Not on the original Nintendo Switch, based on Nintendo’s current announcement. The next Zelda game Nintendo has announced that is relevant to this question is The Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time, a return of the Nintendo 64 classic scheduled for November 5, 2026 on Nintendo Switch 2.
Nintendo describes this release as exclusive to Switch 2. That means the announcement does not promise a version for the first-generation Nintendo Switch. If you own the original console, you should treat Switch 2 as the announced platform unless Nintendo later publishes different compatibility information.
The short answer: Switch 2 is the announced platform
Nintendo’s current announcement identifies The Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time as the relevant upcoming release. It is not a newly announced mainline sequel. It is the Nintendo 64 classic returning for a new generation, with a listed release date of November 5, 2026.

Nintendo says the game is “reborn exclusively for Nintendo Switch 2.” The announcement therefore establishes Switch 2 as the platform for this release. It does not announce an edition for the original Nintendo Switch, nor does it promise that the older console will run the game through backward compatibility, streaming or an upgrade program.

Because the announcement is about a returning classic, it is more accurate to call this the next announced Zelda release relevant to the question than to call it the next brand-new mainline Zelda installment.
What game has actually been announced?
A return of Ocarina of Time
Ocarina of Time originally appeared on Nintendo 64. Nintendo’s 2026 announcement presents the upcoming version as that classic returning for a new generation. The wording matters: it describes a re-release or renewed presentation of an established game, not an entirely new story in the Zelda series.
That distinction prevents two common misunderstandings. First, the announcement should not be read as confirmation of a new numbered or otherwise new mainline adventure. Second, the fact that the title is familiar does not make its platform status ambiguous. Nintendo still identifies this release as a Switch 2 exclusive.
Why “next Zelda game” needs a qualification
Nintendo’s official material reviewed for this question establishes the Ocarina of Time return and its platform. It does not establish whether Nintendo has separately announced another new mainline Zelda project in a different announcement. The careful conclusion is therefore: this is the next Zelda game Nintendo has announced that answers the reader’s platform question, not a claim that no other Zelda announcement exists anywhere.
Original Nintendo Switch versus Nintendo Switch 2
“Nintendo Switch” can refer to an entire product family in casual conversation, but the announcement distinguishes two consoles. That distinction determines what you should plan to buy or use.

| Console | Status for the announced Ocarina of Time release | What the announcement establishes |
|---|---|---|
| Original Nintendo Switch | Not announced as a platform | Nintendo does not promise a version, backward compatibility, streaming option or upgrade path for this console. |
| Nintendo Switch 2 | Announced exclusive platform | Nintendo identifies Switch 2 as the console for the November 5, 2026 release. |
The first row is deliberately phrased as “not announced,” rather than as a technical test result. The official wording says the game is exclusive to Switch 2, so owners of the original console should not assume that their hardware will be supported. Only a later Nintendo statement could change that expectation.
When is it coming out?
Nintendo Australia’s 2026 anniversary listing gives November 5, 2026 for Ocarina of Time on Nintendo Switch 2. That is the date currently attached to the announcement.
The available announcement does not provide a different regional schedule, launch time or staggered rollout. Readers outside Australia should check Nintendo’s official listing for their market as the date approaches rather than assuming that a local release hour or calendar date has been specified. The confirmed information here is the date shown by Nintendo Australia and the Switch 2 platform designation.
Since the date is in the future, details can still be added or revised by Nintendo. A changed date would require a new official announcement; until then, November 5, 2026 is the published target.
What Nintendo’s “exclusive” wording means for Switch owners
It sets the announced hardware requirement
When Nintendo calls a game exclusive to a console, the practical planning assumption is that the named console is required. For this release, that console is Nintendo Switch 2. Someone who owns only the original Switch should not buy the game expecting the older system to be supported based on the information currently available.

