Sometimes—but only when repeated reads hit the cache. SSD cache can serve frequently requested data from lower-latency SSDs; a cache miss still has to be read from the underlying storage. It is not a universal array upgrade, and whether it helps depends on the workload and the specific array’s implementation.

What SSD cache can—and cannot—speed up

An SSD cache keeps copies of frequently accessed data on SSDs so eligible requests can be served without going to the original storage. Lenovo describes its cache as a secondary cache paired with controller DRAM: a hit can be served from the cache, while a miss requires a read from the original storage. The miss does not become faster merely because a cache exists. Lenovo ThinkSystem System Manager 11.60.2 documentation

The scope of the feature is product-specific. Lenovo states that “SSD Cache is used exclusively for host reads” in ThinkSystem System Manager 11.60.2. Dell’s PowerVault MD Series documentation likewise describes its SSD cache as improving read-only performance. These examples should not be taken as a definition of every vendor’s caching design. • Likely fit: repeated reads of a relatively stable, frequently accessed set of data, provided those requests hit the cache.
  • Not a direct fix: a write bottleneck on a read-only cache implementation, or a problem elsewhere in the storage path.
  • Uncertain benefit: workloads dominated by cold or changing data, or requests that frequently miss the cache. This follows from the documented hit/miss behavior; it is not a performance measurement for a particular array.

“The biggest problem” depends on your array

There is no single biggest storage-array problem established for all systems. Without the array model, workload, and telemetry, the title’s bottleneck cannot be named in advance. A read cache only addresses a relevant part of the path when the limiting requests are eligible reads and the needed data is actually cached.

Before buying drives, identify what is constrained and observe cache behavior under representative demand. Compare the suspected bottleneck with the array’s supported I/O direction and cache policy, whether the workload repeatedly accesses a hot data set, and the hit/miss pattern. Then verify drive compatibility and operational constraints for the exact array and software release.

Check the exact platform’s limits

Cache features with similar names can have different requirements and restrictions. For example, Lenovo’s ThinkSystem System Manager 11.60.2 documentation says the array must contain SSDs to create an SSD Cache and lists these limits:

  • Upgrade your laptop or desktop computer and feel the difference with super-fast OS boot times and application loads
  • Exceptional performance offering up to 550MB/s seq. Read and 500MB/s seq. Write speeds
  • Superior performance as compared to traditional hard drives (HDD)
  • Ultra-low power consumption
  • Backwards compatible with SATA II 3GB/sec
  • Only one SSD Cache is supported per array.
  • Usable cache capacity depends on controller primary-cache capacity.
  • Snapshots are unsupported.
  • Cached data is not imported or exported with volumes.
  • Volumes assigned to the controller cache are ineligible for automatic load-balance transfer.

Dell’s cited PowerVault MD guidance also lists family-specific constraints, including cache capacity tied to controller cache and one SSD cache per array. These are examples for the documented product families, not universal rules. Check the applicable vendor documentation and compatibility information for your model before selecting SSDs. How to decide whether cache is the right upgrade

  1. Identify the array and release. Use the vendor’s documentation for the precise model and software version; do not assume another product’s SSD-cache rules apply.
  2. Determine which I/O the cache serves. Confirm whether the feature supports reads, writes, or both, and which cache policy is available.
  3. Characterize the workload. Establish whether it repeatedly accesses a hot set and whether those accesses are eligible for caching.
  4. Measure hits and misses under representative demand. A cache’s possible value depends on requests being served from it; misses still reach the underlying storage.
  5. Check compatibility and operating constraints. Verify supported drives, capacity limits, and effects on snapshots, volume movement, security, or load balancing before purchase or deployment.

How to interpret published performance claims

Synology reports that its in-house tests for an all-HDD array with SSD cache achieved “more than 15 times” random read/write IOPS and “up to 93%” lower average latency. The cited feature page does not state the year or provide enough methodology in the available material to generalize those figures to other arrays, workloads, or deployments. Treat them as Synology’s vendor test claims, not as a forecast for your system. Synology SSD Cache feature page
