangement. The announcement also does not say that the remaining device balance becomes immediately due. A sale by itself is not evidence that you owe the entire unpaid amount at once.
What to check on your bill
- Separate the recurring service charge from the equipment installment or deferred-equipment charge.
- Record the number of installments already paid and the remaining amount shown by your account.
- Save the equipment agreement, purchase receipt, and recent bills in case the future owner changes the billing platform.
- Continue using the payment method and due date in your current agreement unless an authenticated, legally effective notice changes them.
The published terms do not say whether a future owner will display the balance in a different format. They do establish that equipment charges continue until the device is fully paid, so retain your own records rather than relying only on a future online account.
Will your AT&T Mexico phone number change?
You should not receive a new number solely because AT&T Mexico is being sold. The transaction announcement contains no instruction to renumber customers, and AT&T’s service-impact FAQ says there are no current impacts related to the announcement.
Number portability protects you if you change provider
The Mexican telecommunications regulator describes portability as a user’s right to keep the same telephone number when changing concessionaire or telephone-service provider, free of charge and within 24 hours. Its Spanish statement is: “La Portabilidad es el Derecho de los usuarios de conservar el mismo número telefónico al cambiarse de concesionario o prestador de servicios de telefonía de manera gratuita y en 24 horas.”
Portability is relevant if you later decide to leave AT&T Mexico; it is not a requirement to leave because a sale was announced. Keep control of the number and account information you use for banking, two-factor authentication, work contacts, and recovery services. If a future migration gives you a choice of providers, ask for the number-porting procedure and timing in writing before accepting it.
What is still unknown after closing?
The announcement and current FAQ do not publish the customer-facing operating model that will apply after the transaction closes. In particular, they do not establish:

- EASY ACTIVATION: Bring your own phone and activate your SIM on the Tello website; check your phone compatibility and coverage maps before purchasing to confirm service in your area
- the post-closing brand name or whether the AT&T name will remain in customer-facing use;
- which company will issue bills or operate the payment system;
- new or continuing plan names, monthly prices, data allowances, minutes, or overage rules;
- how existing discounts, promotional pricing, loyalty benefits, or bundled offers will be treated;
- whether customers will receive a replacement contract or an amendment;
- how an unpaid device balance will appear or which entity will collect it;
- customer-support phone numbers, stores, apps, websites, or authentication procedures; and
- any change to coverage, roaming, or network arrangements.
These are unresolved commercial and operational details, not evidence that a change will occur. Do not treat an unverified social-media post or a sales message as proof of a new price, coverage area, contract term, or balance policy.
What you should do while the sale is pending
- Download your records. Save your current contract, the latest bills, device-financing schedule, promotion terms, and account contact details. Keep copies outside the carrier’s app so you can refer to them if the login or billing system changes.
- Keep paying normally. Continue service and equipment payments according to your existing due dates. Do not stop a payment or pay the full remaining balance merely because the acquisition was announced.
- Check official notices. Read messages delivered through the contact details already associated with your account and compare any claimed change with your contract. An authentic notice should identify the effective date, responsible company, and affected terms.
- Ask precise questions before accepting a change. If you are offered a new plan or agreement, ask whether it changes the monthly price, data or minutes, contract length, promotion, device balance, cancellation rights, roaming, or number-porting rights.
- Protect account access. Keep your account email, recovery method, and security information current. Your number may be used for authentication even if the carrier arrangement changes.
- Do not port out solely because of the headline. The sale is pending and AT&T says current service is unaffected. Consider another provider only after comparing the actual terms offered and confirming how your number and device balance will be handled.
How to evaluate a post-closing offer
If the proposed owners publish options, compare the documents line by line rather than choosing on the brand name alone. These are the material axes identified by the current information:
| Item to compare | Why it matters |
|---|---|
| Monthly price | Determines whether the recurring cost changes after any introductory period. |
| Included data and minutes | A lower price may include less domestic usage or different overage rules. |
| Contract term | Shows whether accepting the offer creates a new commitment or leaves you month to month. |
| Remaining device balance | Confirms the unpaid amount, installment length, and whether the existing schedule continues. |
| Promotion continuity | Establishes whether discounts, credits, or bundled benefits survive the migration. |
| Coverage and roaming | Reveals any geographic or international-use differences that matter to your routine. |
| Cancellation terms | Shows fees, notice requirements, and what happens to an unpaid device. |
| Number-porting process | Explains how to retain your number if you select another provider. |
Request the complete terms, not just a headline price. Keep the offer, acceptance record, and final confirmation together with your old contract so you can prove which terms you accepted and when.

When to contact support or the regulator
Contact AT&T through the official account channels you already use if a bill changes before closing, a device installment disappears, or a message claims your service will be suspended because of the sale. Ask for the change in writing and retain the response. If a future provider disputes your contract, balance, or number-porting right, your saved agreement and bills will help establish the history of the account.
The regulator’s contract and portability information is also relevant when you need to verify your rights in Mexico. A portability request should preserve your number when you change provider under the regulator’s stated free, 24-hour mechanism. That right is separate from the corporate transaction and remains the tool to use if you voluntarily switch services.
Bottom line for AT&T Mexico customers
The acquisition announcement does not itself change your AT&T Mexico plan, contract, device balance, or telephone number. The sale is expected in the first quarter of 2027 but still requires approvals. Continue your existing payments, preserve your records, and wait for a formal customer notice before deciding whether to accept new terms. When post-closing details appear, compare price, allowances, term, balance, promotions, coverage, cancellation rules, and portability instead of assuming any of them from the announcement alone.