It is not a promise about every technical detail
“Exclusive to Switch 2” answers the platform question, but it does not answer every purchase or technical question. The announcement does not say whether the title will be sold digitally, physically, or in both formats. It also does not state a price, whether an existing copy of Ocarina of Time would qualify for an upgrade, or whether any cloud, subscription or other access method will be offered.
Those omissions should not be filled with assumptions. A game can have a confirmed console and date while its retail format, pricing and account requirements remain unpublished.
What has not been announced yet
Readers deciding whether to wait or plan a console purchase should separate confirmed facts from details that are still open:
- Original Switch support: not promised. The announcement identifies the release as Switch 2 exclusive.
- Physical edition: no cartridge or other physical format is identified in the announcement.
- Digital purchase method: the available material does not specify a store listing or purchase option.
- Price: no launch price is established.
- Upgrade eligibility: Nintendo does not say that an older version can be upgraded for Switch 2.
- Save-data behavior: no transfer or cross-console save policy is stated.
- Performance features: the announcement does not specify resolution, frame rate, visual changes, controls or other technical enhancements.
- Regional timing: the cited date comes from Nintendo Australia’s listing; other markets may publish their own scheduling details.
None of these unanswered points changes the platform conclusion. They simply identify questions that need separate official confirmation before you make a detailed buying plan.
How to decide what to do if you own the original Switch
If you only want to play this release
Plan around Nintendo Switch 2. The official announcement does not provide a supported path on the original console. Waiting for a later compatibility statement is reasonable if you are not ready to move to new hardware, but there is no current basis for promising that the older Switch will run this game.

If you are considering a Switch 2 purchase
The announced title is a reason to evaluate Switch 2, but the announcement alone does not establish the console’s price, availability or a bundle containing the game. Treat those as separate shopping questions. Before buying, confirm that the listing is for Nintendo Switch 2 and that the seller’s release information matches Nintendo’s current announcement.
If you already own another version of Ocarina of Time
Do not assume that ownership transfers automatically. Nintendo has not stated whether the 2026 release is an upgrade, a separate product, or part of an existing access program. Wait for Nintendo’s product-specific instructions before counting an earlier purchase toward the new release.
Why this is not confirmation of a new mainline Zelda sequel
The phrase “next Zelda game” often suggests an original adventure following the series’ most recent major installment. That is not what this announcement says. Nintendo describes the project as the Nintendo 64 classic returning for a new generation.
Calling it a classic return is useful for setting expectations about the type of release, but it does not predict how Nintendo may present the game technically. The available announcement does not specify whether the version includes visual changes, new features, restored content or other revisions. Those details should be treated as unknown until Nintendo publishes them.

Use Nintendo’s own product information when making a final decision, especially because the launch date is in the future. Check the following items in the official listing for your region:

- One player can use a Joy-Con in each hand
- Two players can each take one
- Multiple Joy-Con can be employed by numerous people for a variety of gameplay options (additional Joy-Con sold separately)
- Slip a set of Joy-Con into a Joy-Con grip accessory, mirroring a more traditional controller. Or, select an optional Nintendo Switch Pro Controller.
- Confirm that the title is listed for Nintendo Switch 2, not simply under a general Nintendo Switch category.
- Check the displayed release date and note whether your country shows November 5, 2026 or a different local date.
- Look for a separately stated original-Switch version. Do not infer compatibility from a shared franchise page or from the game’s older Nintendo 64 history.
- Read the purchase section for the format, price and any requirement for a particular account, subscription or console update.
- Review Nintendo’s support notes for save transfers, upgrades or backward compatibility if you already own an earlier edition.
These checks are more reliable than retailer labels that use “Switch” as a family name without distinguishing the two generations.
What the announcement means for different readers
Original Switch owners
Your console is not an announced platform for this release. You can continue using it for games that support it, but you should not count on Ocarina of Time being available there unless Nintendo later says so explicitly.
Switch 2 owners
Your console is the hardware Nintendo names for the November 5, 2026 release. You still need to wait for Nintendo’s separate information about price, format and technical specifications.

Players who have not chosen a console
The platform decision is straightforward for this particular title: Nintendo has announced it for Switch 2 and calls it exclusive. Broader console decisions, such as price, game library and availability, require information beyond this single announcement.
Collectors and physical-media buyers
The announcement does not identify a physical edition. If a cartridge or boxed copy matters to you, wait for a product listing that explicitly names that format rather than assuming one will exist.
Bottom line on Nintendo Switch availability
The next Zelda game Nintendo has announced that is relevant here is The Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time, scheduled for November 5, 2026. Nintendo says it is exclusive to Nintendo Switch 2. Therefore, it is not currently announced for the original Nintendo Switch, and owners of that console should not assume compatibility, an upgrade or a separate edition without a later Nintendo statement.
