There is no confirmed answer yet: Squadron 42 has no verified Steam Deck compatibility result, and there are no game-specific Deck performance tests in the available sources. Cloud Imperium Games announced a Q2 2027 release window, but that is a plan rather than a guaranteed date. Until the game is available and assessed, don’t assume it will run well on Deck—or buy a Steam Deck specifically for it.
What is known about Squadron 42’s release?
In a February 4, 2026 support article, RSI said that “Squadron 42 is currently in development and is not available for download.” That article establishes the game’s status at the time it was updated; it does not say whether the game supports Steam Deck.
Cloud Imperium Games later announced a Q2 2027 release window in a statement dated August 27, 2026, reproduced by the Star Citizen Wiki. The statement said a specific release date would follow. No game-specific Steam Deck Verified or Playable status is established in the available sources. Valve’s Deck review considers controller support, legibility, performance, and system support. Valve’s general Proton guidance explains how Windows games may work on SteamOS, but it cannot determine whether Squadron 42 will launch, function correctly, or perform acceptably on Deck. Compatibility needs to be checked for this game specifically.
What do the reported PC requirements tell you?
An October 11, 2026 secondary report describes a Steam page for Squadron 42 and lists minimum PC requirements of Windows 11, 16 GB RAM, and a DirectX 11.1-compatible graphics card with 8 GB of VRAM. The Steam page was not independently accessible for verification, so treat those as reported requirements, not confirmed official specifications.

Even if accurate, PC minimum requirements do not show how the game behaves on SteamOS through Proton or what performance to expect from Deck hardware. They are not evidence that the game will either run or fail on the Deck. October 11 report on the Steam page and requirements
What should you check before trying to play?
- Compatibility status: Check the game’s Steam listing and your Deck library for its current Verified or Playable label. Read any listed limitations rather than relying on the label alone.
- Deck-specific performance: Look for tests on actual Steam Deck hardware once the game can be played. Useful details include stable frame rates, graphics settings, loading behavior, battery draw, and performance in demanding scenes. Desktop requirements cannot answer these questions.
- Controls and readability: Check whether built-in Deck controls work and whether menus and text are legible on the handheld screen. These are among the factors in Valve’s compatibility review.
- Operating system and launcher: Confirm whether SteamOS and Proton work with the game and whether an external launcher, account sign-in, or other software requirement affects play. The available sources do not establish Squadron 42’s specific support or launcher behavior.
- Current release details: Recheck RSI and the live Steam listing near release. The older RSI download-status article is not a compatibility statement, and dates and requirements can change.
Should you buy a Steam Deck for Squadron 42?
Not on the evidence available. There is no confirmed Deck compatibility rating or game-specific performance result to support a purchase for this game. If you already own a Deck, wait for a current compatibility label and hands-on testing before deciding whether its performance and controls suit you. If you are comparing ways to play, assess verified compatibility, sustained performance, controls and text readability, operating-system or launcher requirements, and the cost of using another PC.
